News: The Mercury Prize Nominees For 2025 Shortlist Revealed

After more than 30 years, the Mercury Prize will take place outside London for the first time this year - at Newcastle's Utilita Arena on 16 October.

This is a huge year for the event, which will take place outside London for the first time after more than 30 years - at Newcastle's Utilita Arena on 16 October. Last year, it was noted by winners English Teacher that they were the first act from outside London to pick up the prize in 10 years.

This year's nominees include artists from Leeds, Sheffield, Gloucestershire, Coventry and Kent, as well as the capital, and more acts from, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

Ahead of the show, a week-long fringe festival will take place across Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Durham and Northumberland to spotlight the North East's music scene.

One of the biggest stars to emerge from that scene in recent years is of course Sam Fender, from North Shields. The indie-rock singer-songwriter was first nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2022, for his second album, Seventeen Going Under, and returns to the shortlist this year with his third chart-topper, People Watching. Pulp also shortlisted for their big comeback, and Wolf Alice breaking a record.

Other acts announced by judges today include the genre-bending FKA Twigs, indie-pop star CMAT and post-punk band Fontaines DC, who are all up for the award for the second time. Folk musician Martin Carthy is now believed to be the oldest ever nominee at 84 - and joins his daughter, Eliza Carthy, and late wife Norma Waterson, on the list of Mercury Prize shortlist alumni.

Other first-timers include Jacob Alon and Joe Webb, who are both nominated for debuts, as well as Emma-Jean Thackray, Pa Salieu and PinkPantheress.

Previous Mercury winners Pulp and Wolf Alice are both nominated for the fourth time. For Wolf Alice, who first made the cut with their debut My Love Is Cool in 2015 and won with their second album Visions Of A Life in 2018 before a third nod for Blue Weekend in 2021, this latest recognition for The Clearing means that every single one of the four albums they have ever released has been in the running.

Pulp were first nominated for their fourth album His'n'Hers in 1994 and won with Different Class, one of the most famous albums of the Britpop era, in 1996. A nomination for This Is Hardcore followed in 1998 - and now More, their first album in more than 20 years, has earned them a nod once again.

And CMAT returns for the second year in a row, after being nominated for her second album, Crazymad, For Me, in 2024, and now Euro-Country.

The Mercury Prize launched in 1992, when Simply Red's Stars, U2's Achtung Baby, and The Jesus And Mary Chain's Honey's Dead were among the nominees - and Primal Scream's Screamadelica took the inaugural award.

It celebrates music by British and Irish acts and spans a huge range of different musical genres and artists throughout all stages of their careers, from newcomers to veterans.

Rocktrospectiva: The Powerful And Effective "A Hero's Death" Turns 5

Released on 31 July 2020 "A Hero's Death" was the second studio album by Irish post-punk band Fontaines D.C., the album received critical acclaim upon its release, signifying a partial departure from their bubbling and anxiety-inducing post-punk sound found on their first record to the incorporation of more dream-like and psychedelic aspects having taken inspiration from The Beach Boys, to name but one of many influences, during the writing of the record. The album spawned four singles "A Hero's Death", "I Don't Belong", "Televised Mind" & "A Lucid Dream".

Following the release of Dogrel, Fontaines D.C. embarked on a spring 2019 tour with British punk rock band IDLES. During the tour, the band wrote and recorded material for their second studio album. The album is produced by Dan Carey, who produced their debut album, Dogrel.

According to lead singer Grian Chatten, the album's name was inspired by a line in a play by Irish writer Brendan Behan. Chatten said the album title is "an effort to balance sincerity and insincerity, but more broadly it's about the battle between happiness and depression, and the trust issues that can form tied to both of those feelings". The album cover features a statue of the Irish mythological demigod Cú Chulainn entitled "The Dying Cuchulain" by Oliver Sheppard.

According to the band's press release of the new album, the sound ventures away from their post-punk sound. The band said that bands such as Suicide, The Beach Boys, Beach House, These Immortal Souls, The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Broadcast were influential in the sound of the album.

Critics were fairly good describing the album as a maudlin and manic triumph, a horror movie shot as comedy, equal parts future-shocked and handcuffed to history, cause the band managed to delivered a difficult but powerful second album full of songwriting that stares life in the face, althought other critices complained about the record due a lack of a cohesive element and powerful singles, nevertheless the record managed to reach the top of the UK album charts in its debut week, and debuted on No. 1 in Scotland and No. 2 in their native Ireland.

A Hero's Death Track List:

1. I Don't Belong
2. Love Is The Main Thing
3. Televised Mind
4. A Lucid Dream
5. You Said
6. Oh Such A Spring
7. A Hero's Death
8. Living In America

New Music: Before You I Just Forget

Irish five-piece Fontaines D.C. have released a new song "Before You I Just Forget." It is part of the deluxe edition of their 2024 album, Romance, The deluxe edition also includes “It's Amazing to Be Young,” which the band shared in February  There’s also a stripped back version of the album's "Starburster" and melds into a cover of David Lynch's "In Heaven (Lady In The Radiator Song)," from the soundtrack of Lynch's 1977 film Eraserhead. In a press release, the band's Conor Curley had this to say about the new single, which was produced by James Ford: "Before You I Just Forget" is a song that started with a vision of this really blown out sound, something that heaved and shifted with new details, becoming apparent every time you would listen. Like never being able to step in the same river twice, the song morphs and changes.

"Here’s The Thing," the latest single from Fontaines D.C. straight from their upcoming new album "Romance", the track follows the crunchy, grungy rock tune, according to lead singer Grian Chatten: the band continues to evolve in seriously intriguing ways. It’s an anxious tune that twists and turns in what it wants, back and forth between pain and numbness. Discos: Skinty Fia
