Released on 14 August, 1984, "Phantoms" was the third studio album by English new wave band The Fixx, the album spawned four singles, Sunshine In The Shade", "Less Cities, More Moving People", "I Will" and the hit single "Are We Ourselves?".
After releasing the massive succesful "Reach The Beach", the band recorded their follow-up "Phantoms" although the album wasn't as good as its predeccesor, this new album was a little bit more resious that turned into a fairly good record, the band was at the top of their game, they had an original sound thanks in part for the using of echoing synths and clean-processed guitars and cavernous drums that backed up Cy Curnin's voice, providing good fillers and singles "Are We Ourselves?" is a classic 1980s new wave tune standard, "Lose Face" is astonishing, the reggae-sound alike on "Sunshine In The Shade" and Woman On A Train" are fine examples of The Fixx sound, the rest of the album has a a long, moody synth ballads such as the intense "Less Cities, More Moving People" and the hyperbole sound of "I Will".
Unfortunately for the album and the band, this arrived in one of the greatest year of pop music, 1984, even though the album is a great succesor of the remarkable "Reach The Beach", which made a significant album, taking advantages on new wave which was in a sort of ascendant influence with synthesizers playing all over, the album is journey through a different vibrant ideas, check other tracks such a "Phantom Living" and "Facing The Wind" which for every fan of the band these are masterpieces full of emotion.
The album was a landmark recording of its time,
