New Music: Don't Leave Me Alone

          

Britpop legends Supergrass have announced a 20th anniversary reissue of their 2005-released fifth album, "Road to Rouen," and shared the previously unreleased song, "Don't Leave Me Alone." The reissue is due out October 3 via BMG. The reissue will be released on “Gatefold 2LP Petrol and Forest Green vinyl with printed inner sleeves” and 2-CD digisleeve. Both will include liner notes written by Mark Radcliffe. Mick Quinn had this to say in a press release: "From a lost winter in the French countryside we attempted an experimental, uplifting record far outside our comfort zone. Road to Rouen became a compact joy that still holds a cherished place in our hearts. Vive la différence."

Rocktrospectiva: The Freely And Relaxed "I Should Coco" Turns 30

 

Released on 15 May 1995 "I Should Coco" was the debut studio album by English alternativa band Supergrass, the title of the album is Cockney rhyming slang for "I should think so". The album spawned five singles "Caught By The Fuzz", "Mansize Rooster", "Lose It", "Lenny" & "Alright".

Supergrass were formed in 1993 by Gaz Coombes, Mick Quinn and Danny Goffey, and they released their debut single, "Caught by the Fuzz", in October 1994 on the small independent local label Backbeat Records. Success of the single brought a major label record deal. I Should Coco was recorded in Cornwall and produced by Sam Williams, who had been impressed by the band while scouting in Oxford. 

At the height of the Britpop era, the album became the band's most successful release when it reached number one on the UK Albums Chart. The most successful single released from I Should Coco is "Alright", which peaked at number two on the UK singles chart.  

Between the months of May and August, the band recorded a six track demo at Sawmills Studio and, having signed a deal with Backbeat Records, a limited number of copies of "Caught by the Fuzz" and "Mansize Rooster" were released. The demo had also quickly reached EMI, however, and that led to the group being signed by the Parlophone label, which would re-release the two songs. Quinn said "it took about three and a half months total recording time and cost less to make than the video for Alright.

A recording made at Carfax Tower in Oxford provided the bell chimes heard at the end of "Strange Ones". These chimes were only heard on the I Should Coco version, not on Supergrass Is 10, because on the I Should Coco album the chimes are used as a transition to the next track, "Sitting Up Straight", which was not included in Supergrass Is 10. "Strange Ones" was written about Cowley Road, Oxford, a place where the band once lived. It was originally intended to be the "throwaway song" on the B-side to "Caught by the Fuzz". 

Another song on the album with the same theme, "I'd Like To Know", was inspired by listening to "Strange Ones" played backwards on tape cassette. Supergrass took this sound, wrote new lyrics for it, and had another song for their album. Gaz Coombes says, "One of the highlights of this album was recording 'Sofa (Of My Lethargy)'. ... I remember everybody got in the live room and had an instrument, including Sam [Williams] on bass, a friend of his on Hammond organ and we played the rest, all live, one take. ... We made I Should Coco so fast because we wanted to catch the energy and excitement of the songs on tape, and do it before the money ran out!" In a 2005 interview with BBC Radio London Quinn remembered "writing that song "Time" in my living room on a rainy day and Gaz sort of turned up with this chord sequence and we just went straight through it.

The group's primary musical influences came from bands such as Buzzcocks, The Jam, Madness and The Kinks. So the band Supergrass took this contemporary music and mixed it with pop-punk's characteristic fast, three-chord, guitar-based, catchy tunes to produce a sound uniquely their own; "we were just the three of us in my bedroom or someone's house, just making ... we played really hard and just made loads of noise. Most of our early songs were just three chord grooves and stuff that was fun to play. So that's why the first album sounded so 'punky', I think ... it's just 'cause we were all used to playing in this small room and it being really loud, so we just made the album sound like that."

The musical styles and their particular inspirations for the songs on this album were extremely diverse. For example, there is the cheerful, fast, keyboard-augmented "I'd Like to Know", the guitar-driven punk narrative "Caught by the Fuzz", the mainly piano-based rhythm of the teen anthem "Alright", and the country music-influenced acoustic guitar in "Time to Go". Even in the varied genre of Britpop, I Should Coco was seen as eclectic. Overall, the album has been described as Britpop, influenced in equal parts by Buzzcocks and The Kinks, with strong hints of Supertramp in "She's So Loose", "Lose It" and the intro of "Strange Ones".

"Strange Ones" and "I'd Like to Know" are both songs about the strange people on Cowley Road, Oxford. Mick Quinn tried to describe the concept: "There's a few people who are just really out there. There's a lot of people around Oxford who are real spliffheads and that, who go and lie down in Port Meadow, but I'm not really sure about them. I'm not really sure that they're individuals: they're part of a much larger thing." Danny Goffey added, "They're the sort of people who don't fit in anywhere, who don't link up with everyday life at all." "Caught by the Fuzz" was based on a real-life event: Gaz Coombes's arrest and caution for possession of cannabis aged fifteen. In a 2004 interview, Coombes said "It wasn't trying to be a real statement, but at the time we knew that it was a big deal. Kids all around England were getting nicked for having a bit of hash on them. In Oxford that kind of thing happened quite a lot. It's all true so it was easy to write. It was a funny experience – not too funny at the time 'cause I was only 15 and shitting myself. The song has that disturbing energy. It's comparable to your heart racing. The adrenaline rush you get when your mum walks into the police station is similar to the energy of the song." "Mansize Rooster" is said to be about a young boy with a large penis, although this is not obvious from the lyrics.

I Should Coco reached number one on the UK Albums Chart, critics were fine with the band because they play with the skill and assurance of a band who've been going for decades yet they still burn off the buzz of being new to the game." He added, "There's nothing contrived about I Should Coco, nothing added for effect." Culturally, the album's glorification of teenage freedom made a very big impact on the overall Britpop music scene. The whole genre was seen as the voice of youth, but Supergrass, still teens themselves when the album was made, addressed the subject with more insight than most. The most well-known song from the album, "Alright", is still played regularly in Britain and Ireland, and held up as a musical example of teenage rebellion. Though it is one of their most popular songs, the band rarely play "Alright" in their live sets any more. 

All five singles released in the UK from I Should Coco were well received by the British public.  I Should Coco was nominated for Best Album at the 1995 Mercury Prize awards, and the single "Alright" from the album won an Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song.

Rocktrospectiva: El Formidable "In It For The Money" Cumple 25 Años

 

Lanzado el 21 de Abril de 1997, "In It For The Money" fue el segundo disco de la banda Inglesa, Supergrass, el predecesor del exitoso "I Should Coco" disco que los había dado a conocer y metido a la vagón de las estrellas del brit pop, por lo tanto, la presión era fuerte para la banda que en ese entonces estaba gozando de una amplía cobertura de parte de los medios, así que el título obedece a eso, a una burla de parte de la banda para no tomarse esto tan en serio.

Al final de cuentas, todo salió bien, pudieron con la presión y entregaron un disco formidable con temas complejos que demostraban la habilidad musical de la banda, curiosamente al inicio de las grabaciones, tan solo tenían dos temas, y durante las grabaciones en Sawmills Studio, terminaron de componer el resto de los temas, las grabaciones se vieron interrumpidas por culpa de Danny Goffey, ya que a cada rato interrumpía abruptamente todo para irse a Londres a grabar con su otra banda "Lodger", entonces esto puso a la gerencia del sello en alerta y le advirtieron de su comportamiento, esto esta contado en el tema "Going Out" que fue parte de los singles que se lanzaron, en cuanto a las melodías de los temas, se puede notar mucha influencia de bandas como Small Faces, The Kinks y hasta pinceladas de "Magical Mystery Tour", tomaron diferentes texturas sonoras para adecuarlas a sus grabaciones, esto fue bueno ya que ayudó a convencer a la crítica que no eran una banda suertuda del montón, y es que esas complejidades permitieron que la banda se quitara esa aura de grupo de sugar pop.

Dentro del disco destacamos temas como "Richard III", estidente y retumbante recordando su buena vibra conseguida en su disco debut, "Going Out" es otra chulada con un órgano carnavalesco a manera de narrar los problemas de Goffey, también estaba la radial y jovial "Sun Hits The Sky", no digamos la balada introspectiva "Late In The Day" aderezada con una gran guitarra acústica y con un video que tuvo alta rotación en la MTV2 de aquellos años, probando que la banda había finalmente dado un paso hacía adelante, madurando musicalmente hablando y con buenas perspectivas dejando de manifiesto su buen sonido. 

Esto ayudo a que el disco alcanzará el No. 2 en el Reino Unido llegando a vender más que el debutante "I Should Coco", la crítica lo abrazó así como los oyentes considerándolo un disco de enorme calidad y originalidad musical, y ya con eso, la banda lograba avanzar evitando quedar encasillada en el brit pop que en ese entonces comenzaba a declinar en cuando a su popularidad.

La banda Supergrass nos comparte este tema "It's Not Me" la cual según compartieron, se trata de una versión tempranera que fue grabada en Sawmills Studio hace 25 años, pero que al final de cuentas fue cambiada a una versión acústica que fue laque al final se incluyó en el disco "In It For The Money", el cual estará siendo relanzada en una nueva versión expandida 3CD, 2LP y Digital totalmente remasterizada del disco que incluye lados B, rarezas, tomas en directo entre las cuales viene esta que previamente no habían sido relanzadas.  

Rocktrospectiva: El Inmaduro "I Should Coco" Cumple 25 Años

Lanzado un 15 de mayo de 1995, "I Should Coco" fue el disco debut de la banda Británica Supergrass, formada en 1993 por Gaz Coombes, Mick Quinn, y Danny Goffey quienes habían lanzado previamente el single "Caught By The Fuzz" bajo el pequeño sello "BackBeat".

Por aquel entonces, el brit pop era el movimiento de moda impulsado por los cuatro grandes: Blur, Oasis, Suede y Pulp, lo que no sospechaba Gaz y sus colegas era que teniendo apenas 17 años iba a conseguir un contrato con Parlophone de la mano de Sam Williams que sería su productor, tras una conversación amena en una tienda de discos y sin siquiera haberlos escuchado, decidido darles una oportunidad ya que pensaba que había potencial, y no estaba equivocado, ya que el disco se convertiría a la postre en uno de los más reconocidos del movimiento Británico en aquellos 90's. 

La diferencia que tenía Supergrass con sus contemporaneos más famosos y experimentados, era que simplemente se lanzaron a hacer un disco sin tener temor alguno de llegar a sonar infantiles, y gracias a ese humor y sonido despreocupado, que las audiencias les recuerda, además del sonido fuertemente influenciado por bandas de corte puk como Buzzcocks y The Undertones, de hecho "Lenny" el primer track que grabaron y que sería el cuarto single tiene esa potencia tipica del punk, además de otros como "Caught By The Fuzz" y "Mansize Rooster", y en contraste temas de más lentos como "Time" o "Sofa (Of My Letargy)", la potente "I'd Like To Know" que era el tema que abría el disco en donde el bajo de Quinn le daba fuerza al tema y así llegabamos al final con la balada "Time To Go", de corte acústico, simple y sin pretensiones, el tema le daba la conclusión a un disco concpetual y que cojuntaba un sonidoúnico siguiendo una sola línea, cargados de esa chispa juvenil que les garantizó reconocimiento como músicos y compositores. 

Pero de todo el set, hay un tema que merece mención aparte, "Alright", uno de los himnos britpop por excelencia, y que fue con el que dieron en el blanco, ya que era el típico tema del verano y con un letra que hablada de cuidarse muy bien y luego salir a parrandear y pasarsela a lo grande disfrutando el hecho de ser joven y vivir en uno de los mejores momentos en el Reino Unido, cosa que contrasta con lo que pasa hoy en día, el tema era alegre, vivaz y dinámico y comenzaba con un piano muy divertido y juguetón además del video con los miembros de la banda pasandosela a lo grande y viviendo el día a día muy pero muy despreocupados, y sinceramente este fue el tema del disco que los hizo famosos a nivel mundial, en muchos países este fue el único tema que vino de la banda y por el cual hasta ahora los siguen recordando. 

Con el tiempo, la banda evolucionaría hacía sonidos más oscuros, sin perder la calidad por supuesto pero la chispa y ese sabor juvenil no volvieron más y eso influyó para que su reconocimiento y fama decayera un poco con el pasar de los años, a pesar de todo, la buena vibra dejada en "I Should Coco", en la historia de pop Británico sigue siendo única hasta nuestros días.

Supergrass vuelve al ruedo con "Next To You" un cover de The Police con el toque tipico de la banda lleno de potentes vocalizaciones, estridentes guitarras, y harmonías, es el primer track que se lanza para promocionar una nueva colección de éxitos llamada "The Strange Ones 1994 - 2008" por la celebración del 25 aniversario del disco debut de la banda "I Should Coco" que verá la luz el próximo 24 de enero, una masiva caj con los 6 discos originales en LP, CD, bonus CDs y material inédito, en directo, b-sides, remixes y rarezas junto a un libreto, posters y un botón conmemorativo.

La Reedición: Supergrass La Relanzar Edición 20th. Aniversario De "I Should Coco"

En plena epoca de nostalgía britpopera, ahora llega el turno para Supergrass, aquel trío británico que se diera a conocer entre 1994/1995 gracias al éxito de su contagiosa "Alright", ahora la banda se prepara para la celebración del 20th. aniversario de su disco debut "I Should Coco" para el próximo 4 de septiembre. 

El disco de 1995 viene ahora en dos ediciones: vinilo de 180 gramos y edición deluxe de 3 CD's, ambas incluyen B-sides, demos, y grabaciones en directo a parte del libreto con imágenes inéditas de aquella epoca maravillosa. 

Para Gaz Coomes líder y vocalista de la banda ha dicho lo siguiente: "es genial que esta re-edición de aniversario ya esta tomando forma, hay mucho material, geniales tomas desconocidas, track inéditos y canciones como bono las cuales son parte del disco, y es que todavia sentimos mucho amor y recuerdos por "I Should Coco" añadio". 

Entre el material desconocido para lanzar estara una colección de rarezas y lados-B de aquella era, entre las que se incluyen "Stone Free" la cual recibe su primer lanzamiento digital, ademas de demos caseros que sacamos de los archivos de la banda cuando acaba de firmar para Parlophone.

Sin duda "I Should Coco" fue uno de los discos emblematicos de la era brit-pop y del surgimiento de la Cool Britannia, como se dice, el brit-pop nunca fue una cosa entre Suede, Blur y Oasis, también aparecieron bandas como Supergrass que tuvieron su momento, a pesar que ahorita Gaz Coombes no tiene interes alguno de reunir a la banda pero quien sabe dentro de 5 años todo puede cambiar.
