Rocktrospectiva: The Masterpiece "Seasons In The Abyss" Turns 35

Released on 9 October 1990 "Seasons In The Abyss" was the fifth studio album by the US thrash metal band Slayer. It was the band's last album to feature their full original lineup with drummer Dave Lombardo until his return on the band's 2006 album Christ Illusion. The album's musical style has been compared by critics to the band's previous two albums, South of Heaven and Reign in Blood  and it was the band's longest album, spawning two singles "Seasons In The Abyss" & "Spirit In Black".

The album was recorded from March to June 1990 in two separate studios: Hit City West, Hollywood Sound, and Record Plant in Los Angeles, California. Produced by Rick Rubin, who had also produced their previous two albums Reign in Blood and South of Heaven.

Seasons in the Abyss continued the band's sound as displayed in their first four albums. The songs on the album have complex guitar riffs that proceed at both "blinding speed" tempos and mid-tempo hefts. Brackett said that the songs' themes shy away from the "fantasy and into the hells here on Earth" and instead was "music to conquer nations by"., the sound was like an intense sonic distortion with tremendous two-string chord barrage to accentuate melody. The album also contains longer, whole-interval phrases and chromatic extensions compared to previous Slayer records, it was the perfect mix between the two styles of the band, speed and slow material. 

The album combines key elements as grim vocals and frenetic guitars and due this reason, many critics have considered this album to be among the genre's all-time classics". "War Ensemble", "Dead Skin Mask", and "Seasons in the Abyss" were described as setting the album's standard. 

The track "Temptation", featured an overdub of lead vocalist Tom Araya's singing; the vocal arrangement on the track was unintentional. Araya sang the song twice: once the way he felt it sounded best; the second time at the insistence of Kerry King the way he thought it should be sung. By accident both tracks were played back simultaneously; King liked the way it sounded together and so it was left that way for the final version. ·Dead Sking Mask" was inspired by the criminal Ed Gein. 

 ^4]American double murderer and graverobber Ed Gein was the inspiration for writing the song "Dead Skin Mask", also the lyric theme changed from demonic visions of the afterlife to find tangible horror in real life—war, murder, [and] human weakness. There's even full-fledged social criticism

Although the album and the singles were "unwelcome" to music shows and rock–radio outlets, it got substantial airplay on MTV's Headbangers Ball. Seasons in the Abyss features Slayer's first music video, filmed at the Giza Plateau in Giza, Egypt.

The album received generally positive reviews by critics. Addressed it to be their most accessible album, displaying the full range of their abilities all in one place, with sharp, clean production, a solid album and the last of the Slayer albums that contained any strength of will or spirit, the songwriting was thematically more unfocused and disorganized, sometimes giving way to forced aggression. The album peaked at No. 40 on the Billboard 200 and No. 18 on the UK albums chart, "War Ensemble" earned Slayer its heaviest airplay on MTV to date.

Rocktrospectiva: El Oscuro "Reign In Blood" Cumple 35 Años

Lanzado el 7 de Octubre de 1986 "Reign In Blood" fue el 3er., álbum de estudio de la banda metalera Estadounidense Slayer, además de ser su primera colaboración con el super productor Rick Rubin quien gracia a su influencia ayudo a que el sonido de la banda evolucionara de una mejor manera, el disco es famoso también por la polémica que causó en su momento, en especial por el lanzamiento de uno de los singles "Angel Of Death", que hacía referencia al medico asesino Alemán, Josef Mengele, en el tema se describen las atrocidades que esta persona realizó en Auschwitz, por lo que la banda tuvo que salir a decir que no eran Nazis sino que simplemente estaban interesados en la historia del sujeto. 

Pese a todo, el disco fue bien recibido por los fans y la crítica, dándole a Slayer por fin, el reconocimiento masivo no solo de las audiencias metaleras, 35 años después, el disco se mantiene entre los grandes álbumes metaleros, ayudando a definir el sonido thrash metal junto a Anthrax, Megadeth, y Metallica durante los años 80's y desde entonces sigue siendo influyente. Junto a "Angel Of Death" la banda lanzó "Raining Blood" y "Necrophobic".

Tras el buen éxito de "Hell Awaits", el manager de la banda pensó que ya estaban listos para grandes alturas, por lo que negoció con varios sellos, entre ellos el famoso Def Jam Recordings de Rick Rubin y Russell Simmons, pero el manager estaba un poco inseguro de llevarlos a ese sello por ser de hip hop, pero el baterista se dio cuenta del interés que tenía Rubin por lo que inició conversaciones a pesar que los otros miembros no querían dejar Metal Blade Records. 

Después de tantos dimes y diretes, la banda al final terminó yéndose a Def Jam con Rubin quien se encargó de que les tomaran mejores fotos antes de comenzar el trabajo de grabación. El disco fue grabado en Hit City West en Los Angeles con Rick Rubin de productor y Andy Wallace como ingeniero de sonido, fue la primera experiencia de Rubin con una banda metalera y eso influyó mucho en entregar un sonido limpio y directo que contrastaba con sus anteriores discos más sucios y estridentes, lo que ayudo a cambiar la percepción de la banda, ya no era solo de tocar rápido sino preciso y con las notas en el justo momento, aparte que las canciones fueron cortas esta vez para un total de 29 minutos, y se dieron cuenta de esta cuando terminaron y comenzaron las mezclas pero así se quedo y prosiguieron, quedando complacidos ya que la música era abrasiva y rápida que las anteriores entregas ayudando a cerrar la brecha entre el thrash metal y el hardcore punk. 

 

Luego de las grabaciones, la banda se fue de gira por los Estados Unidos y Europa, aunque pierden al baterista Dave Lombardo quien sería reemplazado por Tony Scaglione, aunque Rubin insistiría a Lombardo para que volviera pero no lo haría hasta 1987. Curiosamente el disco no tuvo apoyo radial pero logró entrar al Billboard 200 alcanzando la posición No. 94 y en el Reino Unido fue No. 47 logrando el beneplácito de la crítica metalera y mainstream, describiendo a "Angel Of Death" como una de las canciones más devastadoras y monumentales de la historia, además que el disco estaba dotado de increíbles ritmos, infecciosos guitarreos, letras gráficamente violentas y un gris trabajo de portada que sentó el estándar a seguir por las bandas del género, por lo que describieron el disco como esencial para escucharlo y ahí es donde su legado perdura, ya que salió justo en el momento en donde en el thrash metal no había nada similar, con una gran producción tan profesional, que si hoy se hubiera sido lanzado hubiera significado nada para la gente.
