New Music: Be With You Tonight

           

Teenage Fanclub have released "Be With You Tonight", the latest taster of their upcoming album, Do Not Dare To Dream, to be released on 9 October. "Be With You Tonight" the the track reflecting on the happiness that singer Norman Blake finds in moving to a new house in the Glasgow countryside."I'm in a good place in terms of happiness and wellbeing, and my songs on this album are really just a reflection of that," Blake says. "I've found that the easiest thing to write about is yourself. It can be quite cathartic. It's sort of like doing your own therapy." About the video, it has been photographed on location at Black Bay Studio on Great Bernera by Donald Milne.

Teenage Fanclub have shared their new single "There Was You,"  the latest preview of their forthcoming album, Do Not Dare To Dream. The album opener is a classic "I was lost but now am found" says the lyrics setting the tone for the record with its waltz rhythm, warm guitars, and instantly singable melody. The video has been shot by frequent Teenage Fanclub collaborator Donald Milne 

 

New Music: Day In The Sun

           

Teenage Fanclub have announced their new album, Do Not Dare To Dream, out 9th October, and shared its lead single, Day In The Sun, with a video by Donald Milne filmed at Black Bay Studio on Great Bernera in the Outer Hebrides. The album is the band's thirteenth and follows the melancholic warmth of 2023’s Nothing Lasts Forever, whose lingering understated vibe makes Day In The Sun all the brighter. Those lush multi-part harmonies, 60s jangle, rich acoustic textures, and organ are still there in abundance alongside some really nice flourishes — that really subtle vox wah in the back and that harp opening, all accentuate that Californian psych glow, presenting a playful sparkling optimism that leans towards The Byrds.

Rocktrospectiva: THe Dark Heavy "A Catholic Education" Turns 35

Released on 11 June 1990 "A Catholic Education" was the debut studio album by Scottish alternative rock band Teenage Fanclub, the album spawned two singles "Everything Flows" & "Everybody's Fool" that helped the album to received positive reviews from UK music journalists and critics. 

Teenage Fanclub had been formed in 1989 by ex-members of BMX Bandits. Their 1990 debut, A Catholic Education, is far less devoted to 60's jangle-driven songwriting, and instead features more Hard Rock-oriented power-chording and pentatonic leads akin to Deep Purple and Killing Joke. It's not that distorted nor that extreme, but is noticeably more youth-oriented than their following works, and the half-spoken vocal performance is more off-key as well. Still, the D tuning adds some melodic uniqueness on the songs, especially on tracks such as "Don't Need a Drum",  and the intense "Heavy Metal II", other highlights are "Everything Flows", "Don't Need a Drum".

The album's dark, heavy sound has been described as differing in tone and style from the band's later power pop work. The main influences on that first Teenage Fanclub album would've been Sonic Youth's Evol and Daydream Nation, those records. And we liked Exile on Main St. a lot. We liked Arthur Lee."  Buffalo Springfield, the Beatles, and Neil Young also proved influential.

After finishing his drum parts for the album, Macdonald left the band to be replaced by Brendan O'Hare. Macdonald: "I’d always said, "I’m happy to be on the record, but I’ll probably go back to university and finish my studies afterwards." Even though the band now had an album’s worth of material, they weren’t completely happy with it, so they decided to re-record four songs at Suite 16 in Rochdale with O'Hare on drums. 

Norman Blake said of the album title in 2016: "A Catholic Education was an irreverent thing, we thought it would get a reaction living in the west of Scotland and we knew people would say ‘what do they mean, what’s that all about,’ kind of thing. I wasn’t Catholic but I think we wanted to provoke a response. ... Certainly no one was angry with us for calling it that. We also meant it in the other meaning of Catholic being eclectic and bringing a lot of influences to the band. We just thought it sounded good as well."

At the time of release, A Catholic Education received mainly positive reviews from music critics praising the record as a gloriously sloppy and sludgy sound" was far removed from the "sparkling power pop" of their later albums. Instead, the album "prefigures the emergence of grunge, its viscous melodies and squalling guitars owing far more to Neil Young than Big Star." Ankeny concluded that despite the album's differences in attitude and approach. Straightforward guitar pop" was presented in a "flattering light", but that the album suffered from uneven songwriting. They felt that after "Everything Flows," "Critical Mass," "Eternal Light" and "Everybody's Fool", "slim pickings keep A Catholic Education from being a full course."

Rocktrospectiva: The Formidable "Grand Prix" Turns 30

 

Released on 29 May 1995 "Grand Prix" was the fifth studio album by Scottish indie band Teenage Fanclub. The band that was critically feted for 1991's Bandwagonesque LP famously chosen as Spin Magazine's album of the year, beating Nirvana’s Nevermind, the album spawned four singles "Mellow Doubt", "Sparky's Dream", "Neil Jung", & "About You".

The superb "Grand Prix" album is considered perhaps the truest group effort, their democratic approach truly bears fruit, and it's indicative of the disc's uniform excellence that the first Blake composition, the lovely "Mellow Doubt," doesn't even surface until track three, by which time McGinley's "About You" and Love's harmony-rich "Sparky's Dream" have already firmly established the set's ragged-but-right tenor. 

Unfortunately the new drummer Paul Quinn fails to recreate the buoyantly reckless abandon of the sacked Brendan O'Hare, otherwise the album captures complete creative synergy -- in particular, "Don't Look Back" is Love's watershed moment, a gorgeously wistful love song highlighted by wittily lovelorn lyrics like "I'd steal a car to drive you home," as good a pick-up line as anything in the annals of rock & roll. 

Althought there were certain fillers just like "Verisimilitude", this doesn't matter with Blake's contributions are still the highlights "Neil Jung" and "I'll Make It Clear" are simply perfect pop songs, but Grand Prix is ultimately the product of a band at the peak of its collective powers, not as much a landmark as Bandwagonesque but every bit as good on its own terms.

It remains their high watermark., especially because it was released at the height of Britpop, due for this, it was criminally overlooked for the likes of Echobelly and Menswear. Yet you’d struggle to find a more perfect pop album than this, 42 breathless minutes, it condenses the best bits of the Byrds, Big Star and early Beach Boys into thirteen, sun drenched tracks.

From the opening rush of About You and Sparky’s Dream through to the slower, reflective Verisimilitude and Going Places, Grand Prix is an album about being hopelessly, head-over-heels in love. 

Maybe musically the template is familiar, but lyrically it’s their most mature work to date with Gerard Love’s line in Don’t Look Back and it was a reminder that the Fannies were maybe too smart for the mainstream.

The album cover was a cool one, honoring rhe now-defunct Formula One racing team Simtek provided the car that appears on the front cover. Grand Prix received almost unanimous critical acclaim called it "winsome and reflective", "breathtakingly superb with finely honed dynamics, nagging harmonies and deceptively simple lyrics".

La banda Escocesa Teenage Fanclub aparece en la escena con este nuevo single "Foreign Land" que se extrae de su más reciente producción "Nothing Last Forever" a publicarse el 22 de Septiembre próximo, la banda sigue manteniendo su sonido un bonito rock melódico que tanto nos gusta y conmueve.

Rocktrospectiva: El Precioso "Bandwagonesque" Cumple 30 Años

Lanzado el 4 de Noviembre de 1991, "Bandwagonesque" fue el 3er., álbum de estudio de la banda Escocesa Teenage Fanclub, el disco clave de la banda que causó sensación en Europa y Norteamérica gracias a un sonido renovado de The Byrds más las técnicas del momento como distorsiones, sampleos y algo del sonido madchester, su hit más grande fue "Star Sign" que les ayudó abrirles la puerta en los Estados Unidos y luego vendrían los hermosos himnos alternativos "What You Do To Me" y "The Concept" que alcanzaron el top 20 en el Modern Rock Tracks de la Billboard, tan así fue el curioso éxito que este disco llegó a quitarle el No. 1 al "Nevermind", en la revista Spin, una de las más importantes en aquel momento. 

Hay que acreditarle a Don Fleming el estilo que obtuvieron en este magistral disco, venía de tocar en una banda llamada Gumball, cuyo estilo era una especie indie pop con mucho ruido, entonces el destino quiso que Teenage Fanclub se cruzara con él, y comenzaron a ensayar algunos temas y al productor le gusto como sonaban juntos y les sugirió hacer algo como pop ruidoso que era lo que estaba de moda, pero que no todos podían hacerlo, a la banda le parecía y comenzó la producción. 

Era importante para la banda recobrar la fama perdida con "The King", un disco de versiones instrumentales muy pobre y que contrastaba con la calidad de "A Catholic Education", entonces vino el magistral "Bandwagonesque" que busco sus raíces en la tradición rockera Británica con el estilo independiente que llevaba la pauta en aquel entonces, pero a la crítica tampoco le gustó y les tacharon de poco imaginativos y por ende se fueron con bandas como Suede que eran considerados como el futuro del rock Británico. 

El grupo se lleno de influencias como el romanticismo de The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Big Star y The Beatles, estaba hecho con sonidos vintage en la guitarra, y de todo esto emergió un disco power pop que hasta la fecha sigue siendo considerado su legado más grande así como el momento definitorio en su carrera, "Bandwagonesque" tiene composiciones clásicas de alto calibre, las guitarras y las distorsiones son excepcionales, el tandem de Raymond McGinley y Norman Blake produjo lo mejor en cuanto a trabajo ritmico, y Fleming impulso el uso de las armonías y coros que le darían el toque a las canciones.

 

El disco fue lanzado en el momento justo cuando la música estaba cambiando, pasando de los excesos ochenteros a una nueva década en donde el grunge, shoegaze y la música electrónica estaban tomando el primer plano, y ahí estaba Teenage Fanclub, sirviendo de eslabóm entre el sonido jangly y melódico Británico junto con pinceladas del grunge Estadounidense, un hermoso y agradable sonido que le encanto al propio Kurt Cobain y por ende a los seguidores de su banda, en Europa, luego de que el propio Cobain los invitó como banda de apoyo en esas regiones durante el "Nevermind" tour.  

 

En palabras del propio Blake, no había gente haciendo disco de indie pop melódico en aquel entonces, con toques de inocencia, lo cual había en "Bandwagonesque", en donde las vocales no eran del todo brillante pero arropadas con las guitarra se volvían poderosas y eso encanto a la juventud de ese entonces. El disco posee tanto grandes momentos empezando con la hermosa "Star Sign", o la melódica y poderosa "The Concept" así como "What You Do To Me" hoy en día clásicos del indie pop, pero también habían temas sentimentales como "Guiding Star" y "December", que rasgaban en los anales de New Order, la instrumental "Is This Music", la ruidosa "Satan", el pop perfecto en ""Sidewinder" y "Alcoholiday" todas dentro de este maravilloso disco que quedo como su obra cumbre, pese a otros discos que vinieron pero que a mi criterio, no llegaron a la altura de este increíble álbum cosecha del mágico 1991.

La legendaria banda Escocesa Teenage Fanclub esta de vuelta al ruedo con este nuevo single "I'm More Inclined" track que se desprende de lo que será su nuevo disco "Endless Arcade" el próximo 30 de abril, y para mostrarnos el trabajo, la banda ha realizado este montaje en donde captura como trabajaron en esta canción durante algunos días en el Clouds Hill Recordings en Hamburgo.

La veterana banda noventera Escocesa acaba de alegrarnos el día con este nuevo track "Everything Is Falling Apart" donde se les ve muy comodos y con una actitud mucho más madura interpretando esta mid tempo balada indie pop como buen reflejo de los tiempos que han pasado desde aquellos discos a principios de los noventas sin pretensiones de nada ni subiendo al tren de las modas simplemente entregando su arte como debe ser.

Rocktrospectiva: Bandwagonesque La Obra Cumbre De Teenage Fanclub Cumple 25 Años

Teenage Fanclub una de las bandas escocesas sin duda más peculiares del indie, comenzaron sus andanzas con el lanzamiento de "A Catholic Education" un año antes, del cual surgío el majestuoso single "Everything Flows" lo que les valío que fueran fichados por el sello Creation, desgraciadamente lanzaron para estrenarse con ellos el pobre "The King" que casi los mata, ya que la prensa musical que los apoyaba se les volteo y comenzó a increparlos.

En ese momento ideal es cuando aparece "Bandwagonesque" para rescatarlos de la jaula de los leones, siendo el primer single el maravilloso "The Concept" el cual según Brendan O'Hare el concepto es que n había concepto, el disco llegó a ser considerado un hito dentro de la música independiente británica que apelaba al pasado, un pasado más rockero.

Pero no solo "The Concept" destacaba en el disco, también estaban "Starsing" y "What You Do To Me" considerados como tres clásicos del indie noventero, a su vez otras tres canciones sentimentales como "December", "Guding Star" y "Is This Music?" apelando a un sonido y una imaginera más del tipo New Order, el disco tenía poderosas armonías y en otros momentos llegaba a ser la mezcla perfecta entre el pop amigable de The Archies con la bulla divina de Sonic Youth.

Sin embargo la prensa de la época no les toleraba que buscaran influencias viejas a la banda, tan así que les llegó a parecer una abominación por decirlo así, y es que lo que paso factura negativa al disco, fue que aparecío en una época en la que todavia la música de baile, el shoegazing, y el sonido decadente de Manchester estaban en boga, por lo que para muchos el sonido que Teenage Fanclub intentaba vender carecía de frescura e imaginación, pronto serían relegados por Suede y Oasis banda que fueron proclamadas como el futuro del rock británico.

Independientemente de los hechos, y de lo que la maldita critica haya dicho al respecto, Teenage Fanclub nos entrego su obra cumbre, la más completa de su carrera y que nos trae de recuerdo aquel 1991 que tantos buenos discos dio a la cultura pop, hecho que no se ha vuelto a repetir a la fecha.

La legendaria banda escocesa Teenage Fanclub estrena "I'm In Love" primer single que se extrae de su nuevo álbum "Here" demostrandonos que su encantandor sonido sigue más vigente que nunca y que para nada han perdido esa fuerza de siempre a pesar de entregar un nuevo disco cada 5 a 6 años, y más ahora que estan por cumplirse los 25 años del lanzamiento del brillante "Bandwangonesque"

Rocktrospectiva: El Encanto De Bandwangonesque 20 Años Después

Tuvo la peculiaridad de salir al mercado junto con "Loveless" un 4 de noviembre de 1991, bajo el mismo sello Creation solo que "Bandwangonesque" es totalmente opuesto al inamculado barullo sonoro de los Valentine.

La banda escocesa apeló a un concepto hundido dentro de las raices del rock en vez de apuntar sus cañones hacía un sonido mucho más alternativo sin embargo la apuesta después de todo fue la mejor para los Teenage Fanclub ya que Bandwangonesque sigue siendo su punto más alto trayendoles el éxito comercial a la banda debido a que tanto sus riffs guitarreros como las armonías tuvieron mucho más control y forma.

Desgracidamente la critica los tacho de poco creativos en una epoca en que imperaban el shoegazing, el dance y los últimos coletazos del madchester en Gran Bretaña mientras que en Estados Unidos la situación sería más dificil debido al imponente reinado del grunge, sin embargo la banda logro hacerse de un hueco en gran parte por sus excelentes y enganchables singles entre los que destacan "The Concept", "Starsing" y "What You Do To Me" clásicos absolutos dentro del indie, los cuales se mezclaban perfectamente con otros temas más sentimentales como "Guiding Star", logrando el coctél perfecto entre los Beach Boys y los fabulosos Sonic Youth.

Sin duda alguna es uno de los álbumes más esenciales dentro de la historia del indie destacando no solo por su concepto sonoro sino por la curiosa portada de la bolsa de dinero, desgraciadamente la banda no volvio a alcanzar tales dimensiones creativas a pesar que tampoco han entregado malos álbumes lo que sigue haciendo de Bandwangonesque su legado más importante.

La Noticia: Teenage Fanclub Anuncia Nuevo Álbum

Para el 31 de mayo se publicará “Shadows”, primer álbum de la celebre banda escocesa Teenage Fanclub en cinco años, de hecho ya se puede escuchar como adelante "Baby Lee" en su sitio oficial: www.teenagefanclub.com

A pesar de que llevan cinco años sin publicar nada nuevo, la banda se ha mantenido constante dando conciertos y giras por todos lados (menos Guatemala) en donde siempre tocan el mejor de sus álbumes, “Bandwagonesque”, de 1991, y otra promocionando sus grandes éxitos.

Finalmente editan nuevo material el cual ya hacía falta desde aquel medio-medio “Man-Made” en 2005, el álbum estara disponible a partir del 31 de mayo en Europa, Australia, y Japón y una semana después llegará a Estados Unidos bajo el sello Merge.

Según la web de la discográfica, “’Shadows’ está desbordado con la cantidad de clásicos encantadores y encaminados a la armonía que se podría esperar de un álbum de la banda. también han confirmado los primeros conciertos de su gira hasta comienzos de junio, de momento todos ellos en el Reino Unido.
