Rocktrospectiva: The Refreshing "Made In England" Turns 30

Released on 17 March 1995 "Made In England" was the 24th., studio album by Elton John, produced by John and Greg Penny, his first album since Leather Jackets without producer Chris Thomas. The album was dedicated to John's boyfriend and future husband David Furnish. It was also dedicated to the memory of Denis Gauthier and Peter Williams. The album spawned four singles "Believe", "Made In England", "Blessed" & "Please".

 

The album was largely recorded a year earlier, in the early months of 1994, just before the release of Elton’s new songs with Sir Tim Rice on the soundtrack of The Lion King. As Made In England emerged, the flamboyant frontman’s own circle of life had him turning 48 years old. "Believe," the album’s Grammy-nominated lead single. 

 

Co-producer Penny had made his name as kd lang's producer, and worked with Elton when he oversaw the pair’s version of Womack & Womack’s “Teardrops,” from John’s 1993 Duets album. Made In England also saw the redoubtable Paul Buckmaster return to the fold as arranger for the first time since the A Single Man album of 1978. On an album of entirely single-word titles, apart from "Made In England" itself, the Grammy-winning arranger added his sure touch to four songs, including the introductory hit and perhaps the album’s greatest hidden gem, "Belfast." The atmospheric song, with a Taupin lyric reflecting the Northern Irish "Troubles", featured Buckmaster conducting his own splendid orchestral arrangement. Teddy Borowiecki’s accordion, Paul Brennan’s pipes and flute, and Dermont Crehan’s violin all added sonic texture.

 

The track "Man" sported British singer-songwriter Paul Carrack on keyboards, while other album highlights included the catchy "Please" and the reflective "House," In a work whose passion and purpose may well have been inspired by John and Taupin's parallel commitment to AIDS projects, he wrote, 2the highlight is "House," an expression of loss and need that ranks with such classic works as "Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me" for instance.

 

The superior string and horn arrangement on "Latitude" was by George Martin, the owner of AIR Studios in London, where Made In England was recorded. 

 

"Made In England" is a startlingly fine album, it sounds, in other words, as if Taupin had a lot to get off his chest this time around, but his mouthpiece, as usual, was more interested in the sound of the words than in their meaning. Which, given the predictability of the message, seems to have been just as well.

Rocktrospectiva: Elton John's Highest-Selling Álbum In The UK "Sleeping With The Past" Turns 35

 

Released on 29 August 1989, "Sleeping With The Past" was Elton John's 22nd., studio album and one of his most succesful in certain countries such a Denmark and of course his native home soil, the album spawned four singles "Healing Hands", "Sacrifice", "Bar At The End On The Street" & "Whispers", the single "Sacrifice" became a chart-topper in the UK it was his first solo No. 1, this propelled the album to platinum status in the UK and gold in the United States. 

 

The style for the songs lies on 1960's R6B, according to John and Bernie Taupin, with a renewed energy and creativity, the duo sought to create a cohesive album with a consistent theme, inspired in huge part by the success of Billy Joel's 1983 "An Innocent Man", so, Taupin would listen to '60s soul songs and use those songs from the past to inspire new lyrics for their album. John would then use Taupin's lyrics as a guide to write a soul-influenced song based on the original source of inspiration. 

 

In the end, both parts eventually sit down and decide what we want to make, and make a cohesive album with a collection of songs that sound like they all fit together. So, the duo came up with the idea of going back and listening to the songs that inspired us when we first started writing songs, the time when R&B records were really great, So, Elton John started dragging out all these old records and listening to them to get a feel, and eventually decided to basically make a white-soul album for the late ‘80s.

 

Months after the album's completion, John attributed its creative success to the certainty that some unpleasant chapters in his life, such as his battle with The Sun tabloid, were drawing to a close. In 1989 he said: "This is the first album I've made where I didn't have any pressures hanging over me...When I started it, I knew my personal life was going to be sorted out". "I was sober when I recorded Sleeping with the Past - just". but that changed soon after: "I went off the rails when I did the tour afterwards". During the tour's first week, he collapsed onstage.

 

During John's 1989 American tour he realized that MCA records was giving little support  to his brand new album. Eventually he canceled tour shows and interviews. In New Haven, Connecticut, on October 18, 1989, he rushed through his performance rarely talking to the audience. Midway through his concert, he announced he would not perform material from the new album because MCA was not promoting it. In addition to "Sacrifice", "Healing Hands" and "Club at the End of the Street", which were singles in both the UK and US, the songs "Whispers" and "Blue Avenue" were released as singles in parts of Continental Europe. "Whispers" reached No. 11 in France, whilst "Blue Avenue" managed to reach the Top 75 in the Netherlands. 

 

Three other songs were recorded during the sessions: "Dancing In The End Zone" and "Love Is A Cannibal," both with Davey Johnstone as a co-writer, were released as B-sides to two of the album’s singles. "Love Is Worth Waiting For" had been demo during the Reg Strikes Back sessions the year before and was further worked on at Puk but has never been released. This song, however, was performed live at an Athletes and Entertainers for Kids event in Los Angeles in July 1988, making one of only two Elton John/Bernie Taupin songs to be performed live but never officially issued. "Love Is a Cannibal" was featured in the 1989 film Ghostbusters II.

 

The album received mixed reviews, eventually peaked at No. 6 on UK charts, but a year later due the re-released of "Sacrifice" and "Healing Hands" in June 1990, that propelled the labum to rise to the No. 1 position, this eventually helped the album to became Elton's highest-selling studio album in the UK and spawned his first solo No. 1 hit in his home

Rocktrospectiva: The Fairly "Breaking Hearts" Turns 40

 

Released on 18 June 1984, "Breaking Hearts" was the 18th., studio album by English musician Elton John, it would be the last album to feature all core members of the Elton John Band line up, Davey Johnstone, Dee Murray, and Nigel Olsson, making four top 40 singles "Sad Songs (Say So Much)", "Who Wears These Shoes" and "In Neon", and finally the top 5 in the UK "Passengers".  

"Breaking Hearts" was also the first album to not feature a string or horn section on any track, and one of the two records that features the unofficial member Ray Cooper. The album was built it from the success of his previous album "Too Low For Zero", Elton John retained his classic quartet, and reunited with Bernie Taupin in order to attempt a musical resurrection of their early-to-mid 70's sound, although this is on his most consistent efforts during his half decade on Geffen Records between 1981-1986.

 

The album has nice tracks, focusing on the hits "Who Wears These Shoes" and the top 5 "Sad Songs (Say So Much)", a confident and joy song that Elton still performs until now, both are truly massive, but you have some others like the oftenly over look track such as "L'il Refrigerator" a truly rocker, "Restless" is one of the most heavy and groovy track on the record, "In Neon" is a fine track and the reggae-dub influenced "Passengers" in one of the best tracks well-deserved to be played in Adult Contemporary radio format, and finally the underrated "Breaking Hearts "(Ain't What It Used To Be)", but the majority of the LP is indistinguishable from much of his mid 1980s and early 1990s catalogue. 

 

The new technologies available for Elton John helped a lot, it was total change, they had drum machines that recorded everything inmediately, so practically it tooks no more than two weeks to finish the record, the album finally consolidated the success of the previous "2 Low 4 Zero" elevating Elton John to an upper echelon on the charts all over the world.

Rocktrospectiva: El Favorable "Reg Strikes Back" Cumple 35 Años

Lanzado el 24 de Junio de 1988 "Red Strikes Back" fue el 21avo., álbum de estudio del crooner Británico Elton John, su en su momento bautizado como su regreso auto-proclamado contra todo pronostico en especial la prensa amarillista y por eso el título del mismo en alusión también a su nombre de pila Reginald Kenneth Dwight. 

 

Fue un disco exitoso, el 3ero., en los 80s., que logró meterse en el top 20 del Billboard 200, además fue el primer disco lanzado bajo el sello MCA, por lo que recibió mucha buena vibra previo a su lanzamiento, aunque a la larga el resultado fue menos inspirador que sus primeros discos lanzados en la década, y es que se dice que muchas veces es una mala señal cuando los artistas re interpretaban algunos de sus clásicos y Elton lo hizo aquí con el tema de relleno "Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters, Pt. 2", aunque otros también acusan al disco de ser muy poco variado sin colorido excepto por algunos tracks como la archifamosa "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That", y la balada "A Word In Spanish" del resto no hay mucho que rescatar, aunque el otro single "Town Of Plenty" tuvo una participación destacada, y para muchos sería el principio de una sequía de hits por casi cinco años.

Sería el último disco del bajista Dee Murray previo a su muerte en 1992, aparecen también Nigel Olsson viejo baterista y conocido y de la mano del productor Chris Thomas se dieron a la obra, casi un año después de la cirugía de garganta a la que se sometió el cantante, el disco tuvo mejor acogida en Estados Unidos ya que los primeros dos singles llegaron al No. 2 y No. 19 respectivamente mientras que en el Reino Unido, solo "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That" la única que entro en la lista llegando al No. 30, los otros quedaron muy fueron incluso del top 40. 

 

Cabe destacar "A Word In Spanish" tema brillante con una guitarra española para darle sabor con la originalidad de los temas de John-Taupin de los 70s., y "I Don't Want To Go On With You Like That" era un tema synth pop con sonido jazz bañado en pop muy de finales de los 80's., inicios de los 90's., que gusto mucho y se convirtió en un clásico del repertorio, ademas de "The Camera Never lies", "Japanese Tracks" y "Town Of Plenty" le dieron el toque al disco pero tiene muchos temas relleno que no vinieron aportarle nada al disco. 

 

Pese a ello, se le recuerda 35 años después por lo bien que sonaron los primeros dos singles en la radio y en amplía rotación en MTV/VH1 y porque mantenía ese sonido que tanto gustaba de John en los 80s., aunque no aportaría mucho a su carrera para la crítica.

Rocktrospectiva: El Fabuloso "Too Low For Zero" Cumple 40 Años

Lanzado el 30 de Mayo de 1983 "Too Low For Zero" fue el 17avo., álbum de estudio del crooner Elton John, el disco marcó un retorno a la senda del éxito internacional, luego de que sus discos previos fallaron en lograr hacerlo ademas de bajas de ventas en sus álbumes comparado con lo que logro en los años 70s., del disco se lanzaron cuatro singles "I'm Still Standing", "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues", "Kiss The Bride" y "Too Low For Zero", siendo los primeros dos los más importantes del mismo y que tuvieron buen movimiento en todo el mundo. 

 

Era la primera vez desde 1976 que volvia a trabajar con Bernie Taupin quien escribió todas las letras, además de unirse de nuevo con su vieja banda de los 70s., Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson y Davey Johnstone, bajo la producción de Chris Tomas comenzaron a trabajar usando sintetizadores además del piano ya que eso le daba mejor sintonía a Elton John para escribir mejor temas y más rápidos de rock que con el piano, completando el disco en dos semanas. 

 

El disco se convirtió en el segundo mejor vendido de los años 80s., para Elton John, produjo varios hits hoy clásicos gracias por los videos que acompañaron al mismo y que tuvieron alta rotación en la MTV, y otros programas de clip musicales, ayudando al disco a estar casi un año en el Billboard 200, tras el éxito de "Jump Up" de la mano de los singles "Empy Garden" y "Blue Eyes" esto preparo el camino para "Too Low For Zero", que logró no solo la reunión de los viejos colegas que funcionó a las mil maravilla ya que todos estaban en su mejor momento creativo, por lo que los temas además de tener potencial para hit single eran formidables en forma y sonido, "Cold As Christmas" tenía reminiscencias a la brillante "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" pero que era considerada junto a "One More Arrow" como sin sabor,  además de temas con fuerza pop rock como la vengadora "I'm Still Standing", "Crystal", "Too Low For Zero" y "Kiss The Bride", la impecable balada "I Guess That's Why The Call It The Blues" que tenía un video encantador que le dio fuerza al single, por lo tanto era un disco brillante y prueba de lo que Elton podía lograr como artista veterano. 

 

La crítica tuvo opiniones variadas, ya que muchos consideraron un buen paso adelante con fuertes temas pero también con otros débiles con pobres letras, pero en general se podría decir que el disco funcionó porque mostraba a un Elton John en el punto más alto de su creatividad y que daría paso a otros singles que dejarían buenos y famosos singles.

Más de 35 años después de haber lanzado el single caritativo "That's What Friends Are For" allá por 1985, Elton John y Stevie Wonder vuelven a reunirse para lanzar "Finish Line", el último single de lo que será su disco de colaboraciones "The Lockdown Sessions", el tema tiene la vibra de los temas de Elton John de los 80's, y la voz de Wonder suena tan juvenil dandole al single jubilo y exhuberancia.

Rocktrospectiva: El Aceptable "Fire On Ice" Cumple 35 Años

Lanzado el 4 de Noviembre de 1985, "Fire On Ice" fue el 19avo., álbum de estudio en la carrera del legendario Elton John, fue producido por Gus Dudgeon, y significó la vuelta a ciertos origenes y el cambio de algunos elementos clave en la carrera del artista, en especial en el line-up de la banda, muchos de ellos habían tocado en la gira anterior del artista, además contó con la participación de algunas estrellas como George Michael, Nik Kershaw, Siste Sledge, Pino Palladino, Mel Gaynor y Millie Jackson, y por último pero no menos importante, Roger Taylor y John Deacon de Queen quienes participaron en el temma "Too Young". 

 

El disco tuvo un éxito variado, aunque es recordado especialmento por sus dos top 20, la archifamosa "Nikita", y "Wrap Her Up", que fueron los que le dieron el reconocimiento al disco. Vuelve a contar con la colaboración de Bernie Taupin, diez nuevas canciones escritas durante la primera parte de 1985, y con las colaboracions que llegaron, ayudaron a darle al disco un sabor diferente, en especial podemos destacar la balada "Nikita" con un increíble video que retrata el check point Charlie en una época en la que todavía existía el muro de Berlin, una ironía de amor entre el artista y una guardia de frontera aunque sabemos que Elton John es homosexual y que el título Nikita obedece a un nombre masculino en Rusia, pero acordemonos de la Femme Nikita que hace referencia a una mujer, el video fue dirigido por Ken Russell, y obedece a los canones de la época y hasta me recuerda algunos films de intriga de aquel entonces, el tema fue un hitazo y aquí en Guatemala es uno de los más conocidos y atemporales del artista.

De hecho "Nikita" le dio el impulso necesario al disco, llevandoló al No. 3 del Reino Unido siendo lo más alto alcanzado en aquel entonces desde que grabó "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" en 1976, y en el Billboard llegó al No. 7, pero unos meses después salío el otro gran single "Wrap Her Up", que contó con la colaboración de Davey Johnstone en las guitarras y George Michael en las vocales, y con un video que incluía legendarias divas como Marlene Dietrich, Marilyn Monroe, Doris Day, Brigitte Bardot y otras más contemporaneras como Samantha Fox, Nastassja Kinski y Kiki Dee protagonizando el video de Russell Mulcahy, qque ayudaron al disco pero entonces vino "Cry To Heaven" que no fue tan exitoso, pero eso no significa que el disco solo haya tenido estos dos buenos temas.

 

Hay otros como "This Town" el single que abría el set tenía a Elton revisitando sus raíces soul, diría después que el tema sería su favorito del disco, otros temas similares eran "Tell Me What The Papers Say" y "Candy By The Pound", tenía cierta similitud con coros de Kiki Dee y Dave Mattacks en la batería, no hay que olvidarse de unos de los temas clave del disco "Too Young" con la participación de Taylor y Deacon de Queen en el bajo y la batería con mucha fuerza y para cerrar el disco estaba la balada a lo Elton John "Shoot Down The Moon", con una participación en el bajo de Pino Palladino.

Primicia: Rocket Man

         

Con motivo del lanzamiento del masivo disco de rarezas y lados B "The Other Side" para el próximo 8 de Marzo, se ha rescatado el tema "Rocket Man" original de Elton John y que Bush reconocío que era uno de sus temas preferidos por lo que decidio hacerle una versión muy a su estilo y lanzarlo como single el 2 de Diciembre de 1991, llegó al No. 12 en el Reino Unido y el 2 en Australia y fue galardonado por los lectores de The Observer como el "Cover Más Grande De Todos Los Tiempos", por cierto que el curioso video que entre bonito y curioso que fue dirigido por la propia Kate Bush y que ahora recordamos como relanzamiento por motivo de la colección de rarezas.

Rocktrospectiva: El Triunfante "Reg Strikes Back" Cumple 30 Años

Lanzado oficialmente el 24 de Junio de 1988, "Reg Strikes Back" 21avo., álbum en la carrera del Británico Elton John, fue promocionado como su regreso triunfal contra la mala vibra recibida de parte de la prensa y algunos medios.

Por lo que uso el diminutivo de su nombre "Reg" (Reginal Kenneth Dwight) el cual fue editado bajo el sello Rocket, y que marcaba la vuelta al éxito tras el decepcionante y aburrido "Leather Jackets", para la ocasión contó con la producción de Chris Thomas, quién lo encumbró de nuevo al éxito gracias a singles como el gran "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That", que logro la posición 30 en el Reino Unido y el 2 en los Estados Unidos siendo su tema más exitoso en aquel país durante los 80's, también venían la melódica "Town Of Plenty" y la encantadora balada "A Word In Spanish" que alcanzó el No. 19 en Estados Unidos.

Además que los videos de estos temas tuvieron su rotación en la MTV por lo curioso que era el primero, mientras que el segundo obedecía a los típicos clichés del artista de contar historias esta vez la de una pareja mixta formada por una Estadounidense y un joven Latinoamericano, teniendo como fondo la ciudad de Miami aprovechando el hype que tenía en la época por la serie Miami Vice. En general se puede advertir que el disco fue una especie de catarsis para Elton John, lo cual se notó en "Town of Plenty" con guitarreos cortesía de Pete Townshend, atacando con cinismo a ls medios, la encantadora "Goodbye Marlon Brandon", en donde se notan pinceladas de New Age, haciéndole brillar gracias a la producción de Thomas, con " Heavy Traffic" probando que Elton todavía puede rockear en gran manera. 

A Guatemala solo vino "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That" que tuvo su momento de gloria en las radios locales, a pesar que "A Word In Spanish" si tuvo cierta rotación en los programas de video locales de la época, pero que en cierta manera nos dejaba buen sabor de boca y nos preparaba para el siguiente disco cargados de temas que marcaron una época también en el país.
