Rocktrospectiva: The Emotional, Honest And Brutal "Songs From The Big Chair" Turns 40

Released on 25 February 1985 "Songs From The Big Chair" was the second studio album by English band Tears For Fears. A follow-up to the band's successful debut album, The Hurting (1983), Songs from the Big Chair was a significant departure from that album's dark, introspective synth-pop, featuring a more mainstream, guitar-based pop rock sound, sophisticated production values and diverse stylistic influences, while Roland Orzabal and Ian Stanley's lyrics displayed socially and politically conscious themes.

The album peaked at number two in the UK and at number one in the U.S., becoming a multi-platinum seller and the band's most successful studio album to date. Spawning five singles "Mothers Talk", "Shout", "Everybody Wants To Rule The World", "Head Over Heels" & "I Believe"

The singles "Shout" and "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" both topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and reached the top 5 of the UK Singles Chart, while "Head over Heels", "Mothers Talk" and a live version of "I Believe" were also successful internationally.

The album was to be titled The Working Hour, but Roland Orzabal thought to change it to Songs from the Big Chair, a title derived from the 1976 American television film Sybil about a woman with multiple personality disorder who only feels safe when sitting in her analyst's "big chair." The title reflects the band's opinion that they were the targets of a hostile British music press. The band started to generate new material around the beginning of 1984. The first song written for the album was "Head over Heels", which the band played live during a tour undertaken between the two studio albums.

Recorded at The Wool Hall in 1984. Conceptually and musically, it further developed the band's sound from the previous studio album The Hurting (1983), reintroducing guitars to their electronic sound and imparting a lighter approach overall. Early songs written for the album included "Head over Heels" and "The Working Hour". "Mothers Talk" was released months before the album as a single. These songs, as well as "We Are Broken", were all performed on the Tears for Fears 1983 tour. The song "Shout" became a central work during the recording of the album, and the band and producer Chris Hughes spent months working on the track.

The album utilises many styles and influences, and progressive rock was cited as a primary influence on the album. "I Believe" was influenced by the songwriting of Robert Wyatt. "Broken" is a reworking of an earlier song and a live version is repeated at the end of "Head over Heels". The largely instrumental "Listen" has been described as a symphonic piece. Lyrically, the psychological themes on The Hurting were continued and extended to include a variety of themes such as politics, war, money and love.

Near the end of the completion of the album, Roland Orzabal played two simple chords on his acoustic guitar that formed the foundation of the song "Everybody Wants to Rule the World". Although he was initially not interested in working on it, Orzabal was convinced to write a song based on the two chords and he added the chorus line. The song was completed in about a week and was the last track recorded for the album.

The album also heralded a dramatic maturation in the band's music, away from the synth-pop brand  and moving towards a complex, enveloping pop sophistication. The songwriting of Orzabal, Smith, and keyboardist Ian Stanley took a huge leap forward, drawing on reserves of palpable emotion and lovely, protracted melodies that draw just as much on soul and R&B music as they do on immediate pop hooks, almost be called pseudo-conceptual, as each song holds its place and each is integral to the overall tapestry, a single-minded resolve that is easy to overlook when an album is as commercially successful as Songs from the Big Chair.

It was not only a commercial triumph, it was an artistic tour de force. No doubt with the single "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," Tears for Fears perfectly captured the zeitgeist of the mid-'80s while impossibly managing to also create a dreamy, timeless pop classic making the album one of the finest statements of the decade.

The critics called the album a calculated and brilliant peak, a quintessence of polished pop putty ... perfect at its shimmering surface, worthless to its craven core. Compared with the band's debut, this one has been crafted as a new masterpiece with softer, smoky vocals, more tempting melodies and less abrasive rhythms.

Albums: Songs For A Nervous Planet

Released on 25 October "Songs For A Nervous Planet" is the brand new album by Tears For Fears, featuring four new studio tracks and live recordings of the band on tour and at their best of course. The album features the live performances of hit songs like  "Shout", "Head Over Heels", "Everybody Wants To Rule The World", "Mad World" &  more spanning all eras of the band from The Hurting to The Tipping Point and beyond, this is record takes you on the incomparable sonic journey that is a Tears For Fears live show and their career to date.

Obviously a full new material album would be great, but in this case, you got both, classic Tears For Fears music live as four brand new songs, the title of the album was inspired by Matt Haig's book Notes "On A Nervous Planet", which talks about how modern life can feed into our anxiety, subsequently helping you to live a better life.

The new studio tracks fit in effortlessly with a curated smorgasbord of the band's most-loved tunes which were performed live last summer in Franklin, Tennessee as part of their "The Tipping Point" tour and features a number of songs from "The Tipping Point" album itself, another thing, this is the band's first official live album and as one of the best touring bands around, you have to question why it took them so long to release a live album which has been released simultaneously to coincide with a feature film which is out this week. But it’s here and some things are worth waiting for.

Unfortunately, there are certain things the critics quite don't like, the artwork of the album that used elements of AI, the digital collages for the creative process, which actually pays homage to classic Tears For Fears imagery with its blazing yellow sunflowers coupled with the juxtaposition of the new with the graphic of an astronaut which represents one of their latest songs "Astronaut",

The brand new tracks features and intense and enigmatic bassline in "Say Goodbye To Mum And Dad" which still feels uplifting, the gorgeous "The Girl That I Call Home", is the Roland’s love letter to his wife Emily where he tells her ‘You are everything I ever wanted’, the new songs are well-crafted and captivating definitely, the emotional "Astronaut" that sounds like a song taken from the epic "Songs From The Big Chari", with Roland's intense falsetto with expansive psuchedelic crescendos, to cover the story of feeling alienated and you simply have to escape, with a more prog rock and dreamy new wave sound that highlights upon the rest of the new tracks.

About the concert tracks, these are a remainder of the glorious past legacy of the band,  some of the band’s most-loved cuts, such as the superbly-arranged "Everybody Wants To Rule The World", with its climatic bridge and upbeat riff which tells the story of a myriad of contemporary issues that encompass financial, political and environmental issues as evidence, "The Tipping Point" is incredibly moving, telling the story of the ‘tipping point’ between life and death as is ‘No Small Thing’ with its Cash-esque riffs and folky vibe which again demonstrates the heart and soul of the bands lyrics. You have the epic drums and psychedelic-pop beats of "Sowing The Seeds Of Love" where you get a true sense of the power of Roland and Kurt's vocals to the meticulous arrangement of "Shout" from their seminal album "Songs from the Big Chair" which always is mind-blowing on the live stage, this album really spirits you away to the joy of watching Tears for Fears live.

It's nice to see the band is releasing a more uplifting material afther the emotive "The Tipping Point" which was used as a way to channel Roland's artistry and grief after the tragic loss of his first wife who sadly passed away in 2017, in exchange, this album is more positive, celebrating life, love and the band as a way to focus on light.

New Music: Astronaut

Tears For Fears are back with another single "Astronaut" the latest cut from their upcoming live album "Songs For A Nervous Planet", the track features some sublime, reverb-ridden falsetto from Roland Orzabal and takes a majestic, glammy turn in the chorus. "I wanna be an astronaut," Orzabal sings with harmonies surrounding him. According to Curt Smith: "Emotionally it’s about this guy who doesn"t feel he belongs here and wants to be an astronaut floating out into space… a lot of people identify with the emotion of that song, that sense of alienation," the video has been directed by Maschima.

Rocktrospectiva: The Masterpiece "The Seeds Of Love" Turns 35

Released on 25 September 1989, "The Seeds Of Love" was the third studio album by English pop rock band Tears For Fears, the album retained the band's epic sound while incorporating influences ranging from jazz and soul to Beatlesque pop. The album spawned the title hit single "Sowing the Seeds of Love", as well as "Woman in Chains", and "Advice for the Young at Heart", both of which reached the top 40 in several countries, and finally "Famous Last Words".

The album became an international success, entering the UK Albums Chart at number one, and top ten in other countries including the United States, France, Germany, Canada, and the Netherlands. Despite its success, personal tensions during recording led to band members Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal splitting up at the conclusion of their 1990 world tour, with Orzabal remaining as the band's sole official member until the two reunited in the early 2000s.

Created during a profound period of catharsis, in which Curt Smith was going through a divorce while Roland Orzabal was in primal therapy. Musically, it's their most sophisticated outing record, it took four years, four producers, and over a million pounds to complete. The duo sought to distance themselves from the synth pop of their earlier records in favor of a more organic approach using live musicians. Included their very own band Kate St. John, Jon Hassell, Robbie Macintosh, and Ian Stanley. The album's Muse is American vocalist/pianist Oleta Adams. Orzabal caught her set in a hotel bar in 1985 and asked her two years later to duet on the transcendent album-opener "Woman in Chains." It set the tone for the entire proceeding with the glorious drumming on the cut is by Phil Collins.

Adams also contributed gospel vocals to "Bad Man's Song," which features a Holland piano intro strongly suggestive of Weather Report's "Birdland." The production chart-topper for "Sowing the Seeds of Love" borrows heavily from the Beatles' "I Am the Walrus," but ends up as a spiritual, sociopolitical anthem in its own sonic universe. On "Advice for the Young at Heart," Smith's and Holland's vocals entwine in a melody grounded in blue-eyed soul, jazz, and elegant pop that recalls the Style Council.  "Standing on the Corner of the Third World," clearing the way for a melody that melds Bacharach-esque pop to folk, rock, and chamber jazz, with riveting singing from Smith and Orzabal. "Swords and Knives" melds squalling prog rock guitar to Afro-Latin polyrhythms and orchestral arrangements woven through psych-pop overtones. The rave-up rocker "Year of the Knife" is loaded with effects. Its siren-like strings provide ballast for ripping, multi-tracked guitars, samples, atmospherics, punchy drums, and a soul revue chorus and the closer "Famous Last Words" opens with ambient sounds and a lone piano as Orzabal delivers a love song about mortality.

For all these reasons, The Seeds of Love has dated better than either of its predecessors and is inarguably Tears for Fears' masterpiece. The first single from the album, "Sowing the Seeds of Love", was released in August 1989. It became a worldwide hit, peaking at number 5 in the UK, number 2 in the US, and number 1 in Canada. Two other singles from the album, "Woman in Chains" (recorded as a duet with Adams) and "Advice for the Young at Heart" (the only track featuring Smith on lead vocals) reached the Top 40 in UK and internationally. "Famous Last Words" was released as fourth single in mid-1990 by the record company without the band's involvement, though this only peaked at number 83 in the UK.

Critics loved and praised the album considered a radical departure from their earlier productions, astonishing record with a heavy production, a more adult and mature effort that turned the joyful pop simplicity to a rich complexity

The Seeds Of Love Track List:

1. Woman In Chains
2. Badman's Song
3. Sowing The Seeds Of Love
4. Advice For The Young At Heart
5. Standing On The Corner Of The Third World

Elemental Track List:

1. Elemental
2. Cold
3. Break It Down Again
4. Mr. Pessimist
5. Dog's A Best Friend's Dog
6. Fish Out Of Water
7. Gas Giants
8. Power
9. Brian Wilson Said
10. Goodnight Song

Rocktrospectiva: El Influyente "The Hurting" Cumple 40 Años

The Hurting Track List:

1. The Hurting
2. Mad World
3. Pale Shelter
4. Ideas As Opiates
5. Memories Fades
6. Suffering Children
7. Watch Me Bleed

Discos: The Tipping Point

The Tipping Point Track List:

1. No Small Thing
2. The Tipping Point
3. Long, Long, Long Time
4. Break The Man
5. My Demons
6. Rivers Of Mercy
7. Please Be Happy
8. Master Plan
9. End Of Night
10. Stay

Primicia: Break The Man

Primicia: Break The Man

Primicia: No Small Thing

Primicia: The Tipping Point

Rocktrospectiva Tears For Fears

Songs From The Big Chair Track List:

1. Shout
2. The Working Hour
3. Everybody Wants To Rule The World
4. Mother's Talk
5. I belive
6. Broken
7. Head Over Heels
8. Listen

La Recopilación: Tears For Fears Fule The World The Greatest Hits

El próximo mes de noviembre Virgin/EMI lanzará Rule The World: The Greatest Hits, el nuevo recopilatorio del dueto Tears For Fears.

Rule The World: The Greates Hits de Tears For Fears será lanzado el próximo 10 de noviembre de 2017.
