Albums: Ever The Optimist

The first full-length studio release from Scottish indie pop band Trashcan Sinatras in 10 years features guest appearances by Camera Obscura's Tracyanne Campbell and Scritti Politti's Green Gartside, the album has spawned the singles "The Bitter End", ""Bad Husband", "Ever The Optimist" & "Games For The ZX Spectrum."

Despite their pace slowed more than usual, Trashcan Sinatras finally are back with "Ever the Optimist" which came as a brilliant surprise to those wondering where the band had been since the release of 2016's Wild Pendulum. This is a record made up of songs that touch on adult situations with the group's usual deftness, sometimes coming across almost bitterly melancholic, other times warmly comforting.

The production is far more restrained than in the semi-recent past, with the band letting the songs and performances speak for themselves, basically the songs are mainly based around guitar, bass, and drums with the occasional keyboard. This approach pays off on achingly powerful songs like "A View from Nowhere," it also means that the more uptempo songs have some kick to them like the brilliant "The Associated Funk" which is a propulsive rocker with guitars that sound locked in a to-the-death duel, and the lilting "Melodramatic" has essence that only the accumulation of time can give a song and band.

The album has ballads, fragile ballads, like the sweetly sad "Birds I Couldn't Identify," are also well served by the more stripped-down yet still full arrangements. Along with the excellent songs and performances, the band also pull off a couple of nice collaborations. "Bad Husband" features the dulcet tones of Camera Obscura's Tracyanne Campbell duetting with Reader on a rueful examination of a failed marriage, "Hold on to Today" pairs another ageless wonder, Scritti Politti's Green Gartside, with Reader on a subdued track that's both brutally honest and somehow uplifting.

A main ingredient on the record are guests who are extremely well-chosen, not surprising for a band with touch and experience that always have deserves more. Ever the Optimist is yet another example of their under-the-radar brilliance and will repay the faith of longtime fans like a slot machine spitting out gold coin after gold coin. Thoughtful, well-constructed, and emotionally real guitar pop music doesn't get any better than this.

The album opener "Ever The Optimist" speaks to trying to find brightness as the world around us darkens, but with the gambling metaphor running through the lyrics, it’s clear that the author here recognizes he’s likely beaten but not willing to fold just yet. Next "Games For The ZX Spectrum" has a familiar jangle that delivers the same dopamine hit as a rare sunny day in the band's Scottish home.

"Bad Husband" has a late 70s/early 80s pop feel that reminds of another Scottish outfit; Camera Obscura. And it’s no wonder with Tracyanne Campbell singing along with Frank here. The song showcases the band stamp of blending uplifting music with dark lyrics. While listening, this one may have the unintended effect of causing a few couples to re-assess their relationship’s health. "The Bitter End", was the first single released in February this year, with harmonies that are nothing short of majestic, so easy on the ears that you may forget how difficult it is to pull this off, particularly with a band in their early 60s. Chunky guitars twang and chirp, and melodies just make your mood lift. Frank sings of love and loss.

Other remarkable tracks are "Melodramatic", sounds like a quintessential Trashcan Sinatras track, but there's a curious gem on the record with "The Associated Funk" packing with a big punch, up-tempo and vital. The arrangement is fast-paced for this band, but Frank counters by singing with a measured confidence, elongating phrases rather than filling them with words. "Rome" follows and this one is frankly mind-blowing outstanding sung by John Douglas, the symphonic, film-score-esque arrangement sits like a master’s abstract painting among the famed realists of prior centuries. This band can still surprise, and listeners should welcome such experimentation when it yields such gold. The closer, track "Learning To Love Your Ghost" is a moody piece on the topic of grief. With Frank earnestly sings "What you gonna do but survive?" really touch now with John’s sudden death, this song holds new power. The final elegiac lyrics as the song builds are especially poignant.

In Memoriam: Trashcan Sinatras Songwriter And Guitarist "John Douglas" Has Died

The iconic Scottish songwriter and guitarist John Douglas has died, aged 62. Douglas, a founding member of the indie rock band the Trashcan Sinatras, died on Monday, August 3 following "a brief illness:"  His death comes just days after the Trashcan Sinatras released their latest album, Ever The Optimist, on July 31.

The surviving members of the band, Stephen Douglas, Davy Hughes, Paul Livingston and Francis Reader, paid tribute to their longtime bandmate and friend in a brief but emotional statement:

"We are devastated to inform all of you that we have lost our dear friend and brother John after a brief illness," the band said in a statement. "John died peacefully in the early hours of Monday the 3rd August 2026, surrounded by loved ones, his beautiful voice and songs filling the room."

Douglas had been part of Trashcan Sinatras almost since the group's formation in Irvine, Scotland, in 1986. Joining alongside his brother, drummer Stephen Douglas, and guitarist Paul Livingston later that year, he helped establish the line-up that would remain the creative nucleus of the band for the next four decades.

As rhythm guitarist, vocalist and songwriter, Douglas contributed to every one of the band’s seven studio albums. His melodic guitar work, harmonies and songwriting became integral to the group’s distinctive sound, which blended sophisticated pop melodies with literate lyrics and intricate acoustic arrangements.

Born in Irvine, Douglas was a supporter of the pro-independence movement, appearing in 2025 at a pro-independence event at Oran Mor. "Getting the band back together" was a night to celebrate Scotland's grassroots musical talent, with Douglas taking the stage alongside his wife, folk artist Eddi Reader.

Trashcan Sinatras first attracted international attention after signing with Go! Discs. Their 1990 debut album, Cake, introduced songs including "Obscurity Knocks", "Only Tongue Can Tell" and "Circling the Circumference". The album spent three months on the Billboard 200 in the United States and established the band as a significant presence within the alternative music scene.

The group followed with I've Seen Everything in 1993, featuring  "Hayfever", which gained additional exposure through MTV’s Beavis and Butt-head. Their third album, A Happy Pocket, arrived in 1996 before the band endured major setbacks after Go! Discs was absorbed into Universal. Dropped from the label, the members were forced to sell their Shabby Road recording studio and declare bankruptcy.

Rather than ending the band’s career, those challenges ultimately led to an independent resurgence. The critically acclaimed Weightlifting followed in 2004, leading to renewed touring across North America, Europe, Japan and Australia. Subsequent releases included In the Music in 2009 and Wild Pendulum in 2016 before the lengthy gap that preceded Ever The Optimist.

Released on 31 July 2026, Ever The Optimist featured guest appearances from Tracyanne Campbell of Camera Obscura and Green Gartside of Scritti Politti. The album had been previewed by the singles "The Bitter End", "Bad Husband", "Melodramatic" and "Games for the ZX Spectrum", and represented the band's first new studio album in a decade.

Away from Trashcan Sinatras, Douglas built a respected reputation as a songwriter and collaborator. He wrote "Wild Mountainside" for his future wife, Scottish singer Eddi Reader, who recorded it for her acclaimed 2003 collection Eddi Reader Sings the Songs of Robert Burns. Douglas also wrote "Should I Pray?" and "Prisons" for Reader's 2007 album Peacetime, with both songs later becoming part of the Trashcan Sinatras catalogue. The couple married in 2013.

Following his marriage, Douglas underwent treatment for ulcerative colitis, requiring surgery and an extended recovery. He continued performing and recording in the years that followed, including acoustic tours with the band across North America. In 2024 he released his first solo album, presenting intimate acoustic performances alongside original material outside the Trashcan Sinatras catalogue.

He had more recently taken on an acoustic solo career, often touring the UK and Ireland with his wife Reader and her band.

Douglas leaves behind a catalogue spanning more than 40 years with Trashcan Sinatras, a body of work that earned the Scottish band an enduring international following through its craftsmanship, musicianship and understated approach to guitar-driven pop. His death comes at a moment that should have celebrated the band’s long-awaited return, giving Ever The Optimist an unexpected place as the final chapter in his recording career.

New Music: Melodramatic

Legendary Scottish band Trashcan Sinatras continue the countdown to their first album in a decade with the release of their new single, "Melodramatic" the song upbeat composition is gently charged with a leading bass line and honey-dripping vocal harmonies, blends with searching lyrical themes. Cautiously feeling his way into exploring self-awareness, anxiety and the complex relationship between mind and body, acerbic frontman and lyricist, Francis Reader draws expansive ideas over the intricate sounds of a band celebrating 40 years together this year, displaying their prowess as one of Scot-pop's pioneering collectives. Reader explains: I was trying to write something about hypochondria but, probably because I was looking at the subject too narrowly, it became a song about solipsism; about the ‘mind and body mystery’ in general. It’s destructive to always be looking inward, always worrying about oneself, measuring meds and moods and the effect you’re having on people. Music video captured by Stephanie Gibson and crafted by How It Is Nowadays

New Music: Bad Husband

"Bad Husband" is the latest single from Trashcan Sinatras, taken off their upcoming seventh album Ever The Optimist, due out July 31 via TCS Recordings. Featuring vocals from Camera Obscura's Tracyanne Campbell. Bad Husband” is an upbeat, primary-colored hop that cheerfully contradicts its subject matter, with Campbell’s voice wrapping around Francis Reader’s lead as both protagonists admit their failures with surprising joy. Reader sums it up perfectly: "Never has separation sounded quite so celebratory." The accompanying video, directed by Chris Dooley and shot in Los Angeles, stars real-life married actors Paul F. Tompkins and Janie Haddad Tompkins, whose improvised exchanges blur the line between performance and documentary reality.

New Music: The Bitter End

The beloved Trashcan Sinatras, ever since their four-decade journey began in 1986, and the legendary Scottish five-piece’s persistence with melodic, lyrically driven guitar pop can be heard on their new single "The Bitter End", the band's first new music in four years. A typically taut three minutes of crystal-cut, jangle-imbued anthemism, the single comes as they mark 40 years as a band in 2026. The video has been directed by How It Is Nowadays.

Rocktrospectiva: The Exceptional "Cake" Turns 35

Released on 25 June 1990 "Cake" was the debut studio album by Scottish pop/rock band the Trash Can Sinatras, the album spawned three singles "Obscurity Knocks", "Only Tongue Can Tell" & "Circling The Circumference". The album peaked at No. 74 on the UK Albums Chart. The album was recorded at Shabby Road, the band's studio that was paid for with their record advance.

Considered a pioneers, the Trashcan Sinatras were hailing long time before Travis with their enchanted college-aged anglophiles with their jangly brand of emotive Brit-pop. Unfortunately they've seen as a fluff for fans early in the 90s before the grunge revolution and then criminally ignored by late-'90s post-Nirvana alternative.

Their debut album mixed intricately intertwined guitars, in the spirit of a more charming, less gritty Johnny Marr, with lush strings and sophisticated harmonies. Touchingly clever wordplay propelled by the clean production necessary for such elaborate orchestration that led into a warm and inviting sound.

The band released cool singles like "Obscurity Knocks" and "Only Tongue Will Tell" as well as "Maybe I Should Drive"  these proved to be the tastiest pieces of pure pop pleasure, the bittersweet and laced as on "Thrupenny Tears" and "You Made Me Feel." But regardless of the relative mood, this debut is noticeably devoid of musical missteps. Cake was as filled and digestibled album that meant to be the precursor to early 21st century Brit-pop.

Critics were mixed but praised the album considered it full of  lush, layered guitars that strum and chime and also noted the "sharp-witted lyrics" which are "over-running with inspired metaphores and word-play, with a pristine sound and a certain light brush of cool jazz, loaded with bright splashes of guitar and vocal harmonies, the five-member Scottish group Trash Can Sinatras’ debut album was breezy pop with a backbeat and mercifully little attitude. Despite the band was crafting elegant neo-pop soundscapes from little more than vocal harmonies and chiming semi-acoustic guitar riffs and strums, they could not achieved mainstream success.

Cake Track List:

1. Obscurity Knocks
2. Maybe I Should Drive
3. Thrupenny Tears
4. Even The Odd
5. The Best Man's Fall
6. Circling The Circumference
7. Funny

Cake Track List:

1. Obscurity Knocks
2. Maybe I Should Drive
3. Thrupenny Tears
4. Even The Odd
5. The Best Man's Fall
6. Circling The Circumference
7. Funny
8. Only Tongue Can Tell
9. You Made Me Fell
10. January's Little Joke

Primicia: People
