Iron Maiden will release a 10LP coloured vinyl box set in December as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations.

Roktrospectiva: The Remarkable Epic Masterpiece "Senjutsu" Turns 5

Released on 3 September 2021 "Senjutsu (Japanese: 戦術, "Tactics") was the seventeenth studio album by English heavy metal band Iron Maiden, it was a critical and commercial success, praised for its ambitious epic scope. Two singles, "The Writing on the Wall" and "Stratego", were released to promote the album.

 

Senjutsu was the band's first studio album in nearly six years (although having been put on hold for well over two years), following 2015's The Book of Souls, marking the longest gap between two Iron Maiden studio albums. This was also their second studio double album, and their first studio album since 1984's Powerslave to have no songwriting contributions from guitarist Dave Murray in any way, as well as the first since 1998's Virtual XI to feature multiple songs written by bassist Steve Harris alone. The name of the album is rendered on the right side of the cover art by the actual vertical Japanese spelling of  "senjutsu" (戦術), and on the left side by a font reminiscent of Japanese characters 

The album's first single "The Writing on the Wall" was released on July 15, 2021. Prior to the song's release Iron Maiden held a promo campaign which included multiple clues and hidden messages, hinting at the song and a possible new album. The song was accompanied with an animated video created by Blinkink. The second and final single "Stratego" was released on August 19, and also had a animated video created to coincide with its release.

In promotion of the album Iron Maiden partnered with British supermarket brand Asda to launch a pair of products celebrating the arrival of the album. Including a Senjutsu edition of Trooper’s Sun & Steel Japanese lager, and a t-shirt featuring the album cover.

In the comparison of sales of physical albums in the UK, the double-disc release took the first position, also noted on the European Album Chart Top 200. The album was ranked second on the world music charts. 17th studio effort also gave the band its highest chart position in the US debuting at number three on Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart and number one on Billboard's Physical Albums Chart. Senjutsu was also in the Top 3 bestsellers in the USA (the highest in the group's history so far), Australia, Ireland, Great Britain (first on the lists in Wales and Scotland), Singapore, Israel, UAE, Japan, the Netherlands, France, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Montenegro, Poland, Estonia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nepal, Honduras, Uruguay, Cyprus, Latvia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Luxembourg, Taiwan, Malta and Ukraine. 

In South America and Africa, the album went on sale only one week after the official release date. In total, the group's seventeenth album reached the top three bestsellers in 55 countries around the world and the Top 5 bestsellers in 63 countries. Senjutsu turned out to be a tremendous achievement, strengthening the group's brand on the global music market. It was eventually certified gold in their native U.K. in July 2023, and has since been certified gold and 9 other countries.

Senjutsu marked the second use of the band's original logotype (with the extended letters R, M and N) on a studio album cover since 1995's The X Factor, the previous one being for 2015's The Book of Souls. The album cover by Mark Wilkinson presents Eddie dressed up as a samurai and holding a katana. Harris sent Wilkinson reference material of Oni creatures and kabuki paintings and masks, and the artist spent a day seeing the Japanese exhibits on the Victoria and Albert Museum for further inspiration.

Rocktrospectiva: The Heavy And Brilliant "A Matter Of Life And Death" Turns 20

Originally Released on 25 August 2006 in Italy and Finland, and 28 August worldwide—excluding the US, Canada and Japan, where it was released on 5 September, "A Matter Of Life And Death" was the 14th., studio album by the English heavy metal band Iron Maiden. It was the first album in Iron Maiden's career to enter the US Billboard charts in the top 10, achieving significant chart success in many other countries as well.

Iron Maiden began writing new songs near the end of 2005, after a break following their hugely successful festival dates in the US and Europe during the Eddie Rips Up the World Tour. After taking time off over Christmas, the songs were completed and the band began recording at Sarm West Studios in London, with their regular producer, Kevin Shirley. The album was recorded from 1 March to 4 May 2006.

To provide a more "live" sound, the album was not mastered. Shirley said, "Spoke to 'Arry (Steve Harris) on Friday, who has decided against mastering the Iron Maiden album ... It means that you will get to hear the new album exactly as it sounded in the studio, no added EQ, compression, analogue widening, etc., and I must say, I am pretty happy with the end result. Lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson commented that "Everyone was up for pushing things as far as they'd go, but the record was so easy to make." Dickinson went on to claim that they "finished the record with two months to spare," with Harris adding, "A lot of what you hear are first time takes." Speaking about the record's musical style, Harris states that "It is heavier than we've ever been, but also very progressive. And I don't mean that in the modern sense, but like Dream Theater, more in a 70s way."

A Matter of Life and Death is Iron Maiden's fourth studio album that does not have a title track, following Piece of Mind, The X Factor and Virtual XI. Drummer Nicko McBrain and guitarist Janick Gers claim that the band originally intended to name the album after one of its tracks, with both "The Pilgrim" and "The Legacy" being considered. According to Gers, "sometimes a title will just leap out at you as the obvious choice, but it didn't this time for some reason", so the band decided on A Matter of Life and Death, which, according to McBrain, was amongst "two or three ideas which we were kicking around". Neither Gers nor McBrain can remember who came up with the title, which they state was thought up by either Harris, Rod Smallwood (the band's manager) or "Drew" (an engineer at Sarm West Studios).

The album cover was created by Tim Bradstreet, an American artist, best known for his work on the Hellblazer and Punisher comics. A lifelong Iron Maiden fan, who drew much influence from Derek Riggs' artwork for them, Bradstreet described the opportunity as "one of my wildest dreams". He had a tight schedule, receiving for reference the songs to listen to and key art done by Peacock Designs UK, who directed the booklet's artwork. Along with redrawing a few of the original elements – which featured the tank described by Bradstreet as "Korean War era but with a twist" as the gun barrel is patched over from another vehicle – Bradstreet added Eddie as a general leading an army of skeletons. Bradstreet's colourist partner Grant Goleash finished the art, which was then retouched by Peacock. The back cover would originally feature Eddie shot on the back, but then the band opted to instead feature a detail of the tank icon featuring Eddie's head along with crossed guns.

The first single to be released from the album was "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg", released on 14 August 2006.  On 10 August, "Different World" was made available for public streaming on the band's website,  as was "Brighter than a Thousand Suns" the following day. "Different World" was the second single, receiving airplay on many rock radio stations. The song also features an animated video, similar to that of "Wildest Dreams."

The album was met with highly positive reviews from music critics and rated 10, cause it contained everything fans want to hear; be it exciting, Maiden-style story telling; aggressive riffs; impressive solos; or melodic harmonies. BBC Music praised the band for "their uncanny ability to write great lyrics wrapped around guitar orchestration that rock fans crave", concluding: In this world of hopeless auto-tuned mediocrity here is a British band that consistently crafts fantastic music that surprises reviewers and fans alike.

Rocktrospectiva: The Impressive And Confident "The Book Of Souls" Turns 10

Released on 4 September 2015 "The Book Of Souls" was the 16th., studio album by English heavy metal band Iron Maiden. It was the band's first studio double album on CD (their first studio double LP being Fear of the Dark in 1992); it  was also their longest album to date, with a total length of 92 minutes and 11 seconds. 

Produced by long-time Iron Maiden collaborator Kevin Shirley. The band wrote and immediately recorded many tracks in the studio, resulting in a spontaneous live feel, it also contains the band's longest song to date, "Empire of the Clouds", at 18 minutes in length, which was also issued as a single for Record Store Day on 16 April 2016. While not a concept album, references to the soul and mortality are prominent, realised in the Maya-themed cover artwork, created by Mark Wilkinson.

The band's intention to record a sixteenth studio album was first revealed by vocalist Bruce Dickinson in September 2013, who expected a possible release in 2015. The album was recorded at Guillaume Tell Studios, Paris with producer Kevin Shirley from September to December 2014, with the finishing touches added in early 2015. We were delighted to discover the same magical vibe is still alive and very much kicking there!". The band originally intended to release the record earlier in 2015, but it was pushed back to 4 September while Dickinson received treatment for a cancerous tumour.

The album's title, artwork and track listing were revealed on 18 June 2015.  Released by Parlophone, this is the band's first original studio album not to be issued by EMI, after both companies were acquired by Warner Music Group in 2013.

According to bassist Steve Harris, the cover art ties in with the title track, as the depiction of the band's mascot, Eddie, is based on the Maya civilization, who "believe that souls live on [after death]". To check the accuracy of the artwork, the band hired Mayanist scholar Simon Martin, who also translated the song titles into hieroglyphs. According to Martin, although the civilisation had no Book of Souls, "the Mayans are very big on souls ... So as a title, it's appropriate to Mayan culture, but it's very much Iron Maiden's own thing." Although not a concept album, references to the soul appear throughout, as do ruminations on mortality in general, with Harris explaining "as you get older, you start thinking about your own mortality and these things more".

"Shadows of the Valley", "Death or Glory", "Speed of Light" and "If Eternity Should Fail" were the first songs written for the album, the last of which, according to Dickinson, was originally written for a potential solo album which he eventually reworked as The Mandrake Project, and features the band's first collective use of drop D tuning. Smith stated that "Speed of Light" and "Death or Glory" were two of a small minority of tracks completed prior to the recording sessions, and mark the first collaboration between Smith and Dickinson (without Harris) since both members rejoined Iron Maiden in 1999. With both tracks, Smith and Dickinson deliberately wrote shorter songs in an attempt to hark back to previous singles "2 Minutes to Midnight" (1984) and "Can I Play with Madness" (1988). According to Dickinson, "Death or Glory" is about First World War triplanes.

Unlike the band's previous two albums, 2006's A Matter of Life and Death and 2010's The Final Frontier, Harris does not receive a writing credit for all of the record's songs. This is because Harris suffered two bereavements during the writing stage ("an old schoolfriend and a member of the family") which affected his creative output. The result was a more collaborative effort, with all members except drummer Nicko McBrain receiving a writing credit. One of Harris' contributions, "Tears of a Clown", which he co-wrote with Smith, is praised by Dickinson as his favourite track from The Book of Souls and is based on comedian Robin Williams' depression and suicide in 2014.

The release's final song, "Empire of the Clouds", replaced "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" (from 1984's Powerslave) as the band's longest song at 18 minutes in duration. The track featured Dickinson on piano for the first time and is based on the 1930 R101 airship crash.  At 92 minutes in length, it was both the longest Iron Maiden studio album and their first double studio record. Dickinson comments "we all agreed that each track was such an integral part of the whole body of work that if it needed to be a double album, then double it's going to be!

The album received generally favorable reviews, it was album of extraordinary vision"; and deemed as "Iron Maiden's most comprehensive and confident work since Brave New World and for certain one of their finest achievements overall". The Book of Souls is marked by an impressive rawness that scratches against the album's more grandiloquent moments".

Rocktrospectiva: The Seminal "Iron Maiden" Turns 45

 

Released on 11 April 1980, "Iron Maiden" was the debut studio album by English heavy metal band Iron Maiden. The North American version included the song "Sanctuary", released in the UK as a non-album single. Although Iron Maiden have since criticised the quality of the album's production, the release was met with critical and commercial success, peaking at number four on the UK Albums Chart and helping the band achieve prominence in mainland Europe.The album spawned two singles "Running Free" & "Sanctuary".

 

It was the band's only album produced by Wil Malone, whom Iron Maiden have since claimed lacked interest in the project and effectively left them to produce most of the album themselves, which, according to bassist Steve Harris, was completed in just 13 days. Recording took place at Kingsway Studios, west London in January 1980, with the band taking time out from the 1980 Metal for Muthas Tour to complete the final mixes at Morgan Studios, northwest London in February. Before the sessions with Malone, the band made two attempts in December 1979 with two different producers while still a four-piece. Guy Edwards, the first, was dismissed as the band were unhappy with the "muddy" quality in his production, while Andy Scott was also dismissed after insisting Harris play his bass with a pick rather than his fingers. The band criticised the quality of the production, although many fans still preferred the raw quality of the sound recording. Certain medias stated that the style had certain elementos from punk rock, ironically, Harris stated that the band despised everything about punk rock.

 

This was also the only studio album with guitarist Dennis Stratton, who, having been brought in as a last-minute placement, was dismissed due to "musical differences" after the band's European tour in support of Kiss. Although Stratton stated that he was not "trying to push the band in a new direction", Harris commented that it "really pointed up the difference between Den and us", after which he began to notice that "Dennis was so much more into playing stuff like "Strange World" than he was "Iron Maiden" or "Prowler", because it was more slow, melodic ... when he was soloing on one of the heavier songs, it wasn't with quite the same passion".

 

About the tracks "Running Free" was released as a single on 8 February 1980, reaching No. 34 in the UK Singles Chart. Vocalist Paul Di'Anno, who wrote the song's lyrics, describes it as "a very autobiographical song, though of course I've never spent the night in an LA jail. It's about being 16 and, like it says, just running wild and running free. It comes from my days as a skinhead. "Sanctuary" was originally penned by guitarist Rob Angelo (Bob Sawyer), a member of Iron Maiden in 1977, who was paid £300 for the song's rights. The "Sanctuary" single was released on 7 June 1980 and charted at No. 29. Although "Strange World" is credited solely to Harris, Paul Mario Day, the band's original vocalist from 1975 to 1976, asserted that he also contributed to the song.

 

"Charlotte the Harlot", their only song to have been credited to Dave Murray alone, is the first of four Iron Maiden tracks about the fictional prostitute "Charlotte", although Murray states it was "based on a true story". The 7-minute "Phantom of the Opera" is one of Harris's favourites and is still performed live relatively frequently. With many mood and time-changes. "Transylvania" is an instrumental piece composed by Harris. Of all the album's songs, "Phantom of the Opera", "Running Free", "Sanctuary" and "Iron Maiden" are the most frequently played in the band's concert tours, with the last being played at every show since the band's inception and signalling the arrival of Eddie onstage.

 

The album received immediate critical acclaim. hailed it as Heavy metal for the '80s, its blinding speed and rampant ferocity making most plastic heavy rock tracks from the '60s and '70s sound sloth-like and funeral-dirgey by comparison, and keeps regularly described it as "one of the top debut albums in the world of heavy metal", containing "the raw, aggressive power that defines the early years of the band".

In Memoriam: Original Iron Maiden Singer "Paul Di'Anno" Dies At 66

Sad news for metal bangers, Paul Di'Anno, the original singer for heavy metal band Iron Maiden, has died at the age of 66. The band's current members paid tribute, saying they were "all deeply saddened" by his death. In a statement on social media, bass player Steve Harris said it was "just so sad he's gone", "At least he was still gigging until recently, it was something that kept him going, to be out there whenever he could. He will be missed by us all. Rest in peace mate."

The rest of the band's statement said: "Paul's contribution to Iron Maiden was immense and helped set us on the path we have been travelling as a band for almost five decades. "His pioneering presence as a frontman and vocalist, both on stage and on our first two albums, will be very fondly remembered not just by us, but by fans around the world."

Di'Anno's death was announced by record label Conquest Music, on behalf of his family. In a statement, they said Di'Anno had "passed away at his home in Salisbury". No cause of death was given.

Born as Paul Andrews, the musician featured on the band's first two albums, Iron Maiden and Killers, establishing them as a crucial part of the new wave of British heavy metal. He left the band in 1981 and was replaced by Bruce Dickinson. Di'Anno later admitted he had been partying "non-stop, 24 hours a day" and that was the real impact, his lifestyle wasn’t fair to the band, the fans or to myself.

Born in Chingford, east London, in 1958, Di'Anno sang with numerous bands as a teenager, while working as a butcher and a chef. In 1977, he befriended Harris, who was seeking a singer for his up-and-coming metal band Iron Maiden. Di'Anno auditioned and got the job. Their sound was an anomaly during the ascendancy of punk rock, and they struggled to get gigs outside London. To address the issue, they decided to make a demo tape to drum up business, that tape is now known as the Soundhouse Tapes, the three-track demo gained them a cult following, selling 5,000 copies by mail order.

By 1979, they had secured a record deal with EMI and started recording their self-titled debut. Although it was put together in a hurry, the record was hugely influential - with its combination of punk intensity and rock riffs setting the template for heavy metal in the 1980s. It entered the UK album chart at number four in April 1980, and the success of the single Running Free earned the band a coveted spot of music TV show Top of the Pops.

The follow-up album, 1981's Killers, had a harder sound again. But after a world tour, Di'Anno was either kicked out of the band or left of his own accord. Either way, he said success had led him to a dark place. "I was already a fairly excessive character, but there I really went for it," he told Rock Hard magazine in 2004.

With Dickinson taking over, Iron Maiden went on to become one of rock's most successful groups, with genre-defining hits like Run To The Hills and Can I Play With Madness. But Di'Anno never held a grudge against the band, or his replacement. Everyone thinks that we hated each other, which is completely wrong

He also denied rumours that he had been underpaid for his contribution to the first two Iron Maiden albums, which included co-writing credits on key tracks like Remember Tomorrow, Killers, Sanctuary and Running Free."To be honest with you, it's nobody's damn business but I got paid very well," he told Rock Hard in 2022. They looked after me. End of story.

After leaving Iron Maiden, Di’Anno's raw, aggressive vocals were cited as an influence by metal bands including Metallica, Pantera and Sepultura. He stayed in music, both a solo artist and as a member of bands like Gogmagog, Battlezone, Praying Mantis, and Killers.

In recent years, he had been performing in a wheelchair due to serious health issues including lymphedema, a condition that causes swelling of your body tissue. In 2022, fans helped him raise money to have major knee surgery in Croatia. Despite that, he kept up a robust touring schedule, playing more than 100 shows in 2023 and 2024.

A career retrospective album, The Book of the Beast, was released last month, including highlights from his solo career and two "reworked" versions of Iron Maiden songs Tomorrow and Wrathchild, and a  documentary about his life is scheduled for release at the end of the year.

Rocktrospectiva: The Intense "Powerslave" Turns 40

 

Released on 3 September 1984, "Powerslave" was the fifth studio album by the English heavy metal band Iron Maiden, the album spawned two singles "2 Minutes To Midnight" & "Aces High", this album led to a massive supporting tour "The World Slavery Tour" which is widely regarded as being the band's longest and most arduous tour to date, and led to the live album Live After Death. 

 

The album is notable cause it was the first to feature the same personnel as their previous studio album, and this lineup would remain the same for another two released, also it was the last album to feature an instrumental piece. The release contains a musical re-telling of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, the lyrics of which include some lines from the poem. At 13 minutes and 45 seconds in length, this was Iron Maiden's longest song for over 30 years until it was surpassed by the 18-minute "Empire of the Clouds" from the 2015 album The Book of Souls. 

 

According to Steve Harris, they recording sessions began under time pressure, the band took a period of three weeks in January 1984 to regroup and then another six weeks to rehearsed in Jersey, then moved to Compass Point Studio in Nassau to recording. 

 

This album is probably best known for the grandeur tour that ensued it and gave their prolific live album ever made, Live After Death, under the production carried out by Martin Birch, with immaculate direction, especially considering the year this album was made. A fairly clean and polished sound in which all the members stand out within the same sound space, with the band's sound becomes more technical and at some point more intricate. 

 

The album started with "Aces High" regarded as one of their best opener tracks, its fast, furious, amazing vocals, ripping solos, shredding bassline and exceptional drumming make this piece an instant heavy metal classic. Bruce hitting huge notes while singing the song title is something that happens, not only here but during a good part of the album. Adrian with some very cool lead work, makes his guitar sound like an air-raid siren, "2 Minutes To Midnight" has a kind of stereotypical 80s intro riff, Adrian still draws cool riffs that make this piece a catchy tune that just fits the lyrics about nuclear war and government corruption. The use of riffage, mounting basslines, and catchy vocal lines is a constant in this classic masterpiece, the solo section is sublime and doesn't let anything escape to leave you with a feeling of emptiness; actually, the guitars not only fulfill that role but Steve's juicy bass line complement each other in the execution very well, perhaps more accomplished in this one, but without detracting from the synchronicity in the other songs.

It was Maiden's fifth studio album to reach No. 1 in the UK and No. 12 in the United States, considered one of the most greatest metal album of all time, this was the album that marked a before and after in the band's career.

Un disco que fue anunciado a finales del 2002 y confirmado vía el website de la banda a inicios del 2003, y que sería completado en Febrero de ese año, y a partir del 31 de Mayo anunciarían el título del mismo "Dance Of Death", sería el único disco de la banda en donde cada miembro tuvo un crédito en las canciones, "New Frontier" era un tema que expresaba el punto de vista de McBrain sobre la clonación humana y que eso debería de ser algo solo de Dios, porque si el hombre lo hace era un intento de crear un monstruo en tubo de experimentación, "Montségur" era sobre la caída del fuerte de Cathar durante la Cruzada de 1244, en donde Dickinson notaba el paralelismo de esos hechos con la historia actual, "Paschendale" era sobre la batalla del mismo nombre durante la Primera Guerra Mundial y que fue escrita por Adrian Smith orientado en la línea épica de la banda ya que tenía elementos de rock progresivo tanto en su sonido como estructura.

 

Con el tema "Face The Sand" se basaron en la guerra en Irak que tuvo lugar durante las grabaciones del disco, y que se enfocaron en los paisajes desérticos y de como todos los poderosos ejércitos que intentaban dominar las arenas terminaban cayendo, "Journeyman" era el primer tema acústico  del disco en la historia de la banda y era un historia sobre el "carpe diem", la poderosa "Rainmaker" que fue inspirada por el sonido que tenía el riff de la intro que hacía pensar a Dickinson en gotas de lluvia, y el otro single del disco "Wildest Dream" que tenía un video animado.

 

Otro dato extraño del disco fue la portada que hoy en día considerada una de las peores que ha hecho la banda, era la creación de David Patchett quien al final pidió que fuera removido su nombre de la misma cuando la banda decidió usar una versión sin terminar.

 

A pesar de la horrenda portada, lo que interesaba era el contenido del disco y así fue otra cosa, ya que muchos críticos alabaron el álbum describiéndolo como un material increíble lleno de grandes canciones, lo que probaba que la banda todavía tenía mucho que ofrecer, destacando varios tracks como "Paschendale" a la que muchos consideraban con enorme poder para llegar a ser un single del disco, hasta la fecha es considerada un obra de arte en la discografía del grupo, por lo tanto, se podía destacar el disco como un triunfante retorno a la forma para una banda que poco tenía que demostrar ya.

Rocktrospectiva: El Exitoso Y Poderoso "Piece Of Mind" Cumple 40 Años

Lanzado el 16 de Mayo de 1983 "Piece Of Mind" fue el 4to., álbum de estudio de la banda Inglesa, Iron Maiden, fue el disco donde debuto Nicko McBrain quien sigue siendo el baterista de la banda hasta la fecha,  el disco fue un éxito de crítica y comercial llegando al No. 3 en el Reino Unido No. 14 en el Billboard 200, lanzó dos intensos e impecables singles, "The Trooper" y "Flight Of Icarus" que ayudaron a que la banda siguiera con el éxito comercial. 

 

El disco comienza con la salida de Clive Burr por problemas personal y de tiempo y en su lugar entra Nicko McBrain, entonces se mudan a Jersey para la composición tomando el Hotel Le Chalet como base, ensayando en el restaurante, luego viajan a las Bahamas para grabar el disco que finaliza en Marzo, el nombre es curioso ya que fue el primero de la banda que no usa un tema del disco como nombre sino que aquí extraen un expresión del tema "Still Life" que era "Piece Of Mind" ya que el título que iban a usar era "Food For Thought", pero cuando decidieron que la mascota "Eddie" iba a ser lobotomizado en la portada fue cuando vinieron con ese título, además de un pasaje del Apocalipsis que fue un poco alterado para el disco que se leía, "Y Dios limpiará las lagrimas de sus ojos, y ya no habra más Muerte, tampoco lamento ni llanto, Tampoco habra más mente, porque las cosas anteriores ya pasaron".

 

En cuanto a las letras, el disco refleja mucho el interes de la novela "Dune" de Frank Herbert de 1965, con la canción "To Tame A Land", el tema "Sun And Steel" esta basado en Samurai, de Miyamoto Musashi, y el título del ensayo de "Yukio Mishima, "Still Life" esta inspirada en el corto "The Inhabitant Of The Lake" de Ramsey Campbell, y "The Trooper" en "The Charge Of The Light Brigade" de Alfred Lord Tennyson, de igual manera hay influencias fílmicas en algunos temas como "Where Eagles Dare" en el film de Brian G. Hutton, "Quest Of Fire" esta basada en un film de Jean-Jacques Annaud, con "Revelations" hay notas de un himno cristiano "O God Of Earth And Altar" de G. K. Chesterton y la parte final fue influenciada por Aleister Crowley, mientras que "The Flight Of Icarus" fue inspirada en la mitología Griega.

Otras curiosidades dentro del disco incluyen un mensaje oculto que solo se podía escuchar si la canción era tocada al revés, algo puesto a propósito para burlarse de los críticos que acusaban a la banda de satánica, y que era un mensaje del baterista Nicko McBrain haciendo una mímica del actor John Bird de su impresión de Idi Amin, que decía "What ho said the t'ing with the three bonce', don´t meddle with things you don't understand". y eso fue porque la banda estaba molesta por haber sido acusados en los Estados Unidos de ser adoradores del demonio y de hecho la frase solía decirla el baterista cuando se había pasado de copas y en realidad dice algo sin sentido pero la idea era darle algo a los fundamentalistas para que quedaran como tontos demostrándoles que nada de lo que decían de ellos era cierto. 

 

El single "Flight Of Icarus" alcanzó el No. 3 en el Reino Unido, impulsando las ventas del disco, lo mismo paso en los Estados Unidos, logrando el beneplácito de la crítica, quitando del pedestal al icónico "Number Of The Beast" del No. 1 y colocando a este por encima, el disco fue considerado esencial para aquellos que tenían un interés en el metal, aunque por otro lado fue considerado por algunos como un disco regular que había disminuido mucho en cuanto a melodía.

La Noticia: Dan A Conocer A Los Nominados A La Inducción Del "Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame" 2023

Se acaba de dar a conocer el listado de los nominados a la inducción al Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame 2023, como recordaremos, para poder ser elegibles tanto un artista individual como una banda tiene que haber lanzado su primera grabación comercial al menos hace 25 años previo a las nominaciones, esta vez son 8 de los 14 nominados los que compiten por primera vez siendo estos Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, George Michael, Willie Nelson, The White Stripes y Warren Zevon, con la curiosidad de que este año es el primero de elegibilidad para Missy Elliott y The White Stripes.

BMG ha lanzado un triple álbum en vinilo conmemorativo para celebrar el 40 Aniversario del lanzamiento del álbum seminal de Iron Maiden, "The Number Of The Best" primero que contó con Bruce Dickinson en las vocales y que los catapulto a la fama internacional, para la ocasión comparten un nuevo clip visualizador del tema "Total Eclipse" que venía incluido dentro del disco, este nuevo paquete incluye el famoso "Beast Over Hammersmith" disponible por primera vez en vinilo y se trata de un concierto celebrado en Marzo de 1982 en el famoso Hammersmith Odeon de Londres como parte del Beast On The Road World Tour y que se grabó tan solo unos días antes del lanzamiento oficial del disco.

Rocktrospectiva: El Poderoso E Implacable "Number Of The Beast" Cumple 40 Años

Lanzado el 22 de Marzo de 1982, "The Number Of The Beast" fue el 3er., álbum de estudio y la obra cumbre de la banda metalera Inglesa, Iron Maiden, fue el primero que contó con el vocalista Bruce Dickinson y el último con el baterista Clive Burr, el disco consiguió éxito comercial y buena crítica que lo llevo alcanzar la cima del Chart de álbumes del Reino Unido y el top 40 del Billboard 200, gracias a los dos singles "Run To The Hills" y la poderosa "The Number Of The Beast" que alcanzó el top ten en el Reino Unido. 

 

Considerado uno de los mejores álbumes de metal de la historia, vino en el momento más oportuno para la banda, que si bien ya habían logrado la consagración en 1981 con "Killers" pronto surgieron los problemas con Paul Di'Anno, gracias a su comportamiento, entonces fue urgente reemplazarlo y quien mejor que Bruce Dickinson para ocupar la vacante. 

El disco es el primero con temas de Adrian Smith, además que las letras adquieren un nuevo enfoque de parte de Steve Harris, todo esto con tal de aprovechar la potencia de la voz de Dickinson, lo cual fue visto y aprovechado a la perfección por el productor Martin Birch, quien estaba obsesionado con sacarle el mejor provecho a la voz de Bruce, lo cual quedó de manifiesto en temas como "Children Of The Damned", "The Prisoner" y la icónica "Run To The Hills", cuyo video traía escena de un filme de Buster Keaton logró el éxito inmediato en la MTV que ayudo a llevarlo al No. 1 en el Reino Unido pero lo mejor estaba por venir cuando se lanzó la legendaria "The Number Of The Beast" si la banda era conocida, con este tema se volvieron globalmente famosos gracias al intenso sonido, los solos y ese gritó desgarrador de Dickinson al principio, el tema fue inspirado por una pesadilla que Harris tuvo al ver "The Omen" a altas horas de la madrugada, también iban a narrar un pasaje del libro de las revelaciones de la Biblia por medio de Vincent Price pero este les iba cobrar demasiado por lo que usaron al actor Barry Clayton, por otro lado, también les trajo problemas en especial por grupos de activistas Cristianos por la portada y por ciertas referencias supuestamente satánicas. 

El disco fue una gozada de principio a fin, e incluía otros temas brillantes como "The Prisoner" inspirada en la serie Británica,  o la que tomó Adrian Smith de su antigua banda "22 Acacia Avenue", la poderosa "Gangland" y que decir de la intensa "Hallowed Be Thy Name" que la hizo uno de los temas más épicos del metal Británico.

Pese a los líos con los activistas, el disco fluyo muy bien, sin querer la banda terminó grabando uno de los discos de heavy metal más legendarios de todos los tiempos, era perfecto de principio a fin, en cuanto a sonido y hasta la portada obra de Derek Riggs muy ad hoc para la ocasión.

Rocktrospectiva: El Potente E Innovador "Somewhere In Time" Cumple 35 Años

Lanzado el 29 de Septiembre de 1986, "Somewhere In Time" fue el 6to., álbum de estudio de la legendaria banda metalera Inglesa, Iron Maiden, fue uno de sus discos más innovadores y más caros que hayan hecho, contaron por primera vez con el uso de la guitarra sintetizadora para ampliar su sonido. la banda venía de tocar 187 conciertos en su última gira masiva previo a las grabaciones, fue duro porque la gira fue extenuante y casi que dreno las energías de la banda, y por ese motivo es que se dice que fue el disco que no contó con contribuciones de parte de Bruce Dickinson, ya que la banda rechazó todas. 

 

Harris comentó excusando a Dickinson que el cansancio de la gira hizo mucho más mella en Dickinson que en el resto de la banda, pero entonces Adrian Smith salio al rescato escribiendo buenos temas entre ellos los singles "Wasted Years" y "Strange In A Strange Land", que fue el único tema que no uso sintetizadores. 

El uso de los sintetizadores se dio de la manera más curiosa, tras la exhausta gira, la banda tuvo cuatro meses para recuperarse, entonces por un lado Harris, Smith y Murray comenzaron a experimentar con nuevo equipo, lo cual influyó mucho en el sonido del disco, la banda descubrió las bondades que los sintetizadores adaptados a las guitarras podían darle a Iron Maiden, fue también el más caro, ya que la batería y el bajo fueron grabados en las Bahamas, las vocales en Holanda y las mezclas terminaron haciéndose en New York,

 

La temática que la banda uso en el disco tenía que ver con el espacio, el tiempo y las cuestiones futuristas muy al estilo del filme "Blade Runner", lo cual quedó evidenciado en temas como "Wasted Years", "Caught Somewhere In Time", "Stranger In A Strange Land" y por supuesto en el track "Deja-Vu", no obstante, Harris comentó que el disco jamás fue pensado en algo tipo conceptual, simplemente se dieron las cosas así, tras el lanzamiento del disco, la mayoría de los temas aquí ya no volvieron a ser interpretados en directo con la excepción de "Wasted Years y "Heaven Can Wait", que siguen siendo interpretadas por la banda.

 

La recepción del disco fue variada, los fanáticos se sorprendieron por el nuevo sonido, que era necesario para darle un nuevo aire a la banda y los hacía alejarse de las hair bands de corte glam rock, el sonido Maiden exploraba sonidos más progresivos y épicos, y eso fue apreciado por los fans que se mantuvieron fieles al grupo. La Portada es otra curiosidad, la cual fue diseñada por Derek Riggs, manteniendo una serie de curiosidades y alusiones a otras canciones que merecen post aparte.

Iron Maiden estrega otro increíble clip para su nuevo single "Stratego" que se extrae de su nuevo álbum "Senjutsu", se trata de otro video animado, el cual se estreno en el canal AdultSwim, el clip dirigido por Gustaf Holtenäs cuenta con la animación de Blinkink y es acerca del esqueleto de un fallecido guerrero Samurai que vuelve del más allá y poco a poco va recuperando su forma, carne y alma y listo para continuar con la lucha, ciertas imágenes de Calabozos y Dragones me vienen a la mente, el disco "Senjutsu" se lanzó al mercado a inicios del mes.

La legendaria banda metalera Iron Maiden nos entrega su segundo single "Stratego, nuevo corte de su nuevo disco "Senjutsu" a lanzarse el próximo 3 de Septiembre, el tema ha sido compuesto por el guitarrista Janick Gers junto a Steve Harris, a diferencia del primer single, este es mucho más melódico haciendo énfasis en el bajo y el ritmo para dar la impresión que cabalgan, además de los arreglos de teclado para darle más brillo y estilo al tema, destacamos el gran solo para darle una tonalidad épica al mismo.

La legendaria banda metalera Iron Maiden estrena el clip de su nuevo single "The Writing On The Wall", primera canción de la banda en seis años y el primer corte del disco "Senjutsu" a la venta el próximo 3 de Septiembre, una canción que comienza con una guitarra acústica y mientras avanza se van agregando las distorsiones ganando fuerza hasta convertirse en un típico tema de la banda, un estribillo pegadizo y con un sonido que apela lo clásico de Maiden no digamos el increíble solo, además, viene acompañada de un tremendo clip dirigido por Nicas Livesey mostrandonos a los cuatro jinetes del apocalipsis que van en busca de una fortaleza donde se encuentra un ser supremo y a donde estan llegando todos los líderes corruptos del mundo y de la mano de Eddie destruyen ese refugio de la perversión y la corrupción.

La Noticia: Se Dan A Conocer Los Nominados Para Su Inducción Al Salon De La Fama Del Rock & Roll 2021

El Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ha develado a los 16 nominados para su clase del 2021, una serie de artistas entre los que destacan, Kate Bush, Devo, The Go-Go's, New York Dolls, Rage Against The Machine, LL Cool J y Iron Maiden entre los que nos interesan por sobre las demas nominaciones en donde incluyan una serie de artistas tan dispares como Mary J. Blige, Foo Fighters, Chak Chan, Jay Z, Fela Kuti y Tina Turner entre otros. 

 

La lista final de los que seran inducidos sera anunciada en Mayo, luego de que los miembros hagan su decisión y luego la inducción será como siempre en Cleveland en el otoño próximo. Los fans también pueden votar por sus favoritos en el siguiente link donde tendrán derecho a seleccionar hasta 5 artistas: Fan Vote 2021, hasta el 30 de Abril cuando se cierren las votaciones finales. Como siempre hemos dicho, los artistas son elegibles 25 años después de su primera grabación, para algunos de los nominados no es la primera vez, como el caso de Kate Bush que fue nominada en el 2017, Devo fue en el 2018, mientras que algunos de los nominados como The Go-Go’s, Foo Fighters, Iron Maiden, Jay-Z, Carole King, Fela Kuti, y Dionne Warwick, será su primera vez.

Rocktrospectiva: El Icónico "Killers" Cumple 40 Años

Lanzado un 2 de Febrero de 1981, "Killers" fue el segundo álbum de estudio de la banda Británica metalera Iron Maiden, el disco es famoso por ser el primero con el guitarrista Adrian Smith, y el último con el vocalista Paul Di'Anno, quien gracias a su abuso y problemas con la cocaina y el alcohol tuvo que ser reemplazado de una vez por todas y esto daría paso a una nueva era para la banda, gracias a la llegada del gran Bruce Dickinson.

 

El disco también fue el primero en ser producido por Martin Birch, quien tras este trabajo, pasaría a producir los siguientes ocho discos de la banda hasta el "Fear Of The Dark" de 1992. Entre otras peculariedades del disco se puede mencionar que fue el primero y único que contiene dos canciones totalmente instrumentales que fueron escritas en casi toda su totalidad por Steve Harris, excepto "Twilight Zone" que fue co-escrita., las instrumentales fueron "The Ides Of March" y "Genghis Khan". Pero el disco también ofrecía otros grandes tracks, como por ejemplo el single "Purgatory" que es de lo mejor del repertorío de la banda, también estaba el tema "Murders In The Rue Morgue" basada en la historia homónia del gran Edgar Allan Poe, "Prodigal Son" poderoso temas que fueron escritos en años previos al lanzamiento del disco debut de la banda en 1980, en un principio estas no fueron escritas de manera profesional hasta las sesiones para "Killers", con la excepción del track "Wrathchild" cuya versión de 1979 fue llegada a usar. 

Hay otros temas como "The Ides Of March", que tiene ciertos rasgos de un tema de la banda Samson, que curiosamente dentro de sus componentes en las vocales estaba un tal Bruce Dickinson quién a la postre se convertiría en el cantante oficial de la banda tras el despido de Paul Di'Anno, eso no quiere decir que este tema se una copia, ya que letra fue escrita en 1977 por Harris, no podemos dejar pasar por alto "Thunderburst" otro poderoso tema que fue compuesto por Harris y los cuatro miembros de Samson.

El disco fue todo un éxito y marcó el inicio de una gran época para la banda, en el Reino Unido pasó 8 semanas en los listados, mientras que en Estados Unidos permitío que la banda saliera de gira por primera vez cimentando las bases del culto a la banda, apoyando a Judas Priest en algunos casos, recordemos que por aquel entonces, la música metalera comenzaba a tener un auge sin precedentes y este disco fue uno de los que ayudó a elevar la popularidad del genéro a principios de los 80's

Rocktrospectiva: El Seminal "Iron Maiden" Cumple 40 Años

Lanzado un 14 de abril de 1980, el disco debut homónimo de la legendaria banda metalera Británica Iron Maiden, es considerado como la piedra angular del heavy metal y uno de los discos que impulsaron la edad de oro del metal en los 80's, pero también impulso otros sub-generos como el speed, trash, death, y hasta el grunge, gracias a una curiosa pero cautivadora mezcla entre una actitud punk y una obsesión sonora metalera.

Hay que situarse en ese momento en el Reino Unido, en plena época de transición entre el punk y el heavy metal, por aquel entonces el punk buscaba mantenerse comercialmente activo mientras que la nueva ola de bandas metaleras Británica reclamaban su espacio, entre ellas una banda del east end Londinense mejor conocido como Iron Maiden, la cual era comandada por el bajista Steve Harris, junto a la intensa voz de Paul Di'Anno la banda comenzó a ganar preponderancia y se viene entonces la grabación de lo que sería su carta de presentación.

Pese a que el resultado final no gusto para a la banda por la falta de calidad y de interés de parte del productor, Wil Malone, este gozó de enorme éxito en el Reino Unido y Europa continental, así como el beneplácito de la crítica, el disco fue completado en tan solo 13 días en los Kingsway Studios en enero de 1980, aunque los antecedentes dicen que la banda intento con otros dos productores, Guy Edwards que no gusto por la calidad bastante lodosa por decirlo así en su producción y el otro Andy Scott que fue despedido tras insistir que Harris tocará con una púa en vez de sus dedos, hasta llegar con Malone, pese a todo eso, los fans prefieren el sonido crudo de la grabación en vez de algo demasiado producido, pero el problema era que para Harris, el disco sonaba mucho a punk rock, y la banda odiaba todo lo relacionado al punk.

Y es que el disco contaba con buenos temas, además que la cruda producción pero al a vez contundente lograba un tremendo efecto entre la voz de Di'Anno con las oscuras letras de Harris, y por supuesto las guitarras que son vigorosas. Del disco se lanzó originalmente la increíble "Running Free", todo un himno que logró darle el impulso necesario al disco para que este alcanzará el No. 4 en el Reino Unido, y llegó al No. 34 en los singles en el Reino Unido, hay un detalle curioso con esta canción, ya que la banda se negó a interpretar el tema a puro playback en los Top of the Pops, y se convirtieron en la primera banda que no hacía mímica desde The Who en 1972, el siguiente fue "Sanctuary" un single que se lanzó el 7 de junio de 1980 y que es acreditada a Rob Angelo a quien le pagaron £300 por los derechos del tema, tenía un portada hermosa con Eddie la mascota de la banda encima de la maltrecha Margaret Thatcher, lo que le ganó a la banda publicidad.

El disco también tenía otros temas como "Strange World" que originalmente venía de 1975, "Charlotte The Harlot", la única canción que ha escrito Dave Murray por su cuenta, y que es uno de los cuatro temas de la banda que hablan de la prostituta ficticia "Charlotte", "Phantom Of The Opera" es una de las preferidas de la banda y a menudo se sigue tocando en directos, la pieza instrumental "Transylvania", y por supuesto estaban también los temas "Iron Maiden", "Prowler", y "Remember Tomorrow", para completar el increíble y crudo debut de una de las bandas más icónicas del rock. 

El disco fue exitoso y recibió críticas inmediatas que lo definían como el sonido metalero de los 80's, mezclando velocidad y rampante ferocidad que hacían palidecer a los track metaleros de los 60's y 70's, y que hasta la fecha es considerado como el disco que definió el sonido tempranero de la banda que era la rabia, agresividad y poder. Después las cosas cambiarían con una banda más consolidada ya sin Paul Di'Anno, logrando un amplío éxito comercial de la mano de Bruce Dickinson pero esa ya es otra historia.
