Rocktrospectiva: The Groundbreaking "Revolver" Turns 60

Released on 5 August 1966 "Revolver" was the 7th., studio album by the English rock band The Beatles, the album was accompanied by the double A-side single "Eleanor Rigby" and "Yellow Submarine". The album was the Beatles' final recording project before their retirement as live performers and marked the group's most overt use of studio technology to date, building on the advances of their late 1965 release Rubber Soul. It has since become regarded as one of the greatest and most innovative albums in the history of popular music, with recognition centred on its range of musical styles, diverse sounds and lyrical content. The release there coincided with the Beatles' final concert tour and the controversy surrounding John Lennon's remark that the band had become "more popular than Jesus". Critical reaction was highly favourable in the UK but less so in the US amid the press's unease at the band's outspokenness on contemporary issues.

Revolver marked a decisive turning point for The Beatles. Issued just eight months after Rubber Soul in the UK and most international markets, the album showcased a band rapidly abandoning the conventions of beat music in favour of experimentation, sophisticated songwriting and innovative recording techniques. It also became the group’s final studio project before retiring from touring, allowing them to focus entirely on what could be achieved inside Abbey Road’s recording studios.

The Beatles recorded Revolver after taking a three-month break at the start of 1966, and during a period when London was feted as the era's cultural capital. Regarded by some commentators as the start of the group's psychedelic period, the songs reflect their interest in the drug LSD, Eastern philosophy and the avant-garde while addressing themes such as death and transcendence of material concerns. With no plans to reproduce their new material in concert, the band made liberal use of automatic double tracking, varispeed, reversed tapes, close audio miking, and instruments outside of their standard live set-up. Among its tracks are "Tomorrow Never Knows", incorporating heavy Indian drone and a collage of tape loops; "Eleanor Rigby", a song about loneliness featuring a string octet as its only musical backing; and "Love You To", a foray into Hindustani classical music. The sessions also produced a non-album single, "Paperback Writer", backed with "Rain".

The albumb expanded the boundaries of pop music, revolutionised standard practices in studio recording, advanced principles espoused by the 1960s counterculture, and inspired the development of psychedelic rock, electronica, progressive rock and world music. The album cover, designed by Klaus Voormann, combined Aubrey Beardsley-inspired line drawing with photo collage and won the 1967 Grammy Award for Best Album Cover, Graphic Arts.

The British edition contained 14 songs, opening with George Harrison's tax protest song "Taxman" and concluding with John Lennon's groundbreaking "Tomorrow Never Knows". Capitol's American edition reduced the album to 11 tracks after removing Lennon's "I'm Only Sleeping", "And Your Bird Can Sing" and "Doctor Robert". Those songs had already appeared on Yesterday and Today, leaving the US version noticeably weighted towards Paul McCartney’s compositions and reducing Lennon’s presence across the album. The altered sequencing also changed the dramatic arc carefully constructed by producer George Martin and the band. In the UK version, Lennon’s increasingly experimental writing gradually develops throughout the album before reaching its climax with the tape loops, processed vocals and hypnotic rhythms of "Tomorrow Never Knows".

Lyrically, Revolver also represented a significant departure. Earlier Beatles albums had largely centred on romance, but Revolver explored loneliness, taxation, spirituality, altered consciousness, communication and mortality. Songs such as "Eleanor Rigby" and "For No One" presented emotionally complex narratives rarely heard in mainstream pop music at the time, while "Tomorrow Never Knows" drew inspiration from Eastern philosophy and psychedelic ideas. The album also reflected the individual growth of each songwriter. Lennon continued to push the boundaries of studio experimentation, McCartney expanded his melodic and orchestral ambitions, and Harrison emerged as a major creative force with three compositions that broadened the band’s musical vocabulary. Ringo Starr contributed one of the album’s best-known performances with the children's singalong "Yellow Submarine", which was released alongside "Eleanor Rigby" as a double A-side single on the same day as the album.

The record stands as the bridge between two eras of The Beatles. It expanded upon the songwriting maturity introduced on Rubber Soul while laying the technical and creative foundations for what followed. Many of the recording techniques, studio experimentation and conceptual thinking first explored on Revolver would be developed even further on 1967’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, an album often credited with redefining the possibilities of popular music. Even now, Revolver remains the moment when The Beatles fundamentally reinvented themselves and its influence continues to be heard across rock, psychedelic music, progressive music, electronic production and modern studio recording, confirming its place as one of the most important albums ever made.

Rocktrospectiva: The Beatles Compilation "Anthology 2" Turns 30

Released on 18 March 1996 "Anthology 2" was a compilation album by the Beatles, released by Apple Records as a part of The Beatles Anthology series. It featured rarities, outtakes and live performances from the 1965 sessions for Help! until the sessions immediately prior to their trip to India in February 1968. It was the second in a quartet of albums with Anthology 1, Anthology 3, and Anthology 4 and all of which tie in with the televised special The Beatles Anthology. The opening track "Real Love", was released as a single and like its predecessor, the album topped the Billboard 200 album chart.

"Real Love", as with "Free as a Bird", were based on a demo made by John Lennon and given to Paul McCartney by Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono. The three surviving Beatles (McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr) added guitars, bass, drums, percussion and backing vocals, but unlike with the previous song, did not re-work the lyrics or music. "Real Love" remained solely credited to Lennon, becoming the only Beatles song to have Lennon by himself in the writing credit.

The disc one contains three unreleased compositions, one being an instrumental entitled "12-Bar Original", recorded for Rubber Soul but subsequently unused. Two other songs recorded for Help!, "If You've Got Trouble" and "That Means a Lot", were abandoned and never returned to again by the band. The former was originally slated to be the usual vocal spot for Ringo Starr on Help!, and the latter was eventually given to singer P.J. Proby. The version of "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby" from the group's famed August 1965 show at Shea Stadium but left out of the documentary about the show appears for the first time. "I'm Down" was originally listed as Track 7 (in its correct place chronologically) but was shifted out of sequence to Track 3 at the last minute, at Paul McCartney's request. The album had already gone to press and McCartney reportedly paid the re-printing costs himself.

Disc two contains work-in-progress versions of tracks from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Magical Mystery Tour. The take of "Strawberry Fields Forever" that made up the first minute of the released record appears in its entirety on track three. Also included are three songs that were started during this period – "Only a Northern Song", "You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)" and "Across the Universe" – but would not see release until years later, in 1969 and 1970.

McCartney had hoped to include "Carnival of Light", an unreleased experimental piece that the Beatles recorded during the sessions for Sgt. Pepper in 1967; however, the idea was vetoed by Harrison, Starr and Ono on the grounds that the track was never intended for a Beatles release. Among the songs that were in the running for inclusion on the compilation but ultimately passed over were the following: the 1965 Shea Stadium performance of "She's a Woman"; a live version of "Nowhere Man", recorded in Tokyo in 1966; "Paperback Writer", featuring only vocals; and out-takes of "Think for Yourself" and "Love You To".

Like its predecessor, Anthology 2 sold well. In the United States, it debuted at number one, selling 442,000 copies its first week. The album spent two more weeks on the top 10, at number four then number eight, remaining on the Billboard 200 for 22 consecutive weeks and then re-entering the charts twice, marking a number 96 reach during the Christmas season of 1996. In the United Kingdom, the success was similar. The first Anthology album had debuted at number two when it was released in November 1995, but its successor reached number one, where it remained for one week.

Rocktrospectiva: The Compilation "Live At The BBC" Turns 30

Released on 30 November 1994, "Live At The BBC" was a compilation album featuring performances by The Beatles, that were originally broadcast on various BBC Light Programme radio shows from 1963 to 1965.

The mono album, available in multiple formats but most commonly as a two-CD set, consisted of 56 songs and 13 tracks of dialogue; 30 of the songs had never been issued previously by the Beatles. It was the first official release by the Beatles of previously unreleased performances since The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl in 1977 and the first containing previously unreleased songs since their final studio album, Let It Be, in 1970.

Most of the songs are cover versions of material from the late 1950s and early 1960s, reflecting the stage set they developed before Beatlemania. Before the album's release, comprehensive collections of the Beatles' BBC performances had become available on bootlegs, the compilation spawned a single "Baby It's You".

Talking about the compilation, The Beatles performed for 52 BBC Radio programmes, beginning with an appearance on the series Teenager's Turn—Here We Go, recorded on 7 March 1962, and ending with the special The Beatles Invite You to Take a Ticket to Ride, recorded on 26 May 1965. Then 47 of their BBC appearances occurred in 1963 and 1964, including 10 on Saturday Club and 15 on their own weekly series Pop Go the Beatles, which began in June 1963.

As the Beatles had not accumulated many original songs by this time, the majority of their BBC performances consisted of cover versions, drawing on the repertoire that they had developed for their early stage act. In total, 275 performances of 88 different songs were broadcast, of which 36 songs never appeared on their studio albums.

Several of the programmes aired live, but most were recorded days (or occasionally weeks) ahead of the broadcast date. The BBC's studio facilities were not as advanced as those at Abbey Road, offering only monaural recording (no multitracking) and basic overdubbing; few retakes of songs could be attempted owing to time limitations. It was not the BBC's practice to archive either the session tapes or the shows' master tapes, owing to storage space and contractual restrictions.

An official Beatles BBC album was being planned as early as 1982, and it was reported that "EMI was preparing an album" of the BBC material by late 1991. To supplement the archive he had partially rebuilt for The Beeb's Lost Beatles Tapes, BBC Radio producer Kevin Howlett sought out additional sources, such as tapes kept by people involved in the original sessions; others had contacted him after the series aired to inform him of their own home recordings of additional broadcasts. Remaining gaps were filled by recordings taken from available bootlegs.

The tracks for Live at the BBC were selected by longtime Beatles producer George Martin. Martin's selection criteria included both the quality of the sound and of the Beatles' performance. Of particular interest were the 36 songs that the Beatles never performed on their official releases, of which 30 were selected for the album. Three of the six omitted were from 1962 (none of the 1962 recordings were judged to be of commercial sound quality): Roy Orbison's "Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream)", the Coasters' arrangement of "Bésame Mucho" and Joe Brown's "A Picture of You", all with Pete Best on drums. Two others, from early 1963, also were omitted for substandard sound: the Gerry Goffin–Jack Keller adaptation of Stephen Foster's "Beautiful Dreamer" and Chuck Berry's "I'm Talking About You". The reason for the omission of the final song of the six, Carl Perkins' "Lend Me Your Comb" from July 1963, was not clear as it had very good sound quality, and it was speculated that it was held back for inclusion on a later release.

The selected songs included "I'll Be on My Way", the only Lennon–McCartney composition that the Beatles recorded for the BBC with no available studio version. The Buddy Holly-style ballad was their first composition to be "given away" without the Beatles attempting to record it for their own release. The song was given to Billy J. Kramer, another artist managed by Brian Epstein recording for Parlophone, who released it in the United Kingdom as the B-side of a cover version of "Do You Want to Know a Secret".

In all, 56 songs were chosen for the album, along with some banter among the group and the hosts. Abbey Road engineer Peter Mew used audio manipulation software to reduce noise, repair minor drop-outs and equalise to a more consistent sound from one track to the next. The resulting sound quality was considered generally better than the best equivalent bootlegged versions available at the time, although a small number of tracks were noted as exceptions.

Reviews considered the compilation as a collection that contained few buried treasures, but "as a time capsule, the set is invaluable, a worth hearing even though the album is a quaint memento in which The Beatles sound scruffy and fairly tame. The album received a Grammy nomination for Best Historical Album.

Placeres Sonoros: Now And Then

La Noticia: Paul McCartney Recupera La Voz De John Lennon Usando Inteligencia Artifical Para Nuevo Tema De "The Beatles"

In Memoriam: Fallece "Astrid Kirchherr" La Fotográfa Que Tomó Las Primeras Fotos De Los Beatles
