The Compilation: Industry And Seduction: A Thompson Twins Collection

Thompson Twins are to release a new compilation, Industry And Seduction: A Thompson Twins Collection, in October. It's the first "Best Of" to be approved by the band, with Tom Bailey and Alannah Currie selecting the tracklisting and Joe Leeway designing the artwork, with Currie.

In limited edition deluxe 3CD form, the compilation includes 40 songs from all eras of the band, including Bailey and Currie's final albums when they changed their name to Babble before splitting in 1998. 

The first CD – remastered by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road – features 20 of their best-known tracks, while CD2 comprises 20 of their own favourite songs, including the B-sides "Passion Planet" and  "Beach Culture", as well as their cover of Cole Porter's "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" from 1990’s Red, Hot And Blue Aids charity compilation.

Having been released on vinyl for Record Store Day, the third CD is the audio from the 1984 VHS concert film Into The Gap Live, recorded at Del Mar Racetrack in California. However, there is no DVD or Blu-Ray element in the package, with Into The Gap Live remaining a VHS-only release, yet to be reissued in the 41 years since it came out.

Industry And Seduction is also available in single CD and 2LP coloured vinyl editions, which both replicate the 20 songs from CD1 of the 3CD. The package also includes sleevenotes (by this writer), with Bailey and Currie’s full 6,000-word new interviews discussing their whole career in the 3CD set or a 1,500-word cut-down interview in the single CD.

While the band didn’t oversee 1990's Greatest Hits, the new compilation includes a song first released on that hits set, "Roll Over", which is from the original self-produced sessions in Paris for what became Here’s To Future Days, before Nile Rodgers produced the eventually released version of Here’s To Future Days in New York.

Industry And Seduction is notable for not including any songs from 1987's Close To The Bone, while only one song each are included from Set and Babble’s final album, Ether and will be out on 31 October.

The Re-Issue: Thompson Twins's "Into The Gap" 40th Anniversary Edition

 

Talking about "Into The Gap" one of the era-defining album of the 80s by Thompson Twins, is getting its 40th anniversary reissue now, and is the most comprehensive reissue of this album ever, remastered at Abbey Road Studios and compiled with the full blessing of all three band members from the classic line-up.

The album stands as one of the band's most successful albums, emblematic of the synth-pop era's peak. The album features hit singles like ‘Hold Me Now,’ ‘Doctor! Doctor!,’ and ‘You Take Me Up,’ which highlighted the band's knack for creating catchy, synth-driven pop tunes. At the time, Thompson Twins were a leading force in the new wave movement, and the album peaked at number one on the UK Albums Chart and selling over 1 million copies in the US. The album's success was bolstered by the rise of MTV, where the band's visually striking music videos played a crucial role in their global appeal. "Into the Gap" encapsulated the spirit of 1980s pop culture, combining innovative sound with a strong visual identity, making it a defining record of the decade.

Both physical formats feature digitally restored artwork and new liner notes, written by John Earls and features contributions from all three band members. The LP format, on desirable red vinyl, lovingly recreates the original release, complete with fold-out insert; the triple CD format includes 30 bonus tracks, 12 of which are previously unreleased and a 24-page booklet.

"Into The Gap" was the Thompson Twins’ fourth album and their second as a three-piece of Tom Bailey, Alannah Currie and Joe Leeway. Like its predecessor, Quick Step & Side Kick, it was co-produced by the much missed Alex Sadkin.

There are three formats of the 40th anniversary of Into The Gap on offer: a 3CD deluxe with 30 bonus tracks, a red vinyl remaster (album-only) and the SDE-exclusive blu-ray. I’m pleased to say that the blu-ray includes all 30 bonus tracks in stereo (cassette mixes, single edits, B-sides, 12″ mixes) as well as offering the 1984 album in the following streams:

Rocktrospectiva: The Rhytmical And Stronger "Big Trash" Turns 35

 

Released on 26 September 1989, "Big Trash" was the seventh studio album by British pop indie band Thompson Twins, produced by Tom Bailey and Alannah Currie and two track by Steve Lillywhite, the album spawned two singles "Sugar Daddy" & "Bombers In The Sky", the first one reached No. 28 on Billboard Hot 100, and No. 97 on the UK singles charts, the second one was a commercial failure, despite the huge budget the duo enjoyed on the making on this record, the album only managed to reach No. 163 on Billboard 200. 

 

"Big Trash"  was the duo's first release for Warner Brothers. According to Currie in 1989: "Warner Brothers came to us and said "Here's a pile of money, go make the sort of record you really want to make", which is every musician's dream. So we made Big Trash, the album had the collaboration of Debbie Harry, who contributed spoken-word vocals to "Queen of the U.S.A.", recorded by Bailey over a transatlantic telephone connection, it was great fun, it was a new era and we were trying out some new ideas as well as a new way of working. We saw that video and being studio-oriented was the way of the future. 

 

The track "Sugar Daddy" "cheerfully borrows from earlier tunes, while the rest shows remarkable growth and depth, the tracks are short, Alannah Currie's gone easy on the percussion for a change and Tom Bailey has decided to start playing around with his vocal a bit more. This work brings up some superb creations such as "Queen of the USA", "Salvador Dalí's Car" and of course the hit single "Sugar Daddy" a pleasant single, though not as amusing as the observant title track. 

 

The album found Bailey and Currie calling upon guitars again as well as beefier rhythms, with a  great improvement on its predecessor, other cool track are "This Girl’s On Fire" containing enough echoes of the older Twins to satisfy long-term fans, it nonetheless failed to prove distinctive, "Wild" and "Bombers In The Sky" mixed contemporary funk-pop with mainstream rock, echoing INXS similar sound back then, in the case of "Queen Of The USA" the band had a certain Jesus Jones vibes.

 

The critics were mixed, some felt the album was "just a bit too serious" and "an attempt to change their squeaky-clean but catchy pop image by tackling current and controversial issues", others considered the album was a successful attempt to add a stronger rhythmic sensibility to The Thompson Twins' sound, but the album failed to produce any hit bigger than the number 28 "Sugar Daddy," although there were several other strong numbers on the record.

Lanzado el 17 de Febrero de 1984 "Into The Gap" fue el cuarto álbum de estudio de la banda Inglesa Thompson Twins, producido por Alex Sadkin del cual se lanzaron cinco singles "Hold Me Now", "Doctor!, Doctor!", "You Take Me Up", "Sister Of Mercy" e "Into The Gap", y que a pesar de las críticas no tan favorables, el disco llegó al No. 1 en el Reino Unido y No. 10 en los Estados Unidos, de hecho de los cuatro singles que se lanzaron en el Reino Unido, tres llegaron al Top 5 y el cuarto al top 10, esto impulso a la banda a un tour mundial en 1984 que los llevaría a tocar en el afamado Live Aid. 

 

El disco tenía un sonido atmosférico y temperamental que sin embargo logró meterse en el gusto del exigente público Estadounidense quedándose como un clásico del new wave pop, cada track ofrecía un sonido y atmósfera diferente y cimento la presencia del grupo en el top 40 Estadounidense, siendo su balada insignia "Hold Me Now", que pese a los años sigue sonando fresca e inocente como en 1984, pero el disco tenía otros hits como la intensa "You Take Me Up" y la misteriosa y melodramática "Doctor! Doctor!",  pero que decir de la brillante y melancólica "Sister Of Mercy" y la otra igual de intensa "No Peace For The Wicked", dejando ese aire de visionarios que mezclaban letras inteligentes con sensibilidades del este, sin perder su esencia new wave para crear un joya única e inolvidable de los 80's. 

 

Sin embargo, la crítica no fue tan favorable con ellos, ya que lo consideraron un disco vacío y sin sentido, y que había perdido mucho de lo logrado en un inicio con sus discos anteriores, aunque otros lo consideraron como el álbum más kitsch de 1984, con el tiempo, esa crítica se fue sauvizando y es considerado hoy en día como una gema del pop ochentero en donde cada canción difiere de la otra creando un fino panorama del new wave pop único e inolvidable hasta nuestros días.

Rocktrospectiva: El Apreciado "Quick Step And Side Kicks" Cumple 40 Años

Lanzado el 1ero., de Febrero de 1983 "Quick Step And Side Kicks" fue el 3er., álbum de estudio del trío Inglés Thompson Twins, pasaron de siete miembros en los primeros dos discos a tan solo tres pero que fueron los más importantes, aunque en Norteamérica fue conocido como "Side Kicks" y fue tan solo el segundo disco de estudio, del mismo se lanzaron cuatro singles muy pegajosos y recordados en el subconsciente radial "Lies", "Love On Your Side", "We Are Detective" y la bailable "Watching" permitiéndole llegar al No. 2 en el Reino Unido y en Estados Unidos No. 34 en el Billboard 200.

 

Lo notable del disco fue que en esta entrega, la banda finalmente alcanzó su estilo bailable que fue su marca registrada lleno de synth pop, si bien los singles "Lies" y "Love On Your Side" fueron los puntos grandes, hubieron otros tracks notables bien compuestos con una melodía pegajosa que los hizo gemas del synth pop, y que los hizo famosos ya que aquí comenzó la increíble corrida de hit tras hit radiales, aunque por el otro lado, el grupo después de este disco ya no sería igual de divertido, y quizás ahí radique la importancia del disco, ya que tuvieron su perfecto balance combinando fuertes melodías con composiciones bailables llenas de ganchos pegajosos y muy persuasivos, Bailey el vocalista destacó aquí más que nunca y en algunos momentos raya en lo artístico. 

 

Una invitada notable en el disco fue Grace Jones gracias al productor Alex Sadkin, fue en el tema "Watching" en donde ella da sus vocales que no fueron incluidas en el track cuando fue remezclada y lanzada en 1983, la crítica lo abrazó y destacó temas como "Love On Your Side", "Tears", "Love Lies Bleeding" y por supuesto "Lies" que fue como el hit internacional, aunque también estaba "If You Were Here" uno de los tracks más famosos por ser utilizado en varios filmes como "Sixteen Candles", por eso el disco destacaba por tener un sonido funk encantador para cualquier oyente, pero la segunda parte del disco era donde yacían los temas más fuertes e interesantes y que le dieron al disco la fama de ser uno de los mejores ejemplos del funk Británico. 

 

Otro detalle curioso del disco fueron las diferentes versiones y orden de los tracks para los mercados Británico, Canadiense y Estadounidense siendo este último el que llegó a estos lares.

Rocktrospectiva: El Viable Y Comercial "Into The Gap" Cumple 35 Años

Fue el cuarto álbum de estudio del trío Británico de pop/new wave, Thompson Twins y que fue lanzado un 17 de febrero de 1984 bajo el sello Arista para todo el mundo. De la mano del productor Alex Sadkin que ya había trabajado en el anterior disco de la banda, se fueron a Nassau en las Bahamas para grabar en el Compass Point Studios a lo largo de 1983. 

Sadkin dotó a la banda de una combinación de pop, new wave con synth pop que resultarian ser una combinación bastante exitosa para el trío, ya que alcanzó tremendo éxito a nivel mundial, aunque las críticas fueron diversas, para unos fue un concepto bastante interesante y para otros fue un paso atrás de lo que habían logrado con la anterior producción. Para la audiencia fue un gran disco, en su natal Reino Unido llegaron al No. 1 por 3 semanas y al No. 10 en el Billboard, lanzandose cinco singles de los cuales cuatro fueron hits, la archifamosa "Hold Me Now" con un video que gozó de alta rotación en la MTV, luego se vino "Doctor! Doctor!" que también alcanzó buenas posiciones y de nuevo alta rotación en MTV, después "You Take Me Up" que fue un hit más que nada en el Reino Unido, en Estados Unidos fue su lado B "Passion Planet" que se convirtío en éxito en Los Angeles en 1984. 

Finalmente se lanzó la increíble "Sister Of Mercy" que solo fue éxito en el Reino Unido y con un video bastante curioso, y finalmente "The Gap" para algunos países pero no tuvo video, esa dosis fue suficiente para que el disco se conviertiera en un gran lanzamiento para ese 1984 gracias a las cinco millones de copias que vendío y que permitío a la banda embarcarse a un tour mundial. Gracias al éxito y reconocimiento del disco, fueron uno de los actos invitados para el mítico Live Aid de 1985, aunque no para todos fue un disco del cual sentirse orgulloso, algunos críticos lo tacharon de estupido y de palabras sin sentido, vacío y de sentimientos falsos, y cuyo triunfo representaba el éxito de una ambición desnuda por sobre el talento, con el pasar de los años, algunos críticos reconocieron el sonido del disco destacando que cada track del mismo es diferente y le da al oyente un viaje musical intenso, gracias a su visión y sus letras inteligentes que dotaban a su new wave pop de una frescura inusual haciendo del disco uno de las entregas más curiosas y originales de los 80's.

En Guatemala, los Thompson Twins eran conocidos por temas como "Lies" y "Love On Your Side" del disco anterior, y tocaron a muchos con "Hold Me Now" que gozó de amplía rotación en las radios de la época, tan así que no hay semana que no llegue a sonar en alguna radio local, y "Doctor! Doctor!" que no fue tan popular como los anteriores, y fueron los únicos que llegaron, y no sería hasta 1989 con "Sugar Daddy" que volverían a sonar por las radios locales, cosas inusuales que suelen pasar por aquí.
