Rocktrospectiva: The Acoustic Beautiful Set On "Woodface" Turns 35

Originally released on 1st., July in the UK and on 8th., July in Australia, "Woodface" was the 3rd., studio album by Crowded House. It featured five singles: "Chocolate Cake", "Fall at Your Feet", "It's Only Natural", "Weather with You", and "Four Seasons in One Day". The album was a major hit in Australia and New Zealand as well as giving the band their first top ten hit album in the UK.

During a break from Crowded House following the Canadian leg of the tour in support of their second album, Temple of Low Men, band-leader Neil Finn began recording songs with his older brother and former Split Enz bandmate Tim Finn. These songs were originally intended for a Finn Brothers album. Once these sessions were complete, Neil teamed back up with Nick Seymour and Paul Hester to write and record Crowded House's third album. Capitol Records rejected most of the new Crowded House songs, so Neil asked Tim if the band could use some of the new Finn Brothers songs. Tim agreed, on condition that he would join the band, although he has since indicated he meant this as a joke. Whatever the truth of that claim, the group that returned to the studio included Tim as a full band member. 

The album was titled Woodface and was released in July 1991. The cover was designed by Nick Seymour and Tommy Steele. It was co-produced by Mitchell Froom and Neil Finn, and mixed by Bob Clearmountain. Eight tracks were co-written by Neil and Tim Finn and mainly feature the brothers harmonising on lead vocals, although Neil takes the lead on "Four Seasons in One Day" and Tim sings "All I Ask", which later featured in AIDS awareness commercials in Australia.

Five other tracks were solo compositions by Neil Finn and the remaining two were written by Paul Hester, including "I'm Still Here", a hidden track. Former Beach Boys drummer Ricky Fataar, and member of the Rutles, is credited on three of the Finn Brothers songs, "All I Ask", "There Goes God" and "Weather With You". The addition of Tim Finn and the inclusion of songs originally written for the Finn Brothers project gave the album a more upbeat and optimistic sound compared to its darkly personal predecessor, representing the joy of reunion and the freedom of a collaborative effort. The Finn Brothers were also dually responsible for two memorable, radio-friendly staples courtesy of “It’s Only Natural” and the ridiculously catchy "Weather With You": the latter of which provided the band with their first UK Top 10 hit. Elsewhere, however, Neil self-penned several of Woodface’s perennials, including the affecting "Fall At Your Feet," the edgy, voyeuristic "Whispers And Moans" and the energized, Squeeze-esque "Fame Is."

Instrumentally, Woodface employed more acoustic guitar and less organ than on previous releases by Crowded House. The album also made heavy use of vocal harmonies. The album's style has been characterized as pop rock, drawing comparisons to the works of John Lennon and Paul McCartney and certain critics considered as "the sound of a band embracing the pop mainstream with bravado, while slyly biting the hand that feeds."

When Woodface was eventually released, in July 1991, it wasn’t hard to hear why Neil had been keen to utilize eight of the mooted Finn Brothers songs, as they were among the most melodic, infectious tunes he’d had a hand in to date. Most of them featured the brothers sharing lead vocals, though Neil sang the elegant, melancholic  "Four Seasons In One Day," while Tim took the lead on the filmic.

Curiously, despite presenting a feast of beautifully crafted, airwave-friendly pop, Woodface received mixed reviews from the critics and, surprisingly, stalled at No.83 on the US Billboard 200. However, this blow was cushioned by Crowded House’s burgeoning popularity in Europe, where the album went Top 30 in half a dozen territories and peaked at No.6 in the UK, The album represented the joy of reunion and the freedom of a collaborative effort. The songs were easily their finest to date, combining flawless melodies and the outstanding harmonies of the brothers' perfectly matched voices.

Rocktrospectiva: The Enthusiastic "Intriguer" Turns 15

 

Released on 11 June 2010 "Intriguer" was the sixth studio album by New Zealand rock band Crowded House, it was the band's follow-up to the group's 2007 reunion album Time on Earth. The first single for the album, "Saturday Sun", was released to radio and the video clip released to the internet in April 2010, the other single from the album was "Either Side Of The World". 

Following the release of Crowded House's reunion album Time on Earth, Neil Finn announced that the band would re-enter the studio to record a follow-up album which would feature the current lineup, consisting of Finn on vocals, guitars and piano, fellow founding member Nick Seymour on bass guitar, Mark Hart on guitars and keyboards, and then-newcomer Matt Sherrod on drums. The band performed a small concert in The Leigh Sawmill, north of Auckland, in February 2008 and featured a few songs which were later to be recorded by the band for the next album.

In 2009, the band re-entered the studio and recorded demo tracks of 11 songs, some of which Finn had written during the tour around the previous album. For these recordings, the group enlisted producer Jim Scott for the first time, who then continued to produce the whole album in Finn's studio, Roundhead Studios in Auckland, New Zealand.

The band hired various guest musicians throughout the recording process, including multi-instrumentalist Don McGlashan, Lisa Germano on violin, Jon Brion on vocals and guitars, James Milne on additional vocals, and Finn's wife Sharon and son, Liam Finn contribute backing vocals and guitars, respectively.

Intriguer was as winsome and persuasive as Crowded House had ever been. It kicked into life with its most immediate, exhilarating, and hard-hitting anthem – the bass-heavy, psych-flecked "Saturday Sun" – and also proffered a couple of notable leftfield departures such as the pensive, enigmatic "Archer's Arrows"  and the ambient-streaked "Either Side Of The World."

The sound issued on the record contained numerous examples of the dreamy pop classicism in which Neil Finn had long since excelled. The stand-outs were arguably the majestic "Twice If You're Lucky" and the tremolo guitar-framed "Isolation," though the home straight concluded with a consecutive trio of Finn's most exquisite ballads courtesy of "Even If," "Elephants" and the piano-led "Eyes Grow Heavy."

The album topped the charts in Australia, and went Top 5 in New Zealand and Top 20 in the UK, but it also made a strong showing in a brace of European Top 40s and peaked at a highly respectable No.50 on the US Billboard 200. Moving with the times, Crowded House not only embarked on an extensive world tour in support of Intriguer.

The album was very well received by critics and the public, due that "Finn's durable songcraft never fails to enthrall." other thought the album had to stand or fall on its own merits and if there would be if there would be any justice in the world it will be a bestseller. And that was true, nobody saw it coming and this record would be his best work in nearly two decades?.

New Music: Some Greater Plan (For Claire)

          

Crowded House shares their new single "Some Greater Plan (For Claire) one of the standout tracks of the band's new album "Gravity Stairs", according to Neil Finn, it was written by Neil and brother Tim. They borrowed from their father Richard's war diary, drawing on a memory of a whirlwind Italian romance.The song is also about the healing power of music, singing and joining together, the video starts honoring the memory of Neil's father Richard, directed by Neil Finn and Marc Swadel portrays a vintage story between a girl and soldier starring Lauryn Canny & Elroy Finn.

"The Howl" is the latest new single by Kiwi legends Crowded House, straight out from their brand new album "Gravity Stairs" released today, this is another gorgeous song full of Finn harmonies at their finest, a beatiful creative style, brilliant and melodic masterpiece, the band has no limits here, the concept video was directed by Aidee Walker, showcasing a Princess running away from a werewolf, then the Princess beheaded the werewolf and turns into a Prince and now both are riding together across the New Zealand coastline.

Rocktrospectiva: El Experimental y Variado "Together Alone" Cumple 35 Años

 

Lanzado el 18 de Octubre de 1993 "Together Alone" fue el 4to., álbum de estudio de la banda Neozelandesa-Australiana, Crowded House, fue el disco que tuvo finalmente a Mark Hart como miembro a tiempo completo, grabado por completo en Nueva Zelanda bajo la producción de Youth, del disco se lanzaron seis singles tales como "Distant Sun", "Locked Out","Nails In My Feet", "Fingers Of Love" y "Pineapple Face", de estos singles "Distant Sun" fue un top 10 en Nueva Zelanda y Canadá mientras que "Locked Out" llegó al No. 12 en el Reino Unido y No. 8 en el Modern Rock Charts de la Billboard. 

 

Grabado en un lugar alejado totalmente de todo, en donde al principio la banda se preguntaba donde carajos estaban, pero esta vibra de soledad ayudo a que el disco fuera mucho más experimental y musicalmente variado en comparación de sus discos anteriores, además de la llegada de Mark Hart quien aportó mucho en el sonido del disco, además de que la temática sonora era mucho más compleja, con arreglos de teclados y capas de guitarras más complicadas que anteriormente, incluso hay un coro Maori y hasta unos percusionistas de leños en el track de apertura "Kare Kare" que fue co-escrito por Ngapo Wehi que era parte del Te Waka Huia Cultural Group Choir, quienes también pusieron los coros en los temas "In My Command" y "Catherine Wheels", este último un tema de la época de Split Enz que originalmente se llamaba "The First To Say Gone".

 

El álbum llegó a lo más alto en Nueva Zelanda y No. 2 en Australia, mientras que en el Reino Unido fue No. 4, y quizás el tema más conocido del disco "Locekd Out" ganó fama por ser incluido en el soundtrack del filme "Reality Bites" de 1994, aparte que el disco es el más desafiante y cohesivo en lo que la banda había hecho hasta entonces, un sonido mucho más fuerte que el que lograron en "Woodface" las guitarras son más fuertes acompañado de una producción más densa y un sonido limpio.

 

Acompañado de una portada curiosa cortesía de Nick Seymour, con un carro rojo que contenía a Jesus, una figura dorada y un tercer ocupante de quien solo se ve un brazo, por eso para la crítica, el disco era pegajoso y espiritual, lleno de emociones, y hasta para gente hiperactiva pasando por la estridente "Locked Out" hasta la cálida "Distant Sun" y todo gracias a la gran producción que hizo Youth creando una obra disfrutable para escuchar en todo momento, pese a que el álbum era mucho más experimental y variado que en sus obras anteriores, y eso energizó su estilo sin que eso significará perder el toque pop de Neil Finn en cuanto a las letras.

Rocktrospectiva: El Oscuro Y Complicado "Temple Of Low Men" Cumple 35 Años

Lanzado el 5 de Julio de 1988 "Temple Of Low Men" fue el segundo álbum de estudio de parte de la banda Australiana/Neo-Zelandesa "Crowded House"  grabado entre Melbourne y Los Ángeles y producido por Mitchell Froom, el disco no brilló mucho en el Reino Unido pero si lo hizo en Canadá, Estados Unidos, Australia y Nueva Zelanada, lanzando seis singles "Better Be Home Soon", "When You Come", "Never Be The Same", "Into Tempation", "Sister Madly", & "I Feel Possessed", que le dieron el toque y de hecho fue premiado en los Aria Music Awards de 1989. 

 

La banda estaba bajo presión en especial su cantante y compositor Neil Finn para crear algo digno a su formidable debut, a menudo bromeando de como llamarlo y sugirieron el título "Mediocre Follow-Up" pero al final la espera valió la pena, ya que la banda surgió con un disco más introspectivo que su anterior, añadiendo ciertas texturas de los Beatles en los teclados, y creando baladas acústicas cautivantes como "I Feel Possessed" y la elusiva e infiel "Into Temptarion", aun con tones superficiales como lo era "Killeye" o la precavida "Mansion In The Slums" sugiriendo que la banda ya había logrado algo notable, había otros temas casi perfectos como la efervescente "When You Come" y la cautivante con sabor a country "Better Be Home Soon", destacando también la balada con pinceladas de jazz "Sister Madly".

 

Estos temas fueron los que le dieron el toque al álbum que marchó seguro hacía el top 40 en los Estados Unidos y en otros países alcanzó el top 10, esto sería el punto de partida para lo el siguiente 3er., álbum "Woodface" aunque la banda tendría que pasar por una serie de problemas para alcanzar la gloria con ese disco, la crítica fue entusiasta frente al disco que logró tener un buen reconocimiento que impulso una gira para su promoción, aunque después de esta sería Nick Seymour el despedido aunque volvería después la banda. 

 

El disco fue un gran cambio en cuanto al anterior, dieron un salto de calidad que no se esperaba, un disco oscuro, difícil lleno de emociones y psique con un detalle, el de crear canciones intensamente personales, demostrando la destreza de Finn para revelar su oído melódico, y pese a que por estos lares ni siquiera se notó, el disco con el tiempo ha sido considerado uno de los preferidos del público.

Rocktrospectiva: El Brillante Debut De Crowded House Cumple 35 Años

Lanzado en algunos lugares en Junio, mientras que por estos lares fue lanzado un 4 de Agosto de 1986, "Crowded Housed" el debut homónimo de la banda Austro-NeoZelandesa, fue la apuesta tras la separación de Split Enz en 1984 quedando a la deriva Neil Finn y Paul Hester, ellos deciden formar una banda y se les une Nick Seymour, entonces forman una agrupación llamada "The Mullanes", que no duraría mucho pero tras las grabaciones de este disco en Los Angeles, la banda terminó adoptando el nombre en honor a un apartamento muy pequeño que les dieron para vivir. 

 

Del disco bajo la producción de Mitchell Froom, se lnzaron varios singles, destacando la icónica "Don't Dream It's Over", "Something So Strong", "Mean To Me", "World Where You Live" y "Now We're Getting Somewhere", y ya con el álbum listo originalmente con diez temas fue lanzado en el Down Under, pero cuando llegó el turno de lanzarlo a todo el mundo, se volvió a grabar " I Walk Away" y reorganizar el track list eliminando el tema "Can't Carry On", reorganizando el track list ahora si con " I Walk Away".

 

Al disco le tomo tiempo alcanzar el éxito no fue inmediato, de hecho ya habían lanzado algunos temas y en cuanto a "Don't Dream It's Over" este ya se había lanzado sin mucho éxito, entonces el manager decidió jugársela pagandole a promotores independientes para que tocarán el tema en Diciembre de 1986, surtiendo efecto, ya que el tema ganó rotación en la MTV y comenzó a escalar en los charts llegando al No. 2 del Billboard, no digamos la otra movida como lo fue "Something So Strong" que llegó al No. 7 del Billboard, y ahora sí ya tenían sentido los primeros tres singles que se dieron a conocer del disco, ya todo lo demás es historia y aún hoy en día, el disco sigue sonando tan bien por su sonido elegante que fue la clave del mismo, y que permitiría el interés del nuevo disco de la banda que no se lanzaría hasta finales de los 00's y que hoy 35 años después sigue sonando único y es de los más recordados de los 80's.

Rocktrospectiva: El Cambiante "Woodface" Cumple Treinta Años

Lanzado el 10 de Julio de 1991 en los Estados Unidos, "Woodface" fue el 3er., álbum de estudio en la carrera de la banda Austro-Neo Zelandesa Crowded House, del cual se lanzaron cinco singles como "Chocolate Cake, "Fall At Your Feet", It's Only Natural", "Weather With You", y "Four Seasons In One Day", curiosamente del disco no se esperaba gran cosa pero resulto siendo un hit mayor en el Down Under y en el Reino Unido llegó al top ten. 

 

Según cuenta la historia oficial, Capitol Records rechazó el trabajo inicial del disco, por lo que Neil Finn decidió trabajar en material para un filme en el que había estado practicando re-incorporando a su hermano, cosa que no se repetía desde Split Enz, esto supuso un cambio en el sonido, ya que adoptaron una postura mucho más acústica, menos uso del órgano, y la adaptación de una producción más elaborada terminó por cambiarles el sonido tradicional, el título "Woodface" vio como los tracks habían sido escritos por Neil Finn, Pual Hester y otros junto a su hermano, eso hizo que el sonido fuera más optimista contrastando con su anterior disco que era más obscuro y personal. 

Entre los inesperados hits destacaban "Weather With You", dotado de preciosas harmonías y una fina guitarra acústica, le dieron lo necesario para llevarlo a lo más lejos, otro destacado era la balada romántica "It's Only Natural", la curiosa e inquietante "Four Seasons In One Day", o la sombría "Fall At Your Feet", que contrastaban con la débil "Chocolate Cake" que no tenía fuerza suficiente para single pero se usó y fue un desastre sin embargo los otros temas ayudaron a establecer a la banda en el Reino Unido como uno de los más vendedores y con llenos en Wembley aquel 1991, de hecho este disco es uno de los más recordados demostrando que la banda no solo fue "Don't Dream It's Over" por ejemplo.

Primicia: Playing With Fire

         

La banda Neozelandesa Crowded House esta de vuelta con este gran tema "Playing With Fire", track que se desprende de su producción "Dreamers Are Waiting" que será lanzado el próximo 4 de Junio,  el track se compuso durante unas improvisaciones en el estudio durante el confinamiento del 2020, y trata sobre la contradicción de las cosas, cuando uno se siente contento en algunas ocasiones con la presencia de la esperanza junta aunque con cierto sentido de desastre, el clip fue dirigido por Simon Mark Brown.

Previo a la pandemia, Neil Finn se la pasaba de gira como miembro de Fleetwood Mac, pero a partir de principios del 2020, decidío resucitar a Crowded House, ya nos compatieron el primer single y ahora se viene "To The Island" el siguiente corte que se extrae del disco "Dreamers Are Waiting" que hace cuatro días anuncío que saldría al mercado en Junio, sigue la gracia y la calidad del sonido de la banda, y ya tienen planeado tocar para audiencias en Nueva Zelanda donde las restricciones han mermado por el control de la pandemia, pero esperan pronto poder hacerlo a todo el mundo.

El primer clip y canción de la legendaria banda Crowded House en casi una década, fieles a su estilo y con un curioso video a cargo de Nina Ljeti el cual se desprende de su nuevo disco hómonimo "Whatever You Want" la banda incluso ya anuncío una gira para el 2021 en el mes de Marzo en su natal Nueva Zelanda, claro esta si el COVID-19 lo permite.
