Rocktrospectiva: The Serious And Succesful "Flesh & Blood" Turns 35

Released on 21 July 1990 "Flesh & Blood" was the third studio album by US glam metal band Poison, the album peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and spawned five singles "Unskinny Bop", "Something To Believe In", "Ride The Wind", "Life Goes On", & "(Flesh & Blood) Sacrifice)". 

The front cover art features the Poison logo and album title as a tattoo on drummer Rikki Rockett's arm. The cover was originally planned to have a slightly different version of the tattoo after being freshly inked, with inflamed red skin with dripping ink or blood. 

Parts of the album are darker and more serious, including overcoming hard times, missing loved ones, long-term relationships, and mass sociopolitical disillusionment. Fun topics include sex, exhilaration from music or motorbikes, and tongue-in-cheek poverty. Some songs have a blues rock style. The meaning of the album's lead single "Unskinny Bop", one of the band's most popular songs, is obscure. DeVille later confessed that the phrase "unskinny bop" has no particular meaning. He devised it as a temporary measure while writing the song, before vocalist Bret Michaels had begun working on the lyrics. The phrase was used on the basis that it was phonetically suited to the music. The song was later played to producer Fairbairn, who stated that although he did not know what an "unskinny bop" was, the phrase was perfect.

Poison lacked respect from music critics who damned their music as "hard-rock candy", and characterized the "harder and more realistic" Flesh & Blood as an attempt to address this, balancing more typical hard rock topics like liberation and sex with more thoughtful subjects. Despite finding "lots to respect" and smile at on the album, they bemoaned that by "taking life more seriously, Poison is taking itself more seriously, too", as per the record's studio chatter, guitar fragments and answer machine messages, and believed the band "plays eagerly but not very well". Poison was the band everyone loves to hate, especially the trash and death metal fans at the time cause they thought the band just making music for girls.

By the time in the late 80's and early 90s, Poison's musical proposal began to change toward a hard glam metal in the line of Aerosmith, Mötley Crüe and Kiss, this was because the music was dominating by a certain Guns N' Roses band, so many glam bands adopted that sound and look-a-like, you can noticed that on "Flesh & Blood" the band just got rid of the pink wigs, make up and colourful wardrobe to embrace leather, rip denim, boots and cowboy hats, in order to notice their new sound will be serious now. 

 

The music become serious too, well...not really you have certaint tracks such as "Unskinny Bop" and "Flesh & Blood) Sacrifice", that retained their funny side of their first two albums, another tracks talks about riding your bike "Let It Play" and the catchy "Ride The Wind" evocating that freedom spirit of the moment, but then you have a full pack of serious tracks such as "Valley of Lost Souls", "Life Loves A Tragedy", "Something to Believe In" and "Come Hell or High Water". The band wanted to be respected so they're looking for real and serious emotions, well...remember the 90s arrived and the music scene is about to change, but it's was not about the music, the lyrics had another level, and a more mature style, think about the nostalgic and pain reliever in "Something To Believe In". 

 

Even thought the album success was in huge part due the astonishing single "Unskinny Bop", but in general, the album goes beyod that, they don't necessarily forget their business but you can't notice that serious change into a rock and roll music with less disto-verses on "Don't Give Up An Inch" for instance, and what about the instrumental "Swampjuice (Soul-O)", the blues sound on "Ball And Chain" and the properly final track "Poor Boy Blues" with a savaged harmonica marking a new horizon, well it would be the same path the band will take with their next and failed record. 

Don't forget the power ballads "Life Goes On" and "Something To Believe In" their most powerful touching tracks, nothing rare with the band, remember Michaels voice knew how to touch the mainstream heart and just added C.C. DeVille guitar and you have the hit. 

"Flesh & Blood" was the last huge success for Poison, then the tide changed and they would be a part of all those hard rock band that suddenly began to sound outdated due grunge and alternative music, also the the terrible relation between Michaels and DeVille seriously affected the band, cause they adopted a brand new guitar man, Ritchie Kotzen and with him, the sound would be more bluesy and less hard, a good artistical result but lack of success, althought DeVille come back years later, the band never achieved the same successful scale, despite of that, this album reamins as a pure testimony of their golden era.

Rocktrospectiva: El Exitoso "Open Up And Say...Ahh" Cumple 35 Años

Lanzado el 3 de Mayo de 1988, "Open Up And Say...Ahh" fue el segundo álbum d estudio de la banda Estadounidense Poison, considerado su álbum más exitoso a la fecha, lanzando cuatro hit singles "Nothin' But A Good Time", "Fallen Angel", Your Mama Don't Dance" que era un cover y la power ballad por excelencia "Every Rose has Its Thorn", que ayudaron al disco a llegar al No. 2 en el Billboard 200.

 

Bajo la producción de Tom Werman famoso por sus trabajos con Ted Nugent, Cheap Trick, Twisted Sister y Mötley Crüe , aprovecharon la fuerza del momento que era el glam rock para entregar uno de los discos claves del género en donde se lanzaban temas fuertes y luego la power ballad que fue lo que marcó al género y lo terminaría acabando después, el primer single "Nothin' But A Good Time", surgió de un riff del guitarrista C.C. DeVille., y un coro de Michaels, buscaban un sólido hit para tocarlo en arenas y que llenara de ánimos a todos, el tema hablaba sobre no estar atado un trabajo aburrido y sentirse deprimido, misma temática siguieron con "Fallen Angel" que era sobre una aspirante a modelo y actriz, mientras que "Your Mama Don't Dance" un cover del tema de Loggins y Messina de 1972 y que la banda le adaptó su sonido también destacó dentro del disco, pero la más famosa canción fue sin duda la power ballad "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" que llegó al No. 1 y que se dice fue en respuesta a un amorío fallido que Michaels tuvo con una stripper en Los Ángeles, fue compuesta en una lavandería con su guitarra acústica y fue el tema por excelencia del grupo.

 

El resto de los temas deambulaban sobre temáticas sexuales, pasarla bien y siempre enfiestados, y pese a que la banda venia de ser un grupo desconocido, la rotación que tuvieron en la MTV los ayudo para volverse famosos de la noche a la mañana, y que por poco no desbancaron al "New Jersey" del No. 1., eso cimento la fuerza de la banda que lanzaría otros cinco discos más en los siguientes 15 años, pero tras la salida de C.C. deVille por sus abusos de droga, perderían la esencia de su sonido aparte de que el grunge dejó muy mal parado al glam rock a partir de 1991. 

 

El disco sigue siendo el favorito de las audiencias quienes agradecen a la banda por haberlo lanzado y mantener la quintaesencia del sonido y espiritu del glam rock.

Rocktrospectiva: El Recordado Y Exitoso "Flesh & Blood" Cumple 30 Años

Lanzado un 21de Junio de 1990 bajo el Sello Enigma, subsidiaria de Capitol Records, "Flesh & Blood" 3er., disco de la banda Estadounidense de glam metal, Poison, llegó a vender cerca de 7.2 millones de copias y lanzó dos top ten, "Unskinny Bop" y la power ballad "Something To Believe In", y por supuesto otros temas con éxito a nivel radial como las recordadas "Ride The Wind", "Life Goes On" y "(Flesh & Blood) Sacrifice", por lo que el disco fue un gran éxito para la banda, tanto así que nunca volvieron a tener uno así, en gran parte porque entró el grunge y el sonido alternativo a cambiar el panorama. 

El disco fue producido por Bruce Fairbairn, y el contenido variaba de temas oscuros, situaciones serias tocando temas profundos como en canciones tales como"Valley of Lost Souls", "Life Loves A Tragedy", "Come Hell Or High Water", la perdida de seres queridos en "Life Goes On", relaciones largas que comienzan a pasar factura en  "Don’t Give Up an Inch" y "Ball and Chain", y por supuesto la desilusión y el razonamiento por la vida como en "Something to Believe In", sin dejar la fregadera y desquicio sexual que eran lo que podías percibir en los temas como  "(Flesh & Blood) Sacrifice", "Unskinny Bop", y el llamado de la libertad a bordo de las motocicletas como "Let It Play" y "Ride the Wind".

En su época, a Poison no se le tenía estima, muchos menos respeto musical, cosa que me parece injusto ya que sus integrantes sabían tocar, el sonido de C.C. deVille era brillante, pero desgraciadamente su música era asociadas solo para el gusto de las chicas y por eso los fanáticos como por ejemplo de bandas como Metallica o Antrax los odiaban y criticaban, si vamos hablar de letras facilonas y sin profundidad, pues ahí tenemos a Bon Jovi, incluso Kiss, pero por razones obvias Poison fue el blanco, aunque por ese entonces todos se parecían y hasta se vestían igual, el problema como hemos dicho siempre, es eso, que cuando una propuesta pega, todos se meten al tren para llevarse su tajada, y con el glam metal eso paso, como decían, el chiste era sacar un tema medio fuerte y luego se pasaba a la balada y al final venían los temas pesados.

Y por supuesto, Poison hizo lo mismo, y mientras duró la fama del género, asi fue como funcionaron sus discos, que la verdad no son malos y han dejado muy buenos temas para la posteridad, como decía anteriormente, tuvo que venir el grunge y las propuestas alternativas que ya comenzaban a sonar a mediados de los 80's para cambiar el panorama musical. Poison destacaba por ese sonido y por su indumentaria androgena, bien maquilladitos que parecían chicas, aunque también Enuff Z Nuff se miraban igual, pero evolucionaron y para finales de los 80's y principios de los 90's tiraron el look andrógeno por una propuesta más seria, tipo Guns'N' Roses en el look y en el estilo, y se puede apreciar en el sonido más metalero, volviéndose más serios.

Y eso es lo que se puede apreciar en este disco, madurez y seriedad, fuerza y sensibilidad a la vez, ya no los temas de fregadera y borracheras, el talento se mantuvo, y por eso la crítica y el pensamiento hacía la banda cambio, aunque en mi caso, me gustaba su música desde el primer disco, pero aquí se nota el buen trabajo en cuanto a producción y la manera de impulsar a la banda a explorar con estilos como el blues, un rock más crudo, tal y como se escuchó en el último track y que fue la tendencia a seguir en lo que sería su siguiente disco, mucho más serio, tan serio que no llamo la atención debida, pero era porque ya los tiempos habían cambiado.

Las diferencias entre Michaels y DeVille comenzaron aflorar más, aquel incidente en los VMAs del 91 donde el último estaba borracho y arruinó la presentación de la banda, llevaron a sacarlo y reemplazarlo con otro y entonces poco a poco se fue perdiendo la mística y la esencia del grupo, y pese a que volverían después ya no sería más lo mismo, pero sin duda "Flesh & Blood" es fiel testimonio de una bonita época, plasmando su calidad y talento para la posteridad. En Guatemala, el disco se vendió muy bien, y tuvieron su momento, eran muy conocidos por estos lares, y los principales temas con excepción de "(Flesh & Blood) Sacrifice" sonaron muy bien, programas como Rock Tracks o Revolución Rock era fiel testigo de su calidad, no digamos cuando apareció la balada "Something To Believe In", en cuanto al disco, este lo termine comprando por unos Q20 a un compañero de clase que necesitaba dinero para obsequiarle algo a su novia, así que aproveche la ganga y me lo lleve, hoy precisamente lo escuchare para recordar viejos tiempos, mucho más bonitos y sinceros en plena pandemia.
