Rocktrospectiva: The Well-Received "Why Me?, Why Not" Turns 5

 

Released on 20 September 2019, "Why Me? Why Not" was the second solo studio album by English musician Liam Gallagher, a well-received album by critics and fans, debuted at No. 1 on the UK albums charts, the album spawned six singles "Shockwave" considered one of Gallagher's biggest solo hits, "The River", "Once", "One Of Us", ""Now That I've Found You", & "Gone". 

 

Liam had made a successful comeback following the break-up of his post-Oasis band Beady Eye with his debut solo album, As You Were back in 2017, The album entered the British charts at No. 1, outselling the entire top 10 combined and achieving gold certification in its first week, while also selling more copies than both Beady Eye albums combined, receiving a positive reaction from critics and audiences. 

 

So, Gallagher revealed that he had begun work on his second album in April 2018, confirming that he would again be working with producer Greg Kurstin as well as Andrew Wyatt, both of whom were involved with his first album. The Recording began in April 2018 in Los Angeles and continued sporadically through to 2 April 2019, some recording was done at Abbey Road Studios in London. The album features his 18-year-old son Gene playing bongos on the track "One of Us". Unlike his first album, all the tracks are co-written by Gallagher. The name of the album comes from teo drawings by John Lennon, the first titled "Why Me?", and the second titled "Why Not".

 

The first single was "Shockwave" followed by "The River", then "Once" this song gained acclaim from fans, and even Gallagher himseld praised the song as one the best he has ever been involved with, during the acoustic set for MTV Unplugged in Hull City Hall, Gallagher debuted new songs "one Of Us", "Now That I've Found You", "Gone" and "Why Me?, Why Not". 

 

So the album explodes into action with the strutting, tough, gritty glam of lead single "Shockwave" delivering an opening knockout punch, then we have the shimmering introspection of "One Of Us" grows from a heartfelt groove into a huge gospel flavoured outro, there is a sense that Liam's music offers hope for Oasis fans, as well as his voice sounds in magnificent shape here. The big Lennon-influenced ballad "Once" is a nostalgic tearjerker that provides a bona fide lighters-in-the-air singalong, while "Now That I’ve Found You" offers an enjoyable helping of joyous, carefree Britpop, and an irresistible chorus, coming across like a hybrid of ‘Help!’-era Beatles and The Stone Roses.

 

"Halo" is reminiscent of an amped-up Beady Eye, pumping up the pace with its rampant ‘Lady Madonna’ piano. Hugely invigorating, it recaptures the vibe of Oasis at their best. Then there’s the stunning epic title of a title track. The sort of thing fans like myself patiently waited years for his old band to produce. Its mammoth strings and soaring melody make for something genuinely anthemic. "Be Still" switches to sturdy driving rock, powered by a Roses-like vibe. Its brilliance seems effortless, sounding like the work of someone who is genuinely on a roll.

 

With "Alright Now" you can noticed certain George Harrison influence with the guitar solo, matching up wonderfully with powerful, reflective verses and lyrics that listeners will once again associate with the estranged relationship between music’s most famous siblings, with "Meadow" there is a floating psychedelic melancholia and mesmeric chords showcase a more subtle side to the record. Again it’s highly reminiscent of Harrison, with touches of ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’ period Floyd thrown into the mixture. In contrast, the thumping glam blues of "The River" finds Gallagher in defiant mood, spitting out unmistakable attitude, sounding every inch the tough, the mighty closer Gone sweeps into a glorious R.E.M-style waltz, delivering a striking finale. 

 

The album received positive reviews mainly, no doubt about it, no complains about the lyrics and the lack of originality, but for what it is and based on its own merits, this is top class indie rock n roll. And in many ways, it’s Liam personified as a triumph abd resurrection

Crack In The Union Jack: Oasis Reunited Live '25

It's been 15 years since the Gallagher Brothers played their last gig together, having split up after a backstage fight in Paris. But now those days are over, as an ending days, months and years of speculation, Oasis have announced they will be reuniting for the first time since 2009 and will play reunion shows next year in a world tour.

Both Noel and Liam Gallagher shared the news of the Oasis Live 25 tour on their social media sites, together with the official Oasis accounts, saying: "This is it, this is happening, and then their first comment on the announcement, the band said: ”The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over. Come see. It will not be televised.”

The announcement comes after rumours that band would be headlining Glastonbury and playing a string of gigs next year, including ten dates at both London's Wembley Stadium and the Etihad Stadium in Manchester. The Gallagher brothers did little to quell speculation that an Oasis reunion was imminent. The former frontman, and songwriter-guitarist, both took to social media to fuel the fan frenzy regarding a potential Oasis tour in 2025.

A short clip in the same font and style of the band’s hallmark logo was shared on both of the brothers' social media accounts on Sunday night (25 August), as well as the official Oasis accounts. The clip shows a black sign reading "27.08.24", which flickers and changes to "8am".

News: Oasis Reunited At Last?

The music industry are ready for what would be the return of the biggest britpop band, Oasis, telling the Sunday Times Wembley Stadium is booked for 10 nights, smashing Taylor Swift's eight-gig record set earlier this month. The band were set to perform a series of gigs next year at London's Wembley Stadium and Manchester's Heaton Park, and a sort of speculation that a Glastonbury headline slot could be possible.

Liam and Noel Gallagher have ramped up speculation that an Oasis reunion could finally be on the cards as the brothers teased that a band announcement could be made on Tuesday. A short clip in the same font and style of the band’s famous logo appeared on the brothers' social media accounts on Sunday, as well as the official Oasis page. It shows the date "27.08.24" before flickering and then reading "8am".

Fans of the Manchester rock band have pleaded with the brothers to regroup since they broke up in 2009, after a backstage brawl at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris. The band formed in 1991, the group rose to fame with hits including Wonderwall, Don't Look Back In Anger and Stop Crying Your Heart Out.

Liam Gallagher spent much of Sunday responding to rumours on X: "I never did like that word FORMER", he said, before sharing news articles about the reunion rumours. At his headline Reading Festival set on Sunday evening, he dedicated the Oasis track Half The World Away to his brother, saying: "I wanna dedicate this song to Noel Gallagher." He later dedicated Cigarettes & Alcohol to people who he said hate the band.

At the end of the gig, the same teaser clip showing Tuesday's date appeared on the stage's main screens. It has been 30 years since chart-topping Definitely Maybe album by Oasis turned the Gallagher brothers into stars in 1994 helping to kick off the Britpop era and launching the band, into mega-stardom. In 1996, an incredible 2.5 million people applied for tickets to their two dates at Knebworth – which could hint at the demand any new gigs might see.

The brothers always had a combative relationship, and a string of tours have fallen apart over the years, ending in the backstage fight in 2009 that resulted in Noel leaving the band. Helen Brown, a music critic at The Independent, told BBC News: "After the decades of going at each other with cricket bats and fire extinguishers, it's extraordinary that the Gallagher brothers seem to be getting along better and maybe money is an incentive here."

Both brothers have since gone on to have successful careers separately, with Noel fronting the group Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. Of the other original band members, Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs has recently toured with Liam, but drummer Tony McCarroll and bassist Paul McGuigan have not played with either Gallagher since Definitely Maybe and 1997's Be Here Now respectively.

El Aniversario: La Batalla Del Brit Pop Cumple 25 Años

Sucedio hoy hace 25 años, precisamente un 14 de Agosto de 1995, cuando comenzó la famosa batalla del Britpop entre dos de los pesos pesados del género: Oasis y Blur. Dos de las mejores bandas que el género pudo dar y que por aquel entonces vívian el mejor de sus momentos en las Islas Británicas.

Recordemos que el Britpop era el género que se había logrado establecer con mucho éxito en el Reino Unido siendo la respuesta en contra del Grunge Estadounidense que dominaba el medio rockero, aunque ya para ese entonces comenza su declive, en parte por la muerte de Cobain un año antes.

Sobre los protagonistas, en una esquina estaba Blur, que venía retumbando desde 1989, y en la otra esquina Oasis, que logró llamar la atención en 1994 gracias al éxito de su disco debut, por lo que los medios decidieron avivar esta rivalidad la cual llegá a su punto máximo ese 14 de Agosto de 1995, fecha clave debido a que ese día se tenía planeado lanzar el single "Country House", entonces se dijo que Oasis deliberadamente escogío la misma fecha para lanzar "Roll With It", y así el choque estaba garantizado, entonces la NME decidío publicar en su portada los rostros de Albarn y Gallagher con el título de "La Lucha Por El Campeonato De Pesos Pesados Del Pop Británico". 

 

Los resultados vinieron a favorecer a Blur, aunque se dice que un código de barras defectuoso privó a Oasis de no lograr más ventas, pero en el Top 40 se volvieron a enfrentar, los burgueses Londinenses contra la clase trabajadora de Manchester, volvío Blur a dar la campanada por lo que se vinieron una serie de ataques entre ambas bandas, siendo lo más recordado lo que dijó Gallagher en contra de Coxon y Albarn deseandoles que se contagiaran de Sida y se mataran en un accidente de transito, pero después se disculparía.  

Al final de cuentas, podríamos decir que fue Oasis el que terminó ganando la batalla, ya que en los meses por venir, saldría a la venta el famoso "What's The Story (Morning Glory)?" álbum con el que Oasis logró llevar al mercado Estadounidense, superando con creces lo que otras bandas como Suede, Gene y por supuesto Blur no pudieron conseguir. Hoy se cumple 25 años de ese momento tan recordado que hizo de los 90's algo único, y que le daría su fama al brit pop, en 1996 llegarían a la cumbre ambas bandas, por un lado Blur dominaría los Brit, pero Oasis establecería su nombre en los Estados Unidos, apareciendo en los VMA de 1996 algo que Blur no logró, y que hoy en día recordamos con mucha nostalgía más en este momento en que Oasis ya no existe y que ambos hermanos tienen sus propios proyectos y por supuesto Blur que medio se ha reformado para sacar algo pero desde luego ya no con la misma actitud de hace 25 años.

Liam Gallagher estrena el video del single "Once" tema que ya venía sonando pero que ahora estrena el video para el cual contó con la aparición de Eric Cantona, el legendario delantero Francés del Manchester United, sobre el cual, Liam afirmó que se sentía muy bien de tener al que consideraba al último gran futbolista rock and roll ya que canciones como "Once" y futbolistas como "Cantona" rara vez aparecen en escena, en el video el Francés sale vestido de rey deambulando por una mansión mientras que Liam la hace de mayordomo.

La nostalgia como protagonista principal del nuevo video para el single de Liam Gallagher "One Of Us", cuyo concepto en blanco y negro fue realizado por Stephen Knight junto a la dirección de Anthony Byrne, en el video, Gallagher aparece caminando por la campiña Inglesa y se topa con una serie de imágenes de su niñez y luego aparece sobre una sillas y se ve así mismo como su contraparte adolescente y luego su contraparte de niño y finalmente todo termina en una bodega, sin faltar la vibra nostalgica y la llamada de "Definitely Maybe" hace 25 años.

Nuevo single y clip oficial de Liam Gallagher, se trata de “The River”, un tema que Gallagher co-escribió con Andrw Wyatt y con quién ya venía colaborando desde que aparecío "As You Were" del 2017 y que se extrae de su nueva producción "Why Me?, Why Not?" que saldrá a la venta el próximo 20 de septiembre, el video es una oda a los alrededores de Manchester donde el protagonista es un chavo que anda paseandose hasta terminar en frente a un afiche en donde se promociona el disco, además el toque vintage de super 8 le da un plus al video.

Liam Gallagher estrena el video de su nuevo single "Paper Crown" que se desprende de la producción "As You Were" en cuyo clip aparece la actriz Sienna Guillory personficiando a una mujer que pasar por una serie de sube y baja emocional en un oscuro salón con paredes y cortinas rojas, según la revista Rolling Stone Liam dedicó el inicio a su hermano Noel aunque sin aclarar la relación entre las letras y la dedicatoria.
