Rocktrospectiva: The Odd "Music That You Can Dance To" Turns 40

Released in September 1986, "Music That You Can Dance To" was the 14th., studio album by the US pop duo Sparks, the album spawned four singles "Change", "Music That you Can Dance To", "Fingertips" & "Rosebuds"

Music That You Can Dance To was the band's most dance music inspired album since their eighth studio album Nº 1 in Heaven (1979). The overall sound of the album was dominated by synthesizers and sequencers like Nº 1 in Heaven but it differed from that release by the inclusion of the heavily distorted bass guitar of Leslie Bohem, and the emphasis on discordant sound effects. Certain track s such as "Music That You Can Dance To", "Fingertips" and "The Scene" represented some of Sparks' most hi-NRG dance music leanings.

While "Shopping Mall of Love", "Let's Get Funky", and (on the original U.S. edition) "Change" presented a side of the band's sound that is discordant and experimental, whereas "Rosebud" and the rerecording of their 1982 single "Modesty Plays" are not dissimilar from the synth-pop sound that the band had pursued on their previous two studio albums. "Armies of the Night" had been recorded for the supernatural horror film Fright Night (1985); the version that appeared on the European editions of Music That You Can Dance To was a re-recording. The song appeared in the movie RAD during the dance sequence.

The recording of the album was the last time that the Mael brothers worked with the backing band line-up of guitarist Bob Haag, bassist Leslie Bohem, and drummer David Kendrick. This line-up had been in place since Sparks' tenth studio album Whomp That Sucker (1981). Sparks' next studio album, Interior Design (1988), was recorded as more of a duo with some guest musicians.

The reviews of the album were mixed and dismissive at the time, some critics considered that the band rather to be avant-garde but now they seem stuck in the techno pop of years past, unfortunately the album was even less succesful on the album charts than their previous studio album- For the MCA releases, the album substituted "Armies of the Night" with the 1985 single "Change".

"Music That You Can Dance To", "Rosebud", and "Fingertips" were each released as singles to promote the album. Each was also released as an extended remix. The UK and US remixes of "Music That You Can Dance To" were different. "Fingertips" was released as a club promo in the US and was backed with "The Scene". The club-orientated singles did not register on the mainstream charts, but did make the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart; "Music That You Can Dance To" made No. 6 (their highest club chart peak) and the double A-side "Fingertips"/"The Scene" made No. 38. Finally "Change" was released in the UK on London Records in 1985 and reached No. 85 on the UK singles chart. The standalone single was promoted by an appearance on the British television talk show Wogan. None of the other singles were popular in the UK.

Music That You Can Dance To Track List:

1. Music That You Can Dance To
2. Rosebud
3. Fingertips
4. Change (substitued with Armies Of The Night on-non MCA editions)
5. The Scene

New Music: Whippings And Apologies (Live)

Sparks have announced their first full concert LP, Live on the Moon, recorded, they say, during a one-off performance at the Taruntius Crater near Mare Fecunditatis - on the moon. The 20-track album arrives 14 August via Transgressive Records, with Cate Blanchett providing intro and outro as lunar emcee. The album's first taster, "Whippings and Apologies (Live on the Moon)" – taken from their 1972 record A Woofer In Tweeter’s Clothing – is out now. According to the band – Ron and Russell Mael – the lunar concert followed an invitation after their 2025 world tour. They don't specify who invited them. We can guess NASA, or aliens. “Honoured to be the first band to perform on the moon, let alone at the beautiful Taruntius Crater. We couldn’t have imagined the lunar fan interest, with all tickets being grabbed up within an hour, Coordinated Lunar Time (CLT),” the brothers said in a statement. “Thank you, Moon!”

News/Albums: Sparks To Release First Live Album

Sparks have announced their first full concert LP, Live on the Moon, recorded, they say, during a one-off performance at the Taruntius Crater near Mare Fecunditatis - on the moon. The 20-track album arrives 14 August via Transgressive Records, with Cate Blanchett providing intro and outro as lunar emcee.

"Honoured to be the first band to perform on the moon, let alone at the beautiful Taruntius Crater. We couldn’t have imagined the lunar fan interest, with all tickets being grabbed up within an hour, Coordinated Lunar Time (CLT)," the brothers said in a statement. "Thank you, Moon!"

They also noted Blanchett's off-stage contributions during the four-day flight to the moon. "What a riot Cate was on the mission's 4-day flight, helping us pass the time with hours of gravitational-pull jokes and the like!"

Supposedly recorded in front of a sold-out lunar crowd, the setlist spans the duo's five-decade career, from early cuts like "Beat the Clock" and "This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us" to more recent material such as "The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte". The band's current live lineup includes guitarists Eli Pearl and Evan Weiss, bassist Max Whipple, and drummer Darren Weiss.

Albums: Madder EP

Released on 3 October 2025, "Madder" is the title of Sparks' first ever EP, that comes after the released of the duo 28th., studio album, the brilliant "MAD!"., Sparks later comment about their new recording: "MADDER!" is a four-song piece to the album, like if their audiences isn't yet MAD!, there you go, hoping these new songs will take you to an even "Madder!" place.

The duo release "Porcupine" last september as the first single, the song is about a guy's fascination with a woman who possesses, a prickly personality, all to a verse with a highly infectious organ riff that yields to heavy guitars in the choruses, plus the video features a star cameo again, this time, they have hired Self Esteem who has a ball vamping it up as the song’s eponymous antiherowas something strange and interesting as usual.

One of the greatest thing about the duo, is their constant willingness to try something new, and in the case of "MADDER!", it is one of their least revolutionary acts, merely their first ever EP, and acts as a companion piece to "MAD!" which achieved their highest ever UK album chart position.

Next track is "Fantasize" which is prime example, starting with a string of ‘no's, going on to create a choir of Russells and making something grandiose from minimal elements while also retaining a sense of sad solitude.  "Mess Up" is led by a particularly wonky keyboard line which fits one of their most rhythmically complex songs, and the final track, "They", works in some ominous orchestration and banked voices. With its gently anthemic sway, it would make a classic ending to a set and in its tale of audience expectations being let down.

Sparks are ageless, they do seem to have managed to slow the ageing process. At eighty, Ron is still a fount of creativity, producing songs that self-reference the band's individual quirks but bring new angles to them. Russell's voice remains undiminished at an age when more famed peers are relying on audience goodwill to overlook their weaknesses and his onstage energy is phenomenal.

So far so good, their first EP has been greeted with good reviews, hoping the Mael brothers energy never dismiss and keep creating, recording and releasing cool and interesting music.

Madder Track List:

1. Porcupine
2. Fantasize
3. Mess Up
4. They

New Music: Happy Dictator

The Happy Dictator is the lead single and third track from Gorillaz' ninth studio album, The Mountain. The song features US pop rock duo Sparks. Damon Albarn said it was inspired by a visit he took with his daughter, Missy, to TurkmenistanW, where its ruling dictator Serdar Berdimuhamedow, where its ruling dictator tries to keep the population happy by preventing the press from reporting bad news. The collaboration was first hinted at on 18 May 2025 when Sparks posted a photo of themselves with Damon Albarn at Studio 13 on Instagram. The visualiser creative content by Jamie Hewlett & Swear Studio.

New Music: Porcupine

Sparks have shared a new video for "Porcupine." The US pop legends returned earlier this year with new album "MAD!", a delicious dose of tongue-in-cheek melody from the Brothers Mael. Sparks have decided to unveil a rare "first" – their first ever EP. Out on October 3rd, four track EP "MADDER!" is a companion piece to the album, built during a hasty but intense retreat to the studio. New single "Porcupine" is out now, a wise and witty return delivered alongside a cinematic video with a starring role from Self Esteem. The English artist is a suitably charismatic femme fatale, blessing the clip with some of her characteristic cool. "MADDER!," is a four-song companion piece to the album, is for everyone who isn't yet MAD! enough. We hope these new songs will take you to an even MADDER! place.

Albums: MAD!

Released on May 23, 2025 through Trangressive Records, "MAD!! is the 26th., studio album by the US pop/rock duo Sparks, one of their most anticipate works over the last five years, upon its release, the album was met with critical acclaim and continued the group's commercial success in the UK started with Hippopotamus (2017), A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip (2020), and The Girl Is Crying in Her Latte (2023) all peaking at no. 7 on the UK Albums Chart, the highest position since Kimono My House peaked at no. 4 in 1974, despite the return to an independent label, debuting at No. 2.

Back in 2024 during the ceremony of AIM (Independent Music Awards) in which the duo received the honors of Outstanding Contribution to Music, bandmates Ron and Russell Mael took the opportunity to announce that they had signed a recording contract with Transgressive Records for a new studio album.

The album starts with "Do Things My Own Way." a  clarion call for non-conformism, this is basically a song that advises the listener to reach their own conclusions on life in a world full of "influencers". The song itself has an insistent synth and guitar beat that backs Russell’s almost sprechgesang vocals, but there is no real chorus as such, just a repeated riff to punctuate the verses.  "JanSport Backpack" is not, as many early commentators surmised, a blatant example of sponsorship or product placement, but a commentary on the experience of rejection. The protagonist of the story has seen the object of his affections walking away from him so many times that the aspects of her he becomes most intimately familiar with are the backpack that she wears, the track has a jaunty synth track from Ron with multi-tracked vocals from Russell that give it a deliberately under-produced sound.

"Hit Me, Baby."  It’s a drum-heavy beat and doomy synths sets it apart from much of the album and subsequently it’s a much heavier number than what has gone before. Next "Running Up A Tab At The Hotel For The Fab" has a more arty, angular feeling and those unexpected changes in tone that Sparks have so effectively used before, "My Devotion To You" is maybe a love song, or possibly a thank you to Sparks’'dedicated fan-base. The lyrics explicitly state that it may be about devotion to any number of things, so you can basically take it any way that you please.  "Don’t Dog It," a pounding art-dance number about the search for answers in religion, or science, some nice ‘strings in the mix which lift the production.

Another smooth track next with "In Daylight," which expresses how the darkness of bars and night-clubs can do great favours to those who aren’t exceptionally good looking. The cool  "I-405 Rules" is a fast-moving track extolling the virtues of mass transport. "A Long Red Light" expresses similar frustration at waiting for the traffic lights to change. Sparks are terrific at taking relatively mundane experiences and spinning them into fascinating songs. "Drowned in a Sea of Tears" is a surprisingly acoustic number with nice layers of guitar, drums and percussion, but if you listen carefully is sound a little bit like Elton John's 1988 single "I Don't Wanna Go On With  You Like That" in the verse section. Next is "A Little Bit Of Light Banter" continues the more trad arrangement of "Drowned in a Sea of Tears", but is a much more Sparks song. It's the kind of song that Sparks have always done so well and shows Russell's vocals at their pop best.

The album ends with "Lord Have Mercy," which feels like an appeal for sanity in today's troubled world. It's an anthemic number that brings out the best of both Ron and Russell's contributions, backed up by perfect guitars, drums and percussion. In the end, "Mad!" is a very satisfying album, enjoyable for an everyday listen.

Rocktrospectiva: The Clever And Animated "A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip" Turns 5

Released on 15 May 2020 "A Steady, Drip, Drip, Drip" was the 24th., studio album by US band Sparks, recorded between Sparks' film projects, the album used a full rock-group format to draw on the band's full range of musical styles and was universally acclaimed by critics, who praised both its lyrical and melodic content. The album spawned four singles "Please Don't Fuck Up My World", ""Self-Effacing", "I'm Toast" & "One Of The Ages". The album peaked at No. 8 in the iTunes chart.

Unfortunately the release of the physical formats was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic and only followed on July 3, 2020, accompanied by the YouTube premiere of a Cyriak Harris music video for the song "The Existential Threat", the physical release saw A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip enter the UK charts at number 7, making this the group's second consecutive UK Top 10 studio album and their fourth overall. The album also made the Billboard 200 list of the top albums in the US, the first time Sparks has had a hit album in America since In Outer Space in 1983.

Following the 2017 release of Hippopotamus, Sparks toured, continued their work as screenwriters and composers for the upcoming musical Annette starring Adam Driver and participated in a documentary about their career directed by Edgar Wright.

As Sparks' keyboard player Ron Mael told that there were gaps in their schedule allowing A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip to be written and recorded: "We had been working so long on the Annette film, and there was a time when there was kind of a lull while they were sorting out just different business sides of the film. Rather than just sit around and wait, we kind of were anxious to get back and record individual discrete songs the material just seemed to kind of come fairly easily this time around."

Like Hippopotamus, the studio album preceding it, A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip used a full rock-group format. Described as "contemporary, electronically driven art-pop", reflecting on Sparks' traditional stylistic versatility encompassing "pop, rock, New Wave, synth-pop, disco, dance, electro, orchestral, opera" while prominently featuring Russell Mael's layered vocals, accompanied by rocky guitars and drums.

Russell Mael said that this record was a  good introduction to Sparks, it's one of those albums that's all over the map sonically, and lyrically it's really kind of uncompromising too. It's not timid in any way." The album was noted for its multiple occurrences of the word "fuck", which is somewhat unusual in Sparks' catalogue – the Los Angeles Times quoted Ron Mael quipping, "We held off for 23 albums".

Lyrically, the songs' content was described as "funny, clever, arch, wry, dry, witty, smart, strange, and, at times, actually rather moving"."employing wit in the form of puns and metaphors, yet his subject matter and his concerns are always contemporary; never more so than on 'iPhone', a song whose chorus is something we can all empathise with: 'Put your fucking iPhone down and listen to me."

The album's closing track "Please Don't Fuck Up My World", was considered as a "poignant ecological plea" that "managed to use a children's choir to non-cloying effect", is also unusual in Sparks' body of work for having an overt political message. A number of other song lyrics, featuring phrases such as "All interaction's now suspended" and "Threat outside, let me hide, just until the danger passes, then I'll go outside ... the Existential Threat is at your patio door and do not let it in", recorded before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, appeared eerily prescient in retrospect.

The critics were positive  indicating "universal acclaim", characterised it as "classic Sparks moments, full of comedy, clever wordplay, deft explorations of all the myriad issues of the world, with arrangements that sound as current and fresh as a dew-soaked spring daisy."

A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip Track List:

1. All That
2. I'm Toast
3. Lawnmower
4. Sainthood Is Not In Your Future
5- Pacific Standard Time
6. Stranvinsky's Only Hit

8. Self-Effacing
9. One For The Ages
10. Onomato Pia

New Music: My Devotion

Sparks, have returned with a new single "My Devotion," the track is off their forthcoming album, MAD!, available May 23rd via Transgressive Records. "My Devotion," follows previous single "Drowned In A Sea Of Tears." The song takes a wry and timely look at performative adoration in the era of hyper-nationalism and obsessive fandom, whether to a nation, religion, brand (Your country, god or flag… Your Harley, or your Jag) or even a sports team (Maybe you love football, though I’m puzzled why you would…). Their new album MAD! finds Ron and Russell Mael examining cultural phenomena such as branded backpacks, tattoos, and the hegemony of banter. The satire is never on-the-nose, always retaining enough ambiguity for the listener to fill in the blanks.

New Music: Drowned In A Sea Of Tears

Sparks shares their latest new single "Drowned In A Sea Of Tears" taken from their latest recording "MAD!" out this May, the track is actually a minor key mini-tragedy about the perils of emotional continence, of the stiff upper lip, of keeping it all in. The protagonist keeps her emotional landscape guarded behind high walls, and the narrator is unable to be her saviour. Unusually, for a Sparks song, there is no punchline, no twist in the tale. The accompanying video is a visual theater piece about a woman succumbing to her tears of grief, starring Tina Kronis, a concept by Ron Mael and Russell Mael and directed by Ambar Navarro

New Music: Jansport Backpack

Sparks is on fire, the duo is sharing now their brand new single "JanSport Backpack", sure I do remember those backpacks, back in the day, but the song a quirky pop track is about fading love as remembered through a faithful, but worn-down, backpack, now that's pretty original. Sparks brand new album "MAD!"will be out on 23rd. May.

Rocktrospectiva: El Influyente "No. 1 In Heaven" Cumple 45 Años

No. 1 In Heaven Track List:

1. Tryouts For The Human Race
2. Academy Award Performance
3. La Dolce Vita
4. Beat The Clock
5. My Other Voice
6. The Number One Song In Heaven

Primicia: Escalator

El dueto Sparks presenta el clip oficial del single "Escalator" tercer corte que se desprende de su producción "The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte" los hermanos Mael vienen de robarse el show en Glastonbury demostrando que siguen manteniéndose vigentes y una prueba es este tema, una simple canción sobre una escalinata eléctrica y con un video igual de interesante y curioso que "The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte", para la ocasión, Russell y Ron se unieron a Paul Trewartha para filmar este video en Japón.

Primicia: Nothing Is As Good As They Say It

The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte".

Rocktrospectiva: El Dinámico "In Outer Space" Cumple 40 Años

In Outer Space Track List:

1. Cool Places
2. Popularity
3. Prayin' For A Party
4. All You Ever Think ABout Is Sex
5. Please Baby Please
6. Rockin' Girls
7. I Wish I Looked A Little Better

Primicia: The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte
