Rocktrospectiva: The New Romantic's Fine Creation "Visage" Turns 45

Released on 14 November 1980 "Visage" was the debut studio album by the British synth-pop band Visage. It was recorded at Genetic Sound Studios in Reading, Berkshire and released in November 1980.

Visage emerged when party hosts Steve Strange and Rusty Egan were hosting their New Romantic Bowie and Roxy Music inspired nights at Billy’s nightclub in London's Soho. This was a precursor to The Blitz Club, the two would found, as well as The New Romantic cultural movement.

Following Strange's stints in the punk/new wave bands The Moors Murderers and The Photons, and Egan membership in the group The Rich Kids, the pair decided to create their own music to play during their club night. Egan recruited Midge Ure from the Rich Kids to join them, and the trio recorded a demo which included a cover of the Zager and Evans hit "In the Year 2525".

Visage's completed line-up included Ultravox keyboardist Billy Currie and most of the post-punk band Magazine such as guitarist John McGeoch, keyboardist Dave Formula and bassist Barry Adamso

This was a sort of supergroup in reverse, as everyone in the band went onto legendary bands afterward, such as Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Siouxsie and the Banshees, & Ultravox. Adamson however, was only an official member of Visage for the group’s debut single "Tar", performing as a session musician on the rest of the album. "Fade to Grey" was Visage's second single released on the same day as the album. The music video became one of the first videoclips that 10cc’s Kevin Godley and Lol Creme directed.

Appearing with Steve Strange in one version of the video was his friend Julia Fodor, who mimed the French lyrics during the clip. There is another version, however, that featured Strange's friend Perry Lister, known for her performances with the Hot Gossip dance troop on Top of The Pops, and being the girlfriend to Billy Idol. The third single from the album was "Mind of a Toy". The theme of the video was the children’s book Little Lord Fauntleroy, a novel by the English-American writer Frances Hodgson Burnett. The final single and the album’s title track "Visage", includes footage shot at the legendary Blitz nightclub in London’s Covent Garden.

The critics about the album were mixed, althought some commented that certain track such as "Moon over Moscow" and "Blocks on Blocks" were perfect examples of Visage at its best, even thought this album was not the band's best effort, however this records is regarded as the one that best represents the short-lived but always underrated new romantic movement.

In Memoriam: Muere Steve Strange Pionero Del New Romantic

Steve Strange, pionero del movimiento New Romantics, líder de la banda de synthpop Visage, y manager del legendario Blitz Club, ha muerto de un ataque al corazón según anuncio su sello. Tenía apenas 55 años, todo un patojón, pero ya desde hacía algunos años, la estrella del pop galesa venía padeciendo problemas de salud, murío mientras dormía en un hospital en Egipto, lugar donde se encontraba aparentemente gozando de unas vacaciones en el resort de Sharm-el-Sheikh. 

Strange sin duda fue uno de los arquitectos del pop, se metío de lleno en la música tras ver un concierto de los legendarios Sex Pistols en Castle Cinema en Caerphilly en 1976, a partir de ese momento comenzo arreglar conciertos para bandas de punk en su ciudad natal. A la tierna edad de 15 años, Strange se mudo a Londres para trabajar para el manager de los Pistols, Malcolm McClaren antes de pasar a manejar un club llamado Blitz en el Soho de Londres, el cual se convertiría en el punto de mira de un movimiento llamado New Romantic del cual ciertas bandas como Duran Duran, Culture Club y Spandau Ballet fueron las principales antes de alcanzar la fama mundial, ademas  contaba entre sus fans al propio David Bowie. The Blitz y los subsecuentes Blitz Kids que frecuentaban aquel lugar, fueron creciendo de a poco hasta llegar a crear un movimiento en el UK asociado con la moda, imagen y fotografía, lo cual era muy vibrante para la epoca, ahí se podía visualizar a los modistas, periodistas, fotográfos, y músicos que llegarían a ser famosos años más tarde.

Una de las curiosidades del Blitz era que Strange no dejaba entrar a cualquiera que no tuviera el look apto para el club, famoso fue cuando se dio el lujoso de no dejar pasar a Mick Jagger por considerarlo demasiado Rock'n'Roll todo lo contrario con David Bowie quien fue una especie de inspiración para todos estos creativos, el Blitz era el punto del nuevo movimiento de música bailable eletrónica de principios de los 80's, de la misma manera que lo fue The Cavern en los 60's, The Hacienda en Manchester a finales de los 80's y principios de los 90's.

Pero la cosa no quedó allí, en 1978 fundó la banda Visage con su amigo y co-manejador del Blitz, Rusty Egan, logrando lanzar tres discos antes de separarse en 1985, y dos más que lograron grabar cuando la banda se reformó en el 2013, con Visage alcanzaron la fama gracias al famoso tema "Fade To Grey" el cual alcanzó el 8avo., puesto en el UK y los primeros lugares en Alemania y Suiza.

Desgraciadamente Strange también tuvo problemas con las drogas, las cuales se le cruzaron mientras modelaba para Jean Paul Gaultier en Paris en 1985, ahí fue donde tomo por primera vez heroína, y eso le acarrío secuelas, años más tarde también aparecío en las portadas por haber robado un Teletubbie y cosmeticos en Bridgend, Gales. 

Strange había sido hospitalizado el pasado mes de Diciembre en Bridgend, Wales luego de surir una infección broquial y una obstrucción intestinal, al final termino sucumbiendo de un inesperado falló cardíaco. Su agente, Pete Bassett añadío que siempre será recordado por su esfuerzo, y encantador carisma, y que siempre estaba al día de las tendencias, hasta el año pasado contínuo trabajando en un libro de estilos de moda basado en el movimiento New Romantic, e incluso una versión para música de camara de su exito "Fade To Grey".
