Rocktrospectiva: The Succesful Soundtrack For The Movie "Xanadu" Turns 45

Released on 27 June 1980, "Xanadu Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" was the soundtrack to the 1980 musical film of the same name, featuring the Australian singer Olivia Newton-John and the British group Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). The original LP release featured on side one the songs of Newton-John, and on side two the songs of ELO. In 2008 the soundtrack album was digitally remastered as a bonus CD as part of the film's DVD release titled Xanadu: Magical Musical Edition. The Soundtrack spawned six singles "Magic", "I'm Alive", "Xanadu", "All Over The World", "Suddenly", & "Don't Walk Away". 

Although the film was a critical and commercial disappointment, the soundtrack was a worldwide success and received positive reviews from music critics, earning double platinum certifications in the United States and Canada. The singles "Magic" and "Xanadu" reached number one in the United States and United Kingdom, respectively. "Magic" became Olivia's ninth Number One single in The Netherlands, while "Xanadu" topped the chart in Italy. All in all, the album was the fifth most popular US soundtrack of 1981.The soundtrack featured songs on side one by the film's star, Olivia Newton-John, written by her long-time producer, John Farrar. The songs on side two were written and performed by ELO; the title track which closed side two featured Newton-John as lead vocalist. The Newton-John side also featured Cliff Richard, the Tubes and Gene Kelly.

At the time of the album's release, Olivia Newton-John was signed to MCA Records, while ELO were signed to Jet Records. A compromise was worked out between the two companies in that the album was released on MCA in the US and Canada, and on Jet in the rest of the world. Not every song from the soundtrack was included on the album, with the Newton-John solo, "You Made Me Love You" released only on the B-side of the duet "Suddenly", "Fool Country" released as the b-side of "Magic", and ELO's "Drum Dreams" released on the b-side of both "I'm Alive" and "All Over The World".

In their review, Billboard praised the album. "Newton-John's first soundtrack since the multi-platinum Grease has her romping through a variety of cuts, ranging from the bewitching ballad "Magic" to the rock-inflected title cut, written by Jeff Lynne. Newton-John duets on three of her numbers - ballads with her costar Gene Kelly and one time mentor Cliff Richard and a hot rock number with the Tubes. The other side of the soundtrack is dominated by four ELO tracks, including the hot single "I'm Alive." Since Newton -John and ELO are both coming off top 10 albums -"Totally Hot" and "Discovery" - it's hard to see how this single-disk package can miss."

Other reviews noted that the soundtrack is fluff stuff to be sure, but some pearls float amongst the mire. Lead-off "Magic" remains a fine single. "Suddenly," a duet ONJ ekes out with British luminary Cliff Richard, seems better than most love themes. The second half glows from the Electric Light Orchestra, soaring at its commercial height, escaping this crippling fairy tale fairly untarnished with three more hit bits: "I'm Alive," "All Over the World," and the Olivia Neutron Bomb showcase title track. "Don't Walk Away" and "The Fall" stand as two of Jeff Lynne's finest.

In the end, by listening to this soundtrack may beat watching the actual film and it works in some way, at least for me.

In Memoriam: Ha Muerto La Icónica "Olivia Newton-John" A Los 73 Años

 

 

La Australia Olivia Newton-John cuya voz y belleza conquistaron a todo el mundo, ha muerto a los 73 años el día de hoy, según una publicación hecha por su esposo: La Dama Olivia Newton-John ha muerto pacíficamente en su rancho en el sur de California esta mañana rodeada de su familia y amigos, le pedimos a todos que por favor respeten la privacidad de la familia durante este tiempo muy difícil" fue lo que publicado John Easterling su esposo.

Olivia siempre ha sido un símbolo de altas y bajas, por casi 30 años estuvo luchando contra un cáncer de seno, y por si fuera poco, en Septiembre de 2018, ella reveló que estaba siendo tratada de un cáncer en la espina, con este era ya su tercer diagnostico, tras la aparición de cáncer en sus senos a principios de los 90's y en el 2017.

La cantante de origen Inglés y que luego se mudó muy niña con sus padres a Australia, tras ganar un concurso de cantó en la televisión, llegó a formar una banda de niñas que aparecían en programas de música pop en aquellos lares, su primer single se lanzó en Inglaterra en 1966 y luego logró algunos hits internacionales, aunque desconocida del otro lado del charco hasta 1973, cuando "Let Me Be There" fue un top ten, a eso le siguieron otros hits de corte easy-listening como "I Honestly Love You", "Have You Never Been Mellow" y "Please Mr. Please", pero lo mejor estaba por venir en 1978, cuando protagonizó el musical "Grease", pese a su poca experiencia en la actuación.

Con "Grease" paso al estrellato mundial, ya que el musical se convirtió en uno de los más exitosos de ese año y probablemente el más popular hasta nuestros días, allí encargo a Sandy, una chica dulce de Australia que llegaba a los Estados Unidos a estudiar para terminar conociendo a Danny Zuko, desatandose una historia de amor adolescente en una secundario de los años 50's., la química fue brutal y además los temas del musical fueron directo al No. 1, por si fuera poco, la escena en donde aparece con pantalones de spandex, cigarro en boca y chumpa de cuero se volvió mítica y sigue inspirando disfraces o looks para la ocasión hasta hoy en día. 

Olivia cantó tres temas del musical "You're The One That I Want", "Summer Nights", y "Hopelessly Devoted To You", entonces esto le ayudo a cambiar su imagen por un estilo y look más sexy y atrevido, y así fue para su siguiente disco "Totally Hot",  pero antes, protagonizó otro musical llamado "Xanadu" que es uno de los más infravalorados y que si bien fue un desastre en cuanto a crítica y apenas logro recuperar lo invertido, su soundtrack fue todo lo opuesto, lanzado hits como "Magic", "Xanadu" y otros incluyendo de la banda ELO, en el filme se hizo acompañar de Michael Beck quien venía de hacer "The Warriors" y del gran Gene Kelly en su último papel, luego se vino el hit "Physical" de 1981, uno de los primeros clips en la MTV y que fue prohibido por unas letras sugerentes en su momento, en 1983 se une de nuevo a Travolta por "Two Of A Kind" en una comedía romántica pero no fue lo mismo que "Grease".

 Lanzó otro disco "The Rumour" del cual se lanzó otro buen tema "The Rumour" pero entonces se vino la tragedia, ya que a principios de los 90's le detectan cáncer de seno que la obliga a cancelar presentaciones, en el 2005 su novio, Patrick McDermott desapareció misteriosamente en un viaje de pesca en la cosa de California y nunca más se le volvió a ver, ya en los últimos años tuvo apariciones en shows televisivos, en la serie "Glee" y se aventó un último hit "You Have To Believe".
