Rocktrospectiva: The Massive And Best Selling "True Blue" Turns 40

Released on 30 June 1986 "True Blue" was the third studio album by US singer and songwriter Madonna. The album spawned five succesful singles "Live To Tell", "Papa Don't Preach", "True Blue", "Open Your Heart" & "La Isla Bonita."

Madonna recorded the album between 1985 and 1986, collaborating with Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray on its writing and production. She had previously worked with the latter on her second studio album, Like a Virgin (1984). For the first time in her career, Madonna co-wrote and co-produced all of the tracks on True Blue. Its themes—primarily love, romance, marriage, and devotion—draw in part on her personal life and her marriage to actor Sean Penn. Musically, True Blue was a pop and dance-pop album with a soundscape characterized by synthesizers, guitars, drum machines, and backing vocal arrangements, influenced by the Motown sound, girl groups, and Latin pop.

True Blue was promoted with the Who's That Girl World Tour, the second highest-grossing female concert tour of 1987. Five singles supported the album: the US Billboard Hot 100 number-ones "Live to Tell", "Papa Don't Preach", and "Open Your Heart", as well as the top-five entries "True Blue" and "La Isla Bonita". An immediate global success, True Blue topped the music charts in a record-breaking twenty-eight countries worldwide and received multi-platinum certifications across the Americas, Europe, and the Asia–Pacific region.

After Madonna met actor Sean Penn on the set of the music video for "Material Girl", the two began dating in February 1985. She mentioned that Penn was someone whose work she admired, and she believed he felt the same. Madonna said they had "so much in common" and that "he [was] almost like my brother". After dating casually for six months, the pair married on Madonna's twenty-seventh birthday on August 16, 1985. Soon after, the newlyweds co-starred in the adventure comedy film Shanghai Surprise (1986), which was a critical and commercial failure. During her Virgin Tour in 1985, Madonna met producer Patrick Leonard, who was hired as the tour's musical director.

Following the tour's conclusion, Madonna asked Leonard if he wanted to work with her. They met at a barbecue at his home, during which he presented her with a song he had composed in his studio, titled "Love Makes the World Go Round". Madonna performed it at the Live Aid benefit concert in Philadelphia in July 1985.

Madonna and her collaborators, Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray, began recording True Blue in December 1985. For the first time in her career, Madonna co-wrote and co-produced every track on the album. She was greatly in control of the album's development and, according to Bray, was "very much in love" while recording. Madonna collaborated separately with Leonard and Bray, with all three working together collectively on only one occasion. With Leonard, the recording process was informal: he would typically develop a musical idea on piano, after which Madonna would "write a lyric, she'd sing it, and the next day we would do another song", often completing one per day. In contrast, Bray focused on "shap[ing] things and [...] creat[ing] arrangements to show off the song[s] better".

The ballad "Live to Tell" was conceived by Leonard as an instrumental for the score of Paramount's film Fire with Fire (1986). After Paramount rejected the track, he asked Madonna to write the lyrics. Pleased with the results of "Live to Tell", she kept Leonard on the project and enlisted former boyfriend, Bray, whom she had worked with on Like a Virgin. Madonna felt that he could help her create "up-tempo songs with a classic Top 40 sensibility".

The first song selected for True Blue was "Open Your Heart", it was originally titled "Follow Your Heart" and conceived as a rock track. The song was intended for singer Cyndi Lauper, although she passed it on. The Temptations were also offered the song but declined after hearing that Madonna was interested. "Follow Your Heart" was submitted to Madonna's team for True Blue; Madonna and Leonard added a bassline, turning it into a dance-pop composition. Madonna also revised the lyrics, which allowed her to get a songwriting credit, and retitled it "Open Your Heart".

"Papa Don't Preach" was written by Brian Elliot with the intention that it be performed by a singer named Christina Dent. A demo was presented to Warner Bros. executive Michael Ostin, who played it to Madonna during the recording of True Blue. Elliot had been working with Dent for six months and was initially reluctant to offer the song to another artist, but ultimately agreed, later describing the prospect of Madonna recording it as "hard to resist". The singer expressed immediate interest and acquired the song. "La Isla Bonita" was initially composed as an instrumental demo by Leonard and Bruce Gaitsch for Michael Jackson, who rejected the track.

"Where's the Party" was the only track on True Blue co-written by Madonna, Bray, and Leonard. Curtis Hudson—who co-wrote Madonna's 1983 breakthrough single "Holiday"—and Bray composed "Spotlight" for the album; although it was recorded, it was ultimately excluded from the final track list.

True Blue has been regarded as Madonna's first significant musical reinvention, departing from the bubblegum pop-oriented sound of her earlier works. It was a pop and dance-pop album with songs that take influences from Latin pop, girl groups, Motown sound, and Cuban music.

Described by Madonna as her "most personal" work at the time, True Blue aimed to reach a broader, more mature audience. Love, romance, commitment, and fidelity constitute the album's main themes. Songs such as "True Blue" and "Open Your Heart" explore romantic devotion and emotional intimacy. The title track in particular expresses devotion and loyalty to a romantic partner. Biographer Andrew Morton wrote that it is the only song on the album that was a "direct tribute to her husband [Penn]", though the entire album was "inspired by her feelings for him at this time". Similarly, author Lucy O'Brien wrote that her love for Penn "seep[s] into every song". "Papa Don't Preach" addresses teenage pregnancy, "Love Makes the World Go Round" promotes themes of anti-war and anti-poverty, and "Live to Tell" deals with deceit, mistrust, and trauma. Escapism is depicted through the idyllic portrayal of an imaginary tropical paradise in "La Isla Bonita" and the pursuit of enjoyment in "Where's the Party".

True Blue was favorably reviewed by music critics; Madonna's maturity as a vocalist, producer, and songwriter was particularly acclaimed amongst reviewers. While True Blue was not revolutionary, Madonna's voice had matured, and was so finely tailored that she actually extends the punch and appeal of the production touches". Although True Blue was generally acclaimed, some reviewers were more critical in their assessments. Dismissing the record as "warmed over Go-Gos material"

In the years following its release, True Blue has continued to garner acclaim from music critics cause the album experimented with "different sounds that are well executed as singles, with "more vocal range and lyrical complexities" than Madonna's first two albums. Even thought, the album has been one of the great dance-pop albums.

Rocktrospectiva: The Surprisingly And Daring Succesful "I'm Breathless" Turns 35

Released on 22 May 1990 "I'm Breathless (Music From And Inspired By The Film Dick Tracy" was a conceptual album by US singer Madonna, released to accompany the film Dick Tracy. The album contains three songs written by Stephen Sondheim, which were used in the film, in addition to several songs co-written by Madonna that were inspired by but not included in the film.

Madonna starred as Breathless Mahoney alongside her then-boyfriend Warren Beatty who played the title role, Dick Tracy. After filming was complete, Madonna began work on the album with Sondheim, producer Patrick Leonard and engineer Bill Bottrell. She also worked with producer Shep Pettibone on the album's first single, "Vogue".

Musically, I'm Breathless consists predominantly of jazz, swing and pop songs. The tracks reflected Madonna's showgirl personality and were influenced by her relationship with Beatty. The singer wanted to create music that would fit the style and production of the film, set in the days of the Untouchables law enforcement, and sang the songs accordingly. In some areas she pitched her vocals and belted the notes when necessary. She smoked cigarettes in order to portray the vocals of her character Breathless. Beatty and singer Mandy Patinkin were featured as duet partners on three of the songs.

In 1990, Madonna was part of the film Dick Tracy starring as Breathless Mahoney, with Warren Beatty playing the titular character. Madonna told that initially she had waited for Beatty to call her for the film. But when he did not, the singer decided to involve herself voluntarily. She pursued the part of Mahoney, but offered to work for minimum wages to avoid favoritism. Beatty had realized several positive aspects of hiring Madonna as an actress for the film. She would be inclined to develop a soundtrack for Dick Tracy and the film studio would see this as a promotional opportunity before the release of their product, since Madonna was popular as a recording artist. This would also benefit Warner Bros. Records, who would get a reason to release a new Madonna record.

Madonna was in a relationship with Beatty at that time, and her whole acting, recording and singing stemmed from impressing him with the album, which was important to her. Beatty and actor Mandy Patinkin also lent their voices for songs from the album. While I'm Breathless was being completed, it still needed a lead single. At the same time, Madonna and producer Shep Pettibone decided to compose a new song called "Vogue" to be placed on the B-side of "Keep It Together", the final single from her fourth studio album, Like a Prayer (1989), to ensure that the song would fare better on the charts. When Warner executives heard the song, they decided to release it as an A-side, and was eventually included on the album. Despite not appearing in the film, "Vogue" was used in a commercial for Dick Tracy. I'm Breathless is one of three soundtracks released alongside the film, the others being the Dick Tracy: Original Soundtrack,  and an orchestral score by Danny Elfman.

I'm Breathless is a jazz, swing and pop album where Madonna and Sondheim tried to recreate the music of the period portrayed in Dick Tracy. According to Rikky Rooksby, author of The Complete Guide to the Music of Madonna, the harmonic and melodic styles were more "complex" than the songs which Madonna was accustomed to, hence she found it difficult and demanding. She spoke about the "wilderness" of the tunes, saying that she was not confident of doing justice to the songs, and neither was Sondheim. But he kept on encouraging the singer so that the recording sessions would not be affected. Madonna also recruited producer Patrick Leonard and engineer Bill Bottrell to help her with the project. According to Lucy O'Brien, author of Madonna: Like an Icon, after Madonna's split from husband Sean Penn in 1989, the singer was comfortable in her new relationship with Beatty, which influenced the songs. The singer and Leonard enlisted a ten-piece live band and jazz musicians.

Lucy O'Brien said that the songs on I'm Breathless had a "coquettish" and "pandering nature", and was the polar opposite to Madonna's previous release, Like a Prayer, which had an introspective composition.I'm Breathless opens with the sound of an intercom and a shuffle, and power ballad "He's a Man" starts, a song which Madonna sings as if she was a "hooker stalking the boulevard". Also, Madonna's "haunting" vocals continue after the music has faded. One of the Sondheim songs, "Sooner or Later", evokes a 1930s jazz ballad with comping piano, brushed drum sounds, double bass, and horns. Conjuring the atmosphere of a smoky nightclub, the song finds Madonna in her lowest range as the melody shifts continuously. "Hanky Panky", the third song and second single, deals with sadomasochistic themes centered on a girl celebrating the pleasures of a "good spanking". It is performed in an almost comical style, and stemmed from a line in the film, where Breathless says to Tracy, "You don't know whether to hit me or kiss me." The following track on the album, "I'm Going Bananas", is a Carmen Miranda-ish song done in a Spanish accent. A salsa rhythm is predominant, with Madonna squeezing her vocal cords while singing, backed by percussion and brass. In the fifth track, "Crybaby", Madonna mimics the vocals of Betty Boop. The melody is heard over the interlining synth strings, horns and trumpets, and a bass. Rooksby explained that Madonna sang about a guy who is "too sensitive and soft", and the chorus employs a chromatic chord sequence. The next track "Something to Remember" deals with her failed marriage to Penn and was the source of inspiration for naming her 1995 compilation album. Musically, it has melancholy chords and rambling melody, which according to Taraborrelli made it the most compelling song by Madonna.

Next "Back in Business" it contains a "slow-verse-fast-chorus" sequence. According to Rooksby, "the chorus bursts into life, with Madonna clearly relishing the lyrics about good guys finishing last... the coldness of her delivery is apt for the topic." Her vocals are accompanied by muted trumpet sounds and a saxophone solo. "More" is the second Sondheim number where Madonna recites the materialistic-themed lyrics with irony, over a bouncy two-beat with tap-dancing during an instrumental break. The track consists of syncopated chord structure, tempo changes and lyrical rhymes. The arrangement switches between slow and fast tempo, requiring proper enunciation by Madonna. The final Sondheim song, "What Can You Lose", is the duet with Patinkin. It is a torch song where Patinkin supplies the male voice while Madonna sings during the second verse with strings and harmonics.

Madonna sings a two-part duet with Beatty titled "Now I'm Following You". With beats atop a riff, Madonna reveals that "Dick" is an "interesting name". The first part has strings, brass and muted horns, with a tap-dancing sequence during the intermediate piano solo and blues effect. At the last chord, the sound of the record getting stuck is heard, and a needle is drawn across the vinyl, leading into the much faster part two. The word "Dick" is continuously repeated in the main melody structure until the song ends with the sound of a record being snatched off a music player. Bill Meyers, who played piano during the recording, recalled that the song required only one take from Beatty. "Vogue" closes out the album and is musically different from the rest of the tracks. It is a dance number consisting of a "throbbing beat" and lyrically has a theme of escapism. The song talks about Vogueing, a dance form which reproduced poses from high-fashion modelling. The song also has a rap section, where Madonna names various "golden era" Hollywood celebrities, including Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe and Marlene Dietrich.

Critics gave favorable reviews praising the album as one of Madonna's greatest musical moments, and praising her vocal performance. A surprise career decision for Madonna and found that it showcased the singer's versatility and other facets of her pop personality, describing "Hanky Panky" as the best tracks on the record, and "Vogue" showed the singer "can still deliver that indefinable something extra".

Rocktrospectiva: The Standout "Like A Virgin" Turns 40

Released on 12 November 1984 "Like A Virgin" was the second studio album by Madonna, the artist was so eager to start working on its follow-up, so she selected Nile Rodgers to produce the album due to his work on Let's Dance (1983) by David Bowie, which she was a fan of. To ensure it be exactly as she envisaged it, Madonna chose all the songs for the album. Arguably, it’s her most important album but received mixed reviews from music critics: Rodgers's production received praise, but Madonna's vocals were criticized.

It became Madonna's first number one album on the Billboard 200, as well as the first female album to sell over five million copies in the United States.  Five singles were released from the album all reached the top five of the, her first No. 1 "Like A Virgin", "Material Girl", "Angel," "Into The Groove" & "Dress You Up".

After the release of her self-titled debut album, Madonna became one of the most exciting new artists of the 1980s, so she wanted to produced by herslef but label said no, so the label decided to allow Madonna to work with any producer of her choice. She picked Nile Rodgers. Madonna wanted Like a Virgin to be "stronger" than her debut, hence she chose all the songs herself. She had been penning songs and creating demos with former boyfriend and collaborator Stephen Bray since early 1984.

When Madonna first met with Rodgers, she allegedly told him, "if you don't love these songs we can't work together", to which the producer responded: "I don't love them now, but I will when I've finished working on them!". Around the time they began working on the album, Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly were pitching songs to artists. Steinberg had begun a new relationship and came up with the lyrics to "Like a Virgin". He brought the track to Kelly, who created the music and, together, recorded a demo tape. Kelly then met with Warner Bros. A&R executive Michael Ostin and had him listen to the demo; Ostin, who was set to meet Madonna the next day, thought the song was "perfect" for her. Madonna "loved" the song right away, but Rodgers wasn't convinced. He felt it was "really queer", but did it anyways.

The final song to be created for Like a Virgin was "Dress You Up". Rodgers had previously asked songwriters Andrea LaRusso and Peggy Stanziale to write a song for Madonna in the style of Chic but, due to other projects, the composition took time, when the lyrics of the song were submitted, Rodgers turned them down as he felt there was no time to compose a melody and record it for the album; however, Madonna liked them and persuaded the producer to include the track, other great tracks were "Into the Groove" was written and produced by Madonna and former Bray, inspired by the dance floor and a Puerto Rican boy the singer was attracted to, it was used on the Susan Seidelman-directed film Desperately Seeking Susan, which Madonna starred.

The composition of the album is a mix of post-disco dance music, with hip hop dashes, and certain new wave rock, the opener "Material Girl" is a synth-pop song with disco and new wave elements. The second track, "Angel", begins with the sound of twinkling synths and giggles. It is an "ode to heavenly love" with a new wave overtone, the title track, "Like a Virgin", is a "mildly titillating" dance-rock song, in which the singer talks about how true love can make a girl feel shiny and new. "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" is the only ballad on the album, as well as the most soulful."Into the Groove" is a "bumping" synth-bass line, while the lyrics celebrate "dancefloor escapism", and juxtapose music, dance, sex and love. "Dress You Up" is a "drum machine-driven" dance song with a nu-disco beat, consisting of a two-chord verse.

The seventh track, "Shoo-Bee-Doo", begins as a stripped-down piano ballad, before turning into a "deceptively bouncy ditty". The eighth track "Pretender" is a synth-pop song about seduction and the insecurity felt by Madonna as she let's things happen too fast" with a man who "isn't what he seems". And the closer "Stay" a song that features a fast triple rhythm with synths.

Described as smart, funny, sexy and irresistible, with great pop hooks, the critics highlighted Nile Rodgers production, but criticized Madonna little-girl voice onver the heavy rhythm and synth tracks comparing her like a kid on a carnival ride,  even though the album reflected her as a more versatile and artistic performer, despite being home to some of the "catchiest, not to mention most iconic tracks in pop music", Like a Virgin is made up of "mostly fillers", according to certain magazines.

Like A Virgin catapulted Madonna into global superstardom, despiyte it though it took three months to hit #1 in the U.S., the album managed to sold over 21 million copies worldwide and remains Madonna’s best-selling studio album in the U.S. It launched into mainstream culture Madonna’s brand of overt sexual liberation, manipulation of imagery and iconography, and big-tent pop song crafting that sold hundreds of millions of albums around the globe during the last four decades.

Rocktrospectiva: The Smooth And Powerful "Bedtime Stories" Turns 30

Released on 25 October 1994, "Bedtime Stories" was the sixth studio album by American singer Madonna, released after another controversial title "Erotica" and the table book "Sex", and her performance in the erotic thrille "Body Of Evidence" all of three project  received negatively comments from critics and fans alike due to their sexually explicit nature.

So, Madonna decided that she needed to soften her image if she wanted to regain her audience. The first attempt was the ballad "I'll Remember" from the soundtrack to the 1994 film With Honors, and then "Bedtime Stories", her sixth studio album, in which she decided to incorporate R&B elements, and collaborated with Babyface, Dallas Austin, and Dave Hall. She also chose to explore the British club musical scene, where genres such as dub had been growing in popularity, and hired producer Nellee Hooper.

Basically, it's a pop album with elements of R&B and hip hop, exploring lyrical themes of love and romance, but with a toned-down, less sexual approach. In the song "Human Nature", Madonna explicitly addresses the backlash and controversy surrounding her previous projects, whereas title track "Bedtime Story" saw her working with Icelandic singer Björk. The album yielded two top-three singles, "Secret" and "Take a Bow"; the latter stayed at number one for seven weeks on the chart. Follow-ups "Bedtime Story" and "Human Nature" were both top-ten hits on the UK Singles Chart and peaking the No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

Regarding a controversial period of her career, the singer recalled: "I feel I've been misunderstood. I tried to make a statement about feeling good about yourself and exploring your sexuality, but people took it to mean that everyone should go out and have sex with everyone. I decided to leave it alone because that's what everyone ended up concentrating on". Madonna came to the conclusion that she needed to "soften" her image in order to reconnect with her audience. The album was recorded at nine different studios.

Madonna started to work with powerful R&B producers such as Babyface, Dallas Austin and Dave Hall, with the first one, worked on the songs "Forbidden Love", and the ballad "Take A Bow" following her desires to chase lush ballads, then with Dallas Austin she created "Secret", "Don't Stop" and "Sanctuary" and with Dave Hall the sexy "Human Nature" the song "I'd Rather Be Your Lover" was recorded as a duet with Tupac Shakur, in a time Madonna had an affair with the late rapper, but after the rapper became involved in a sexual assault case, she decided to replaced his parts with Meshell Ndegeocello.

But despite Madonna's desires to had a huge impact on the R&B her voice wasn't powerful enough so, turned to the British club scene, focusing on dub genre thanks to Björk, Massive Attack and Soul II Soul impact, so checked for producer Nellee Hooper and added a certain European sensibility creating the songs "Survival" and "Inside Of Me", Madonna was a huge fan of Björk's "Debut" album and asked Hooper to contacted her to write a track for the album, the Icelandic wasn't a huge fan of Madonna but give a try a created "Let's Get Unconscious" borned out from Björk's criticism of Madonna's aesthetic, and for the final versión became "Bedtime Story".

The album was a blend of pop, R&B, hip-hop and a Madonna record, with lyrics and themes that are "romantic and very reflective". The sequence of the songs is something Madonna paid "particular attention to", as she wanted to create a "truly cohesive" record. The opener "Survival" is a sweetly funky song in which Madonna talks directly to the public and addresses her feelings regarding the controversies in which she was embroiled in the past, "Secret", finds Madonna singing in a husky alto and features an unhurried Memphis soul beat and talks about spirituality and self-empowerment.

In the "soulful sass" of "I'd Rather Be Your Lover", Madonna lusts after the unattainable through processes of negotiation, and runs down the relations she would rather not be: a sister, mother, friend and brother, the fourth song "Don't Stop" has been referred to as Bedtime Stories' sole call to the dance floor with bliks of "Everybody" single from 1982 and achoes back to "Vogue" from 1990, next is "Human Nature" is a hip hop-influenced track that begins is a with heavy bass and drums looping. In "Forbidden Love", the album's seventh track, Madonna "dismisses any relationship untouched by taboo", "Love Tried to Welcome Me" is a song that fetishizes rejection, "Sanctuary" quotes Walt Whitman's poem Vocalism, and it is a song that draws inspiration from Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" (1962), and aligns love and death. The ending of "Sanctuary" is linked to the beginning of the next song, title track "Bedtime Story" that unlike most of the songs on the album, which are heavily R&B-influenced, "Bedtime Story" is an electronica-doused track with a "trippy" vibe. and the closer "Take a Bow" is a midtempo pop ballad with "a "'Sukiyaki'"-like Japanese touch".

Unlike "Erotica", "Bedtime Stories" received generally positive reviews from critics. considered a warm album, with deep, gently pulsating grooves, as well as the singer's most humane and open, she never sounded as emotionally vulnerable or cerebrally plugged in as she does in, considered so far by many as winning" album and more appealing than that on Erotica, perhaps "Bedtime Stories" is Madonna's most underrated and overlooked work, due to it being trapped between her most controversial album "Erotica" and, arguably, her best "Ray of Light",

Rocktrospectiva: El Aclamado Y Exitoso "Like A Prayer" Cumple 35 Años

Madonna Track List:

1. Lucky Star
2. Borderline
3. Burning Up
4. I Know It
5. Holiday
6. Think Of Me

Rocktrospectiva: El Perfecto Y Confesional "Like A Prayer" Cumple 30 Años

Like A Prayer Track List:

2. Express Yourself
3. Love Song
4. Till Death Do Us Apart
5. Promise To Try
6. Cherish
7. Dear Jessie

Rocktrospectiva: El Raro Y Experimental "The Whitey Album" Cumple 30 Años
