Rocktrospectiva: The Album That Changed Metallica's Shape And Sound "Load" Turns 30

Released on 4 June 1996 "Load" was the 6th., studio album by the US heavy metal band Metallica, it was recorded between May 1995 and April 1996 primarily in Sausalito, California, with additional sessions in New York City.  Bob Rock returned as producer, having previously produced their fifth studio album, Metallica, in 1991. Compared to previous albums, the recording sessions were more relaxed and productive, resulting in almost 30 songs being recorded. While a double album was considered, the band decided to split the material into two albums; half appeared on Load, and the other half was released as Reload the following year.

For Load, Metallica strayed away from their thrash metal roots in favor of a hard rock sound. The band members became influenced by non-metal artists during the writing process, resulting in an array of musical styles such as Southern rock, blues rock, country rock, alternative rock, and grunge. The band also changed up their playing styles, with lead guitarist Kirk Hammett playing rhythm guitar parts for the first time. Compared to previous albums, the lyrics on Load are more personal and reflective, resulting from lead singer James Hetfield's internal struggles and personal life. The cover artwork is an abstract painting by artist Andres Serrano, created by mixing blood and semen.

Metallica adopted a new image during the period, which included short hair, leather jackets, and make-up. The new look and change in sound were criticized by many fans before Load's release. Nevertheless, Load was a commercial success, topping the charts in over 15 countries and spending four consecutive weeks at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. Four singles were released: "Until It Sleeps", "Hero of the Day", "Mama Said", and "King Nothing"; the first became Metallica's first and only US Top 10 hit. The band supported the album on the Poor Touring Me tour (1996–1997).

From 1991 to 1993, the band toured to promote Metallica, performing 266 concerts across three concert tours. Another tour followed in mid-1994 to promote the live album Live Shit: Binge & Purge (1993). Throughout early 1994, the band members spent time away from each other: lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield devoted time to hunting; lead guitarist Kirk Hammett studied film, jazz, and Asian arts at San Francisco State University; bassist Jason Newsted created his own recording studio, The Chophouse; and drummer Lars Ulrich took the band's label, Elektra Records, to court in hopes of breaking their contract following a disagreement with the label's new management.

The recording sessions for the new album began on May 1, 1995, at The Plant Studios in Sausalito, California. The sessions reunited Metallica with producer Bob Rock and engineer Randy Staub from Metallica. Despite having clashed during the production of Metallica, the band and Rock had settled their differences in the following years while on tour and decided to work together again. Hetfield explained that Rock "tends to help us dig deeper. We tell him what we're after and he tries to help us achieve that". He credited Rock with helping him deliver stronger vocal performances. The recording atmosphere was productive, and the band's songwriting process became looser and more relaxed compared to previous albums. Hetfield attributed this to the band members taking a break from each other, allowing each member to mature and return with more respect for one another.

Encouraged by Ulrich, Hammett played rhythm guitar for the first time on a Metallica album, having previously only played lead parts while Hetfield played all rhythm parts. Hammett said this was done to achieve "a looser sound". He ultimately became more influential in the songwriting process, sharing co-writing credits with Hetfield and Ulrich on seven of the final album's fourteen tracks. Newsted, on the other hand, felt isolated as his song ideas were dismissed by the other band members, particularly Hetfield. He also believed that the band's fanbase was not "ready to hear [them] sounding like more typical hard rock and roll music". Newsted felt trapped within Metallica and began working on side projects such as IR8. An IR8 demo tape ended up being played on a San Francisco radio station, which angered Hetfield and Ulrich. Newsted nevertheless did not want bad blood between them, acknowledging Metallica as Hetfield and Ulrich's band and a carefree attitude towards songwriting credits, because "I still put my signature on it".

Load is Metallica's longest studio album at 78 minutes and 59 seconds in length, the maximum duration a single CD could be. The long length was marketed by Elektra through advertisements on MTV and stickers affixed to initial pressings of the album itself. The album represented a stylistic departure for Metallica away from their thrash metal roots in favor of a hard rock sound. While the band had already taken a step away from thrash metal on Metallica, they went further on Load, resulting in a "cleaner" sound.

Primarily a hard rock and heavy metal album, Load features a variety of musical influences from genres such as Southern rock, blues rock, country rock, alternative rock, and grunge. Numerous critics have compared the music to 1970s-era hard rock bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Aerosmith, and ZZ Top. Metallica had listed several artists and bands they were inspired by while writing Load and Reload that took them away from their thrash roots, including Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Primus, Pantera, Ted Nugent, Oasis, and Alanis Morissette, among others; the songs "Mama Said" and "Wasting My Hate" were inspired by Hetfield's friendship with Waylon Jennings.

Load was Metallica's first album on which all tracks were down-tuned to E♭ tuning. Hammett said it was his attempt to play like Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Thin Lizzy. Hetfield liked the change, believing the semitone drop in pitch gave his voice a "break". According to McIver, allowing Hammett to play rhythm guitar led to a looser, less "metal" and more "rock" sound, a result of Hetfield's growing maturity and the band's "desire to move forward". The band members also utilized more experimentation in their playing styles. Hammett used slide guitar on "Ain't My Bitch" and various amplifiers to create different textures and soundscapes on "Hero of the Day"; Hetfield used a talk box to perform the guitar solo on "The House Jack Built", and a pedal steel guitar on "Mama Said"; and Newsted played a fretless bass on "Until It Sleeps" and used different amplifier effects to achieve his bass sound on "Thorn Within". Hammett described his guitar solo on "Bleeding Me" as a summation of all his influences, "with a good dose of my own style

Compared to previous albums, which touched on themes of confronting a frightening outside world, the lyrics on Load are more personal and reflective, influenced by topics such as neurosis ("Thorn Within", "Poor Twisted Me") and psychotherapy ("Until It Sleeps"). Hetfield maintained that he wanted the lyrics to be vague to allow for listener interpretation. Nevertheless, the lyrics are amongst the band's most personal yet, "Bleeding Me" was an "intensely personal" song about some of Hetfield's biggest internal struggles. "Mama Said" and "Until It Sleeps" are about the death and relationship, respectively, of Hetfield's mother, while "Hero of the Day" offers "estranged youth" and "mother-and-child" themes. Death and pain are also the main subjects of "The Outlaw Torn". Religion also impacted some of the lyrics, such as on "Thorn Within". "Ronnie" concerns a shooting that occurred in Washington state in 1995. The author Benoît Clerc believes it may have been inspired by the story of Ronnie Long, an African-American man imprisoned in 1976 for a crime he did not commit, who was eventually released in 2020.

Load received mixed to positive reviews from critics. Positive reviews praised the band's performances and welcomed the change in sound. althought longtime fans should get over the change in image and appreciate the band's growth with easily the heaviest record of the year, some other critics felt that the change in style resulted in an album that was less forward-thinking and more conventional, failing to push the band forward creatively compared to past releases.

Rocktrospectiva: The Stone Cold Classic "Master Of Puppets" Turns 40

Released on 3 March 1986, "Master Of Puppets" was the 3rd., album by US heavy metal band Metallica. It was recorded in Copenhagen, Denmark, at Sweet Silence Studios with producer Flemming Rasmussen, it is the band's final album to feature bassist Cliff Burton. While touring in support of Master of Puppets, he died on September 27, 1986, after the band's tour bus was involved in an accident in Dörarp, Sweden. The album spawned the outstanding single "Master Of Puppets".

Metallica's 1983 debut Kill 'Em All laid the foundation for thrash metal with its aggressive musicianship and vitriolic lyrics. The album revitalized the US underground scene, and inspired similar records by contemporaries. The band's second album Ride the Lightning extended the limits of the genre with its more sophisticated songwriting and improved production. The album caught the attention of Elektra Records representative Michael Alago, who signed the group to an eight-album deal in the fall of 1984. Elektra reissued Ride the Lightning on November 19, and the band began touring larger venues and festivals throughout 1985. After parting with manager Jon Zazula, Metallica began working with Cliff Burnstein and Peter Mensch of Q Prime.

Metallica was motivated to make an album that would impress critics and fans, and began writing new material in mid-1985. Lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich were the main songwriters on the album, already titled Master of Puppets. The two developed ideas at a garage in El Cerrito, California, before inviting bassist Cliff Burton and guitarist Kirk Hammett for rehearsals. Hetfield and Ulrich described the songwriting process as starting with "guitar riffs, assembled and reassembled until they start to sound like a song". After that, the band came up with a song title and topic, and Hetfield wrote lyrics to match the title. Master of Puppets is Metallica's first album not to feature songwriting contributions from former lead guitarist Dave Mustaine.

The band was not satisfied with the acoustics of the American studios they considered, and decided to record in Ulrich's native Denmark. Ulrich took drum lessons, and Hammett worked with Joe Satriani to learn how to record more efficiently. Ulrich was in talks with Rush's bassist and vocalist Geddy Lee to produce the album, but the collaboration never materialized because of uncoordinated schedules. Metallica recorded the album with producer Flemming Rasmussen at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen, Denmark, from September 1 to December 27, 1985. The writing of all the songs except "Orion" and "The Thing That Should Not Be" was completed before the band's arrival in Copenhagen. Rasmussen stated that the band brought well-prepared demos of the songs, and only slight changes were made to the compositions in the studio. The recording took longer than the previous album because Metallica had developed a sense of perfectionism and had higher ambitions.

Rasmussen and Metallica did not manage to complete the mixtapes as planned. Instead, the multitrack recordings were sent in January 1986 to Michael Wagener, who finished the album's mixing. The cover was designed by Metallica and Peter Mensch and painted by Don Brautigam. It depicts a cemetery field of white crosses tethered to strings, manipulated by a pair of hands in a blood-red sky. Ulrich explained that the artwork summarized the lyrical content of the album—people being subconsciously manipulated.

Master of Puppets featured dynamic music and thick arrangements. Metallica delivered a more refined approach and performance compared to the previous two albums, with multilayered songs and technical dexterity. This album and its predecessor Ride the Lightning followed a similar track sequencing: both open with an up-tempo song with an acoustic intro, followed by a lengthy title track, and a fourth track with ballad qualities. Although both albums are similarly structured, the musicianship on Master of Puppets is more powerful and epic in scope, with tight rhythms and delicate guitar solos.

The songs explored themes such as control and the abuse of power. The lyrics describe the consequences of alienation, oppression, and feelings of powerlessness. Author Ryan Moore thought the lyrics depicted "ominous yet unnamed forces of power wielding total control over helpless human subjects". The lyrics were considered perceptive and harrowing, and were praised for being honest and socially conscious by writer Brock Helander. The compositions and arrangements benefited from Burton's classical training and understanding of harmony.

The album opened with "Battery" a track that refered to angry violence, as in the term "assault and battery". Some critics contended that the title actually refers to an artillery battery, and interpreted it as "Hetfield singing of a war tactic as the aggressor" personifying destruction. The song began with bass-heavy classical guitars that build upon multitracked layers until they are joined by a sonic wall of distorted electric guitars, "Master Of Puppets" the iconical single featured lyrics from the point of a voice of a personification of addiction and it was about cocaine addiction. The song consisted of several riffs with odd meters and a cleanly picked middle section with melodic solo. The song shared a similar structure with "The Four Horsemen" from the band's first album: two verse-chorus sets lead to a lengthy interlude to another verse-chorus set, the song closes with a fade-out of sinister laughter

"The Thing That Should Not Be" was inspired by the Cthulhu Mythos created by famed horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, with notable direct references to The Shadow over Innsmouth and to Cthulhu himself, who is the subject matter of the song's chorus. It is considered the heaviest track on the album, with the main riff emulating a beast dragging itself into the sea. The Black Sabbath-influenced guitars are down-tuned, creating slow and moody ambience. "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" the song's subject matter was about madness and served as a metaphor for honesty and truth, and it was based on Ken Kesey's novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and conveyed the thoughts of a patient unjustly caged in a mental institution. "Disposable Heroes" is an anti-war song about a young soldier whose fate is controlled by his superiors. With sections performed at 220 beats per minute, it is one of the most intense tracks on the record.

The syncopated riffing of "Leper Messiah" challenged the hypocrisy of the televangelism that emerged in the 1980s. The song describes how people are willingly turned into blind religious followers who mindlessly do whatever they are told. The 136 beats per minute mid-tempo riffing of the verses culminates in a descending chromatic riff in the chorus; it increases to a galloping 184 beats per minute for the middle section that climaxes in a distorted scream of "Lie!". "Orion" was a multipart instrumental highlighting Burton's bass playing. It opens with a fade-in bass section, heavily processed to resemble an orchestra. It continues with mid-tempo riffing, followed by a bass riff at half-tempo. The tempo accelerates during the latter part, and ends with music fading out. Burton arranged the middle section, which features its moody bass line and multipart guitar harmonies.

And finally "Damage, Inc." ranted about senseless violence and reprisal at an unspecified target. It starts with a series of reversed bass chords based on the chorale prelude of Bach's "Come, Sweet Death". The song then jumped into a rapid rhythm with a pedal-point riff in E that Hammett says was influenced by Deep Purple.

Master of Puppets was hailed as a masterpiece by critics outside of the thrash metal audience and cited by some as the genre's greatest album. The band had redefined heavy metal with the technical skill and subtlety showcased on the album, which he described as "the sound of global paranoia". The album was the one that finally put Metallica into the big leagues where they belong". The album became thrash metal's first platinum album and by the early 1990s thrash metal successfully challenged and redefined the mainstream of heavy metal, until now, the album is widely accepted as the genre's most accomplished album, and paved the way for subsequent development.

2. Master Of Puppets
3. The Thing That Should Not Be
4. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)

Rocktrospectiva: The Outstanding "Ride The Lightning" Turns 40

Released on 27 July 1984, "Ride The Lightning" was the second studio album by American band Metallica, recorded in just three weeks under the production of Flemming Rasmussen, the name of the album was taken from a passage in Stephen King's novel The Stand, in which a character uses the phrase to refer to execution by electric chair. The album spawned the single "Creeping Death".

Showcasing the band's musical growth and lyrical sophistication, the bassist Cliff Burton introduced the basics of music theory to the band and had more input in the songwriting, separated from the fast tempos of its debut Kill 'Em All, Metallica broadened its approach by employing acoustic guitars, extended instrumentals, and more complex harmonies.

Peaked at No. 1000 on the Billboard 200 and by November 1987, the album sold half a million of copies. The album released originally on the label Megaforce, and helped to establish trash and heavy metal subgenre defined by its brisk riffs and intense production, the band began composing new music after their promotional tour, although at the time had little money and James Hetfield felt uneasy to perform double duty on vocals and rhythm guitar, gradually built confidence as a lead vocalist and kept his original role, so the band started recording on 1984 in Copenhagen, Denmakr under the production of Flemming Rasmussen.

Four tracks were already arranged, and others such as "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Trapped Under Ice", and "Escape" were written mostly in Copenhagen, and the band put finishing touches on "Fight Fire with Fire", "Ride the Lightning", "Creeping Death", and "The Call of Ktulu". Innitially the band had difficulty recording because gear was stolen three weeks before the band arrived in Copenhagen, so the band slept in the studio by day as they could not afford a hotel and recorded by night because the studio was booked by other artists during the daytime and also because the group was looking for a major label deal, several A&R representatives from different labels visited the studio. At first, it seemed that Metallica was going to sign with Bronze Records, but the deal was canceled, because Bronze executive Gerry Bron did not appreciate the work done at Sweet Silence Studios, and wanted the US edition to be remixed by engineer Eddie Kramer, and even considered re-recording the album in another studio.

The band had to record quickly because of European shows scheduled 29 days after entering the studio. Recording finished on March 14, and Megaforce released the album on July 27. Although the original album budget was $20,000, the final expense was above US$30,000 (equivalent to $91,774 in 2023).  Metallica's European label Music for Nations paid the studio costs because Megaforce owner Jon Zazula could not afford them. Metallica was unhappy with the lack of promotion by Megaforce, and decided to part ways with Zazula. Major label Elektra Records A&R executive Michael Alago noticed Metallica at The Stone gig in San Francisco, and invited Elektra's chairman and the head of promotion to see the August show in New York. The performance at Roseland Ballroom, with Anthrax and Metallica opening for Raven, pleased the Elektra staff, and the band was offered a contract the following morning.

The album exhibits greater musical maturity, with sonically broader songs than its predeccesor which was noted for its one-dimensional sound. This development is partially because of bassist Cliff Burton's knowledge of music theory. He showed Hetfield how to augment core notes with complementary counter-melodies and how basic guitar harmony works, which reflected on the song compositions. Hetfield developed more socially aware lyrics, as well as ominous and semi-philosophical references.Ulrich explained that Metallica opted not to rely strictly on fast tempos as on the previous album, but to explore other musical approaches that sounded powerful and heavy.

Opened with the major-key acoustic introduction "Fight Fire With Fire" displaying and huge evolution towards more harmonically complex style of songwriting, a tremolo-picked riffs in the verses and chorus and extended solo at the end, to cover a song about a nuclear annihilation, "Ride The Lightning" has a suiting for morbid lyrics, emphasized the misery of the criminal justice system from the perpective of a death row inmate anticipating execution by the electric chair, "From Whom The Bell Tolls" begins with a bell tolling followinf by a marching riff and high bass melody, inspired by Ernest Hemingway 1940's novel on the same name explores the horror and dishonor of modern warfare, "Fade To Black" is a power ballad with lyrics about suicide, written by Hetfield in a time in wich he felt powerless after the band's equipment was stolen, with an acoustic introduction then the song becomes heavier and feaster ending with multi-layered guitar solos, "Trapped Under Ice" is about a person who wakes from a cryonic state, realizing there is nowhere to go, and no-one will come to the rescue, the person helplessly awaits impending doom. The song is built on a fast-picked galloping riff, reminiscent of the album's opener, "Escape" was originally titled "The Hammer" and was intended to be released as a single due to its lighter riffs and conventional song structure. The intro features a counterpoint bass melody and a chugging guitar riff that resolves into a standard down-picked riff, according to Heltfield this is his most disliked Metallica song, due to it being the result of the record company forcing Metallica to write something more radio friendly, then "Creeping Death" describes the Plague of the Death of the Firstborn (Exodus 12:29). The lyrics deal with the ten plagues visited on Ancient Egypt; four of them are mentioned throughout the song, as well as the Passover. The title was inspired by a scene from The Ten Commandments while the band was watching the movie at Burton's house and finally "The Call of Ktulu", tentatively titled "When Hell Freezes Over", was inspired by H. P. Lovecraft's book The Shadow over Innsmouth, which was introduced to the rest of the band by Burton. The title was taken from one of Lovecraft's key stories featuring Cthulhu, The Call of Cthulhu, although the original name was modified to "Ktulu" for easier pronunciation. The track begins with a D minor chord progression in the intro, written by Mustaine

The album received a widespread acclaim from music critics, confirmed the band's status as the leading heavy metal and of the modern era, focusing on the album's maturity and musical intelligence that eventually helped Metallica to expand the genre boundaries, a charming and powerful sound at the same time due the band`s rich musical imagination and lyrics that avoided heavy metal cliches.

Rocktrospectiva: El Icónico "...And Justice For All" Cumple 35 Años

...And Justice For All Track List:

1. Blackened
2. ...And Justice For All
3. Eye Of The Beholder
4. One
5. The Shortest Straw

Rocktrospectiva: El Innovador "Kill 'Em All" Cumple 40 Años

El Libro: Metallica "The Black Album, In Black & White

Rocktrospectiva: El Legendario "Black Album" De Metallica Cumple 30 Años

Rocktrospectiva: La Obra Maestra Del Trash Metal "Master Of Puppets" Cumple 35 Años

The Thing That Should Not Be".

Master Of Puppets Track List:

1. Battery
2. Master Of Puppets
3. The THing That Should Not Be
4. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
5. Disposable Heroes
6. Leper Messiah

Rocktrospectiva: El Ambicioso Y Sofisticado "Ride The Lightning" Cumple 35 Años

Ride The Lightning Track List:

1. Fight Fire With Fire
2. Ride The Lightning
3. For Whom The Bell Tolls
4. Fade To Black
5. Trapped Under Ice
6. Escape
7. Creeping Death
