Rocktrospectiva: The Wonderful And Abrassive Beauty "Coming Up" Turns 30

Released on 2 September 1996 "Coming Up" was the third album by English alternative rock band Suede. It was the band's first album since the departure of guitarist Bernard Butler, who was replaced by Richard Oakes. Also added to the band was keyboardist (and Simon Gilbert's cousin) Neil Codling. The album was a commercial and critical success, Coming Up was the second by the band to reach no. 1 on the UK Albums Chart, producing five top ten singles "Trash", "Beautiful Ones", "Filmstar", "Lazy" & "Saturday Night" the album received a favourable reception at home and in the US. Coming Up was the album that introduced Suede to a worldwide audience, in places such as Europe, Canada and Asia.

After the departure of guitarist Bernard Butler and the lack of commercial success with Dog Man Star and its singles, Suede were being somewhat dismissed by the British music press with Oasis, Blur and Pulp taking the limelight. Determined to bring Suede back into the mainstream, frontman Brett Anderson decided that the sound of the new album would be the complete opposite of Dog Man Star. "I think the next album will be quite simple, actually. I'd really like to write a straightforward pop album. Just ten hits." The guitarist to replace Butler was the 17-year-old Richard Oakes, who beat 500 other applicants for the role. Instead of applying for the job like everyone else, Oakes was auditioned on the strength of an impromptu demo tape he sent to the Suede fan club. Despite Oakes' smooth integration into his new role and the band's rejuvenated spirit, Anderson was tired of touring and was keen to get back in the studio with his new songwriting partner. He recalled: "it was becoming really not much fun touring an album that wasn't made by the band." At the time Suede were fatigued with being on tour, which was reflected in the B-side, "Have You Ever Been This Low".

After some hesitation over who was going to produce the album, the band decided to continue with long-time producer Ed Buller due to their strong working relationship over the years. Other candidates the band considered were Flood and Brian Eno, however they could not fit the band into their schedules. Buller had in fact welcomed a parting of the ways due to the fractious relationship between the band members during the recording of the last album. However, in friendly discussions with Anderson, Buller found that his ideas about a possible new Suede direction tallied almost exactly with the band's own: to write less complex, more immediate songs; to use heavier drum sounds, play fewer guitar solos and only employ string sections on a couple of songs such as "She" and "The Chemistry Between Us."

The album was recorded between December 1995 and June 1996 at various locations. To prepare for its recording, the band had immersed themselves in T. Rex's 1972 album The Slider and its successor, Tanx; as Buller stated that his aspiration was to make "The Slider for the Nineties." T. Rex became the blueprint of the recording process, as the band spent a month at The Town House just working on drums.

Buller explained how the recording process worked: "Basically, what we did, is that every track started with acoustic guitar, bongos, tambourine and Brett [Anderson], so it all started life pretty much the same way that Marc Bolan recorded all of his stuff originally." Bass player Mat Osman recalls how Buller was keen on making the album simple. "He was really keen on using all those devices: the big repeated end, the handclaps, the straightforward chorus, make it big and obvious." In an interview on the eve of the album's release, Anderson stated: "I wanted it to be a complete turnover from the last album, which was very dark and dank ... I wanted it to be communicative and understandable." Two songs which made it onto Coming Up had already been written in the early days of Suede. "Lazy" and "By the Sea" were two of Anderson's own compositions. "By the Sea" was actually written when Suede were recording their first album, which is why the song's opening line is similar to "So Young". Unlike the tense and chaotic recording of Dog Man Star, which according to Anderson was mostly written "by post", in a shift-like format, the new material was far more celebratory in both its development and execution.

As opposed to the previous album which followed a stringent pattern of Butler composing music for Anderson's lyrics, Coming Up was a more collaborative project. Anderson stated: "Coming Up was more of a meritocracy – if something was good enough, it didn't matter what the source was." Songs such as "By the Sea" and "She" required the use of keyboards. Faced with the problem as to how to play them live, Suede recruited Simon Gilbert's cousin Neil Codling, who made his debut at a fan-club gig in January 1996. Buller has stated that the reason why the album has a much better sound than the previous albums is that he had minimal involvement in the mixing process, mixing only two songs.

Buller credits much of the album's success to Dave Bascombe, who mixed the majority of the songs. According to Buller, having an outside observer mix the record with "fresh ears" enhances the overall production quality. Bascombe's input on "Trash" was crucial, as it was his idea to speed up the vocals. One of Suede's popular B-sides "Young Men" was left off the album, as Buller felt it was "too dark" and not as "poppy [and] in your face" as other songs on the record.

The musical sound of Coming Up is more accessible than previous album Dog Man Star. Its singles were much more successful than those of their second LP, while the lyrical content concerns the band's disaffection at the mid-90s hedonistic, celebrity-obsessed culture; "Beautiful Ones" and "She" are caricatures of British yuppies, celebrities and heroin-chic models. "Beautiful Ones" was originally titled "Dead Leg" after Osman threatened to give Oakes a dead leg if he was unable to write a top ten single. According to Anderson, "The Chemistry Between Us" is about "the emptiness of it all", when it comes to taking drugs with strangers who have no common ground other than being high on drugs. The main refrain of the song is "Class A, Class B, is that the only chemistry between us

Reviews were generally positive and seemed to respect Suede's new poppy and direct sound and considered the new album as if Dog Man Star was Diamond Dogs, then this was Suede's Ziggy Stardust – extravagant, steeped in glam and unashamedly poppy, others called the album as a wondrous pop album, simultaneously immediate and full of scope, a lovely, charming mix of absolute beauty and the thrillingly awkward."

New Music: Emotionally Unavailable

Suede have announced an expanded reissue of last year's album ‘Antidepressants’, with the swaggering new song ’Emotionally Unavailable’. As well as ‘Emotionally Unavailable’, the new deluxe version of the album will include the new tracks ‘Medication’, ‘Dirty Looks’, ‘Sharpening Knives’ and ‘Overload’, as well as 11 demo recordings of the songs from the original album.  "Emotionally Unavailable" finds the band channelling their classic sound, with propulsive, glam rock energy and Brett Anderson’s impassioned, soaring vocals. “Whatever she says she wants, well it clearly isn’t true / But you love to catastrophise,” he sings, before launching into the huge chorus.

News/Albums: Suede To Release Antidepressants In Expanded Edition

Suede will next month issue an expanded edition of their 2025 album, Antidepressants. This 3CD set features the album on CD 1 and five bonus tracks on CD 2.

Rocktrospectiva: The Conceptual "Night Thoughts" Turns 10

Released on 22 January 2016, "Night Thoughts" was the 7th., studio album by English alternative rock band Suede, the album was by a feature film, directed by Roger Sargent. The album spawned three singles "Outsiders", "Like Kids", & "What I'm Trying To Tell You", and was considered by many critics to be the band's finest work since 1994's Dog Man Star.

Again produced by regular collaborator Ed Buller, Night Thoughts was not just an album, but also the soundtrack to a film of the same name directed by Roger Sergeant. And right from the opening strings of  "When You Are Young", it’s appeared that the band are very much shooting Suede through a cinematic filter. "I Can't Give Her What She Wants" had an almost baroque elegance to it, "Tightrope" continued some of the lyrical themes of Bloodsports with its positioning of love as a dark metaphor before culminating in disembodied voices, as does whilst the orchestrally integrated "The Fur & The Feathers" and was regarded the best closing song that the band have given us since ‘Still Life’.

In the album the was enough upbeat music on here to satiated the more pop-inclined fans. With its punchy basslines, "What I’m Trying To Tell You" appeared to be a very successful attempt at filtering Franz Ferdinand through the eyes of Brett Anderson, whilst "No Tomorrow" had the swagger and insistancy of Suede in their prime.

There were very few songs on this album that can be directly compared to their previous tracks. Unlike Bloodsports, where most songs seemed to be like a combination of two or more songs from their back catalogue, the only song that seemed overly indebted to their past is "Like Kids", a song that appeared to crib chord sequences and production from the singles from Coming Up and the outro from "We Are the Pigs". Even more intriguing was "Outsiders", one of the most urgent sounding songs that band had released since "Can't Get Enough".

Night Thoughts allowed the bank to add another string to their metaphorical bow - soundtrack-rock. The band have taken on an ambitious project, and have pulled it off with much aplomb. Even when at their lowest ebb, Suede have always made music that is worth taking notice of, but with Night Thoughts the band have given us their first essential album in 20 years.

The album  received positive reviews from music critics, praising the album by stating: "With that past behind them, Suede can still dwell on big issues of love and mortality, but now that the past is in perspective, it all means a little bit more and what lies ahead is a little more precious, and that wide view makes Night Thoughts all the more moving. The record found a middleground between the guitar pop of the Coming Up era and the moodier textures of Dog Man Star," and regarded it as a fine entry in their already strong discography.

Albums: Antidepressants

Released through BMG and under the production by Ed Bueller, "Antidepressants" is the 10th., studio album by Suede and 5th., since the band reformed again and one of the most anticipated and eager albums of the year, which has been described as a post-punk and gothic rock with themes such as mortality and modern disconnection, and it is intended to be the second in a trilogy of "black and white" albums, starting with Autofiction (2022).

Preceded by three singles "Disintegrate", "Trance State" & "Dancing With The Europeans" and so far so good, an interesting and intense records with no fillers. The band started the work in their new material after the released of "Autofiction", according to Anderson, next album would be more experimental a ballet soundtrack, but the project was shelved with two tracks "Between an Atom and a Star" and "Life Is Endless, Life Is a Moment" repurposed for Antidepressants.

The album explores themes such as paranoia, death, and disconnection in the modern age. While the overall result is dark, both in tone and in subject matter, the lyrics often employ a more optimistic perspective. For instance "Dancing with the Europeans" is a celebration of the connections that people do have in an otherwise disconnected world, "Broken Music for Broken People", seen as reminiscent of Suede's 1996 song "Trash", and it suggests that music offers the socially disenfranchised a means to connect. "Sweet Kid" is a song of reassurances toward Anderson's son, told from a frame of reference driven by an awareness of his own mortality.

The band again trusted Ed Bueller talents for this album, the band keeps their essence throught the record under a dark layer full of strong lines and agresivity, their black and white album and their most visceral recording so far, with certain touches of theatricality with no ornamentations and in some way it showed the opposite face and the most distante of their 2018 album  "The Blue Hour".

A collection of intense, rage and elegant tracks with a guitar led approach such as "Sweet Kid", "Criminal Ways", Disintegrate", Broken Music", and "Sound And The Summer" combined with the bangers "Disintegrate", "Antidepressants", and "Trance State" and even the optimistic "Dancing With The Europeans"; and of course there is a place for beautiful and elegant tunes such as "Somewhere Between An Atom And A Star" and "June Rain", the perfect ballads in their own and the very last one the gothic "Life Is Endless, Life Is A Moment" to close a nearly perfect album.

The album previously had the working title Broken Music for Broken People, which, like Antidepressants, is the name of a track. Anderson had also considered Suppression but decided against it, believing that it was too dark. The front cover alludes to a 1962 Vogue photograph taken by John Deakin of the artist Francis Bacon in which he posed shirtless between two slabs of meat; the photo of Bacon is in turn a reference to his painting Figure with Meat.

Definitely a truly intense album, a courageous one to reclaim the band's place with a truly powerful and inspired sound, a matured one and of course we cannot forget the lyrircs and impecable voice of Anderson well-accomplished here and a serious candidate for the album of the year.

New Music: Dancing With The Europeans

Suede are releasing their new album, Antidepressants, on September 5 via BMG. Now they have shared its third single, "Dancing With the Europeans." Chris Turner directed the song's video. Frontman Brett Anderson had this to say about the song in a press release: "There's a sense of optimism about this song. I remember specifically we were doing a gig in Spain during the time we were writing this album. I was going through a bad time and at a low, personally. But we played this brilliant gig. There was a great connection between me and the audience. I thought of the phrase, dancing with the Europeans. There's something about that word, Europeans, that I really like. The phrase summed up the experience of looking for connection in a disconnected world. This sense of, where do we find those bonds with our fellow human beings? That show in Spain broke down those barriers". Antidepressants is the Britpop band's 10th album and the band called Antidepressants, because this is broken music for broken people.

New Music: Trance State

Suede shares their new single "Trance State," taking from their anticipated next album ‘Antidepressants’ due 5th September via BMG, A tension-filled, angular number that initially recalls the dark allure of Joy Division, ‘"Trance State" follows "Disintegrate"  to be the second single shared from ‘Antidepressants’, and sees frontman Brett Anderson lyrically delve into notions of obsession and paranoia. Speaking about the track, he has observed: "When you fall apart, there's such an honesty and a truth to that. You're revealing your real self. You're presenting yourself to the world completely unvarnished. You're not able to present a facade to the world anymore. It’s just you."

Rocktrospectiva: The Darkest Masterpiece "Dog Man Star" Turns 30

Released on 10 October 1994 "Dog Man Star" was the second studio album of English alternative rock band, Suede, under Ed Bueller production, it was the last Suede album to feature guitarist Bernard Butler; growing tensions between him and singer Brett Anderson ended with Butler leaving the band before recording was complete. As a result, some tracks on the album had to be finished with the assistance of session musicians.

The new album exhibits a more varied aesthetic and draws from a wider range of influences. Although it did not sell on the same scale as its predecessor, is regarded as one of the most pretentious albums ever released by a major label and featured the band trying to move away from the "Britpop pack".

Considered as a masterpiece by many, the album did not sell well back then due its obscured topic, it was generally overlooked at the time, in the United States the critics were polarised, curiously, the record gained a strong cult followers that considered a classic rock record.

Back in early 1994, the band was about to released the single "Stay Together", ironically, the band was at their lowest moment, Butler's father had died as the band were about to begin their second American tour. The first week of the tour was cancelled, and Suede flew back to London from New York. When the tour did resume, Butler—not only recently bereaved but now engaged to his fiancée Elisa—distanced himself from the rest of the band far more than before. According to drummer Simon Gilbert, Butler was becoming intolerable and impossible to work with, and the band could not function together any longer.

To record Suede's next album Anderson moved to Highgate, north London, and began to write lyrics while living in a secluded flat, the most pompous British album of the decade, Anderson has said that its overblown sound was down to his use of psychedelic drugs: I was doing an awful lot of acid at the time, and I think it was this that gave us the confidence to push boundaries. After the success of their debut album, Suede were hailed as the inventors of Britpop, something they were proud of for a short while. However, Britpop started to be dominated by the other bands, notably Blur, Oasis and Pulp. This disgusted Anderson, and fearing he was about to becoming a celebrity, Anderson deliberately distanced himself from the scene, as soon as the band became aware of it, they went away and wrote Dog Man Star. the less Britpop record ever, the topic is about torture, epic, extremely sexual and personal. None of those things apply to Britpop.

The album was recorded between 22 March and 26 July 1994 at Master Rock Studios,  the rehearsals were very tense and would inevitably split the band into two separate camps. Butler had his own agenda, and he frequently clashed with the rest of the band and producer Ed Buller, over whom he had concerns during the recording of the first album. According to Buller, Butler and the rest of the band were not in the studio together once during recording, perhaps only for a matter of hours.

Buller has stated that the recording process had some "happy accidents" during recording. Butler recorded separately from the rest of the band in a purpose-built lounge. There was a TV in the lounge and Butler can be heard tuning the TV at the beginning of "The Asphalt World". At the end of the song, Butler can be heard changing channels and picking up a section of dialogue from Lauren Bacall from the film Woman's World. Buller also talked of the impromptu recording of Butler playing the intro to "The Wild Ones" on a dobro outside as he sat on the roof of his car.

At the time, Butler had been writing additional complex arrangements, was interested in progressive rock, the extended "The Asphalt World" and the experimental ending for "The Wild Ones" were borne out of this affinity. Osman later expressed he felt Butler's compositions were too experimental: "Lots of the musical ideas were too much. They were being rude to the listener: it was expecting too much of people to listen to them.

Butler issued the band and their management an ultimatum: either they sacked Buller, or he would walk out. The rest of the band refused to comply with Butler's demands, and decided to let him walk out before the record was finished. Butler insisted he was kicked out of the band, for he turned up to the studio one day to find he was not allowed in. Buller and the remaining members succeeded in completing the record. Butler did finish some of his guitar parts; however, he refused to do it at Master Rock and instead used another studio where he could work on his own.

Butler became a harsh critic of the album's production and overall musicianship. He cites lack of commitment in the studio and the band's unwillingness to embrace his elaborate ideas as his main criticism: "I just heard too many times, 'No, you can't do that'. I was sick to death of it. I think it's a good record, but it could have been much better."

Dog Man Star,  looks back to the era when glam-rock met art rock, with meticulously arranged songs sung with a flamboyance reminiscent of David Bowie and accompanied by anything from a 40-piece orchestra to an old Moog synthesizer." The Bowie influence was still omnipresent, however, unlike their debut, Suede focused on a darker and more melodramatic sound, there is a perception among some that the album tells a story; that its structure consists of a beginning, middle and end. There is a proper introduction, a rousing orchestral finale, and arguably a coherent narrative of love, sex, drugs and loss." Anderson was highly influenced by cinema, and admitted that during his self-imposed exile living in Highgate he watched Performance every night.

Elements of Anderson's lyrics were influenced by his drug use, citing William Blake as a big influence on his writing style. He became fascinated with his use of visions and trance-like states as a means of creation, and claimed that much of the "fragmented imagery" on "Introducing the Band" was the result of letting his subconscious take over. The song was a mantra he wrote after visiting a Buddhist temple in Japan. Lewis Carroll was an influence on the lyrics, who Anderson was reading at the time. There was also an Orwellian tone, which permeated into the second song and lead single "We Are the Pigs",which depicts Anderson's visions of Armageddon and riots in the streets. Anderson's lyrical subjects became exclusively tragic figures, such as the addicted teenager in "Heroine", and James Dean in "Daddy's Speeding". Both songs, according to Anderson, introduce the themes of isolation where the obsession is forming relationships with fantasy figures, as opposed to real people. The recurring theme of self-loathing is reflected in the ballad "The Wild Ones", which tells of a dying relationship.

"Black or Blue" is a song about racial intolerance and tells the story of a doomed interracial romance, "This Hollywood Life" is one of the few rockers on the album. A standard rock song, it features a guitar riff throughout the verses and a guitar solo. Anderson states that the song is about the "seedier side of the music business," where people are forced to debase themselves somewhat to succeed. "New Generation" is an up-tempo song, considered the most upbeat song on the album and a moment of "sleek rock'n'roll.",  "The Asphalt World" is the longest song on the album and considered its centrepiece. It is a slow-tempo rock ballad partly influenced by Pink Floyd, with one of Butler's longest guitar solos. Its lyrics convey deviancy and sexual jealousy as Anderson revealed the song's lyrics could have been lifted entirely from his own diary

The piano ballad "The 2 of Us", according to Anderson, is about loneliness against the backdrop of wealth and fame; a professional couple incapable of relating to one another emotionally.  Echoing "Sleeping Pills" from Suede, "The 2 of Us" and "Still Life" are considered to be written from the viewpoint of a bored or lonely housewife.

The band recruited new guitarist Richard Oakes mid-September after hearing a tape of him playing "My Insatiable One" that he had sent to the band's fanclub.  And then Dog Man Star was released in the UK 10 October 1994. It entered the UK Albums Chart at no. 3. However, it slid to no. 12 the following week. The album was released in the US on Columbia two weeks later 25 October. The album and its singles did not receive the same level of promotion and radio play as the previous album in the US. This was due to the difficult climate surrounding the time of release. Such difficulties were the aforementioned departure of guitarist Bernard Butler; a name change to the London Suede, as a little-known singer from Maryland has had rights to the name Suede in America for fifteen years; and what Billboard magazine described as an "anti-Anglo sentiment" at American modern rock radio.

Critics praised the record called pompous and theatrical with a blend of pop hooks and theatrical gestures, but it US Suede never matched the moderate success of their first album. This was principally due to the mix-up over the band's name and because Dog Man Star "was one of the most pretentious albums ever released by a major label. The perception has changed throught the years, the critics would designate it as a masterpiece into the new century, and considered the album as an interesting record and quite odd and too rich for the mainstream at the time.

Rocktrospectiva: El Brillante Y Experimental "Head Music" Cumple 25 Años

Rocktrospectiva: El Formidable Recopilatorio "Singles" Cumple 20 Años
