Released on 4 December 1989 "90" was the second studio album by British electronic music band 808 State, the album features the single "Pacific State" that peaked at No. 10 on the UK singles chart, it was released in the United States as "Utd. State 90".
One of the most representatives band of Manchester's newly-borne rave scene, 808 State, a trio formed in Machester by Martin Price, Graham Massey, & Gerald Simpson, later joined by Andrew Baker and Darren Partington who replaced Simpson when he decided to go solo as A Guy Called Gerald. Taking their name from the Roland TR-808 drum machine and the "state of mind" the members shared, they released their debut album Newbuild in September 1988 and secured commercial success in 1989.
The group's early work influenced the UK's burgeoning acid house scene, and called them one of the most important dance music acts of all time," and noted their influence on subsequent techno, IDM, and alternative dance artists.
Their third album "808:90" became one of the first pure dance albums to enter the UK charts, and marked a key moment in the early days of the rave scene in Britain, combining the rude rave sound with a delicate and elegant sense of structuration, melody, and rhythm, the sound from the album was a powerful and unique subculture destilate for the very first time on an album, the key tracks on the set are "Cubik" for the American issue only, and "Pacific" this late achieved to peaked the top 10 in the UK and even today, still a sentimental hymn for the first rave generation.
The standout single "Pacific 202" with its expansive sax melody still sounds so powerful, relaxed and overhwhelming today, "Cubik" was more danceable and pwoerful on its techno riff and broken rhythms, the album was the key recording that brought house generation, the artistical validation mainstream refused to give until then.
Listed as one of the most influential records on the 1980s, the critics called the album as a thrilling expansion of the possibilities for acid house and the best recording ever produced in the style.
