Rocktrospectiva: The Warm Melodic Ecclectic "True Stories" Turns 40

Released on 15 September 1986, "True Stories" was the 7th., studio album by the US rock band Talking Heads. It came out around the same time the band's lead singer, David Byrne, was releasing the film of the same name. Although all the album's tracks appear in the movie, the record has never been considered a soundtrack in the strict sense of the word, as the songs in the film were performed by the cast rather than the band. The album spawned the singles "Wild Wild Life", "Love For Sale", "Puzzlin' Evidence", "Hey Now" & "Radio Head."

One thing was for sure at the time, the band seemed distant in both the album and the film; signs of an impending breakup were already visible. Nevertheless, they managed to produce something that left fans satisfied. The album was entirely written and directed by Byrne, though its origins could be traced back to the time he created "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts." At that point, the group wondered what would happen, fearing everything was at risk; suddenly, the other members began writing their own music, and the "Tom Tom Club" emerged. That period was healthy for the band, even though it would eventually come to an end. The band had fun working on the album and were enjoying the success of their separate projects.

However, as Frantz would later note, the album was Byrne's brainchild; he had begun to develop a superstar persona following the success of "Stop Making Sense" and his "Time" magazine cover, which had inflated his ego. Despite this, the album turned out to be an intriguing, varied work that stayed true to the band's style; contrary to rumors, the recording process was actually peaceful and fun.

The album opens with one of the group's most direct songs, "Love For Sale"—a track rich in varied sounds that playfully addresses consumerism (a theme also reflected in its music video). Things get a bit weirder—though still understandable—with "Puzzlin' Evidence," where the lyrics express skepticism toward modern culture in general. Next comes the tropical-flavored "Hey Now," showcasing Byrne's penchant for writing songs with a childlike quality.

Another shift occurs with "Papa Legba," a funk-infused track referencing voodoo; while it sounded more cheerful in the film, Byrne’s album version carries a more sinister tone. The album produced a major hit in "Wild Wild Life." Although the song had mainstream appeal, it featured characteristically biting lyrics that—from a childlike perspective—questioned the nature of daily life in the United States and how humans manage to function amidst such profound societal changes. Despite this, the track received heavy rotation on MTV. The mood shifts again with the quirky "Radio Head," offering a festive sound before the album settles into the more static "Dream Operator." Then comes the powerful ballad "City Of Dreams," adding a harmonious touch to the record while reflecting Byrne's ongoing interest in global interconnectedness and the way history shapes culture.

Thanks to the success of "Wild Wild Life," the album sold well in the United States. It also influenced the band's working methods, paving the way for a much more collaborative approach on their next release. Critical reception was mixed, though many found merit in the album's warm, melodic pop sound, which incorporated elements of polyrhythm and a certain aggressive edge.

Rocktrospectiva: The Inventive And Influential "Remain In Light" Turns 45

Released on 8 October 1990 "Remain In Light" was the fourth studio album by the US rock band Talking Heads, it was the band's third and final album to be produced by Brian Eno, the album spawned five singles "The Great Curve", "Once In A Lifetime", "Houses In Motion", "Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)", & "Crosseyed And Painless".

Remain in Light attained widespread acclaim from critics for its sonic experimentation, rhythmic innovations, and merging of disparate genres into a cohesive whole. The album reached number 19 on the US Billboard 200 album chart and number 21 on the UK Albums Chart, and is oftenly considered Talking Heads' magnum opus. In 2017, the Library of Congress deemed the album "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Recording Registry.

Back in January 1980, the members of Talking Heads returned to New York City after touring in support of their 1979 album Fear of Music, and took time off to pursue personal interests. Singer David Byrne worked with Brian Eno, the record's producer, on the album My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. Keyboardist Jerry Harrison produced an album for soul singer Nona Hendryx at Sigma Sound Studios' secondary facility in New York City; Talking Heads would later record at Sigma and employ Hendryx as a backing vocalist on Harrison's advice. Drummer Chris Frantz and bassist Tina Weymouth, a married couple, discussed leaving Talking Heads after Weymouth suggested that Byrne was too controlling. Frantz did not want to leave, and the two took a long vacation in the Caribbean to ponder the state of the band and their marriage. They became involved in Haitian Vodou religious ceremonies, practiced native percussion instruments, and socialised with the reggae rhythm section of Sly and Robbie.

The band members realized that songwriting had thus far been largely Byrne's responsibility, and that they had become tired of the notion of being a singer and a backing band; the ideal they aimed for, according to Byrne, was "sacrificing our egos for mutual cooperation". Byrne also wanted to escape "the psychological paranoia and personal torment" that he had been feeling and writing about in New York. Instead of writing music to Byrne's lyrics, the group performed extended instrumental jams, using the Fear of Music track "I Zimbra" as a foundation.

Eno arrived in the Bahamas three weeks after Byrne. While reluctant to work with the band again after collaborating on their previous two albums, he changed his mind after hearing the instrumental demo tapes. The band and Eno experimented with the communal African way of making music, in which individual parts mesh as polyrhythms. Nigerian musician Fela Kuti's 1973 album Afrodisiac became the band and Eno's template for the album. According to Weymouth, the emergence of hip-hop made the band realize that the musical landscape was changing. Before the studio sessions began, the band's friend David Gans told them that "the things one doesn't intend are the seeds for a more interesting future", encouraging them to experiment, improvise and make use of "mistakes".

Recording sessions started at Compass Point Studios in July 1980. The album's creation required additional musicians, particularly percussionists. Talking Heads used the working title Melody Attack throughout the studio process after watching a Japanese game show of the same name. Eno's production techniques and personal approach were key to the record's conception. The process was geared to promote the expression of instinct and spontaneity, not overtly focusing on the sound of the final product.

Sections and instrumentals were recorded one at a time in a discontinuous process. Loops played a key part at a time when computers could not yet adequately perform such functions. Talking Heads developed Remain in Light by recording jams, isolating the best parts, and learning to play them repetitively. The basic tracks focused wholly on rhythms and were all performed in a minimalist method using only one chord. Each section was recorded as a long loop to enable the creation of compositions through the positioning or merging of loops in different ways.

The tracks made Byrne rethink his vocal style and he tried singing to the instrumental songs, but sounded "stilted". Few vocal sections were recorded in the Bahamas. The lyrics were written when the band returned to the U.S., in New York City and California. Harrison booked Talking Heads into Sigma Sound, which focused primarily on R&B, after convincing the owners that the band's work could bring them a new clientele. In New York City, Byrne struggled with writer's block, Harrison and Eno spent their time tweaking the compositions recorded in the Bahamas, and Frantz and Weymouth often did not show up at the studio. Doubts began to surface about whether the album would be completed, which were assuaged only after the recruitment of guitarist Adrian Belew at the request of Byrne, Harrison, and Eno. Belew was advised to add guitar solos to the Compass Point tracks, making use of numerous effects units and a Roland guitar synthesizer. Belew performed on the tracks that would become "Crosseyed and Painless", "The Great Curve", "Listening Wind" and "The Overload"; in 2022, he recalled that "all of [his] parts were done in one day".

Remain in Light has been variously described as new wave, post-punk, worldbeat, dance-rock, art pop, art rock, avant-pop, Afrobeat, and psychedelic funk. Byrne included a bibliography with the album press kit along with a statement that explained how the album was inspired by African mythologies and rhythms. The release stressed that the major inspiration for the lyrics was John Miller Chernoff's African Rhythm and African Sensibility, which examined the musical enhancement of life in rural African communities. Like the other tracks, album opener "Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)" borrows from "preaching, shouting and ranting". The expression "And the Heat Goes On", used in the title and repeated in the chorus, is based on a New York Post headline Eno read in the summer of 1980, while Byrne rewrote the song title "Don't Worry About the Government" from Talking Heads' debut album, Talking Heads: 77, into the lyric "Look at the hands of a government man".

The "rhythmical rant" in "Crosseyed and Painless"—"Facts are simple and facts are straight. Facts are lazy and facts are late"—was influenced by early hip-hop, specifically Kurtis Blow's "The Breaks", which was given to Byrne by Frantz. "Once in a Lifetime" borrows heavily from preachers' diatribes. Byrne has described the album's final mix as a "spiritual" piece of work, "joyous and ecstatic and yet it's serious"; he has pointed out that, in the end, there was "less Africanism in Remain in Light than we implied ... but the African ideas were far more important to get across than specific

The first side contained the more rhythmic songs, "Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)", "Crosseyed and Painless", and "The Great Curve", which include long instrumental interludes. "The Great Curve" contains extended guitar solos by Belew, the first contributions that he made during his day in the studio.

The second side featured more introspective songs. "Once in a Lifetime" pays homage to early rap techniques and the music of the Velvet Underground. The track was originally called "Weird Guitar Riff Song" because of its composition. It was conceived as a single riff before the band added a second; Eno alternated eight bars of each riff with corresponding bars of its counterpart. "Houses in Motion" incorporates long brass performances by Hassell. "Listening Wind" features Arabic music influences, with Belew adding textural content via the Electric Mistress and " The lyrics, meanwhile, sympathetically portray an anti-American terrorist who engages in bombing campaigns in response to American settler colonialism in his home country.  Closing track "The Overload" features "tribal-cum-industrial" beats created primarily by Harrison and Byrne alongside Belew's "growling guitar atmospherics".

The album attained widespread critical acclaim on release by concluding the album yielded scary, funny music to which you can dance and think, think and dance, dance and think, ad infinitum. The album cemented and confirmed Talking Heads' position as "America's most venturesome rock band" due its innovation and magic after the band turned rock music into a more global entity in terms of its musical and lyrical scope.

2. Crosseyed And Paintless
3. The Great Curve

Books: Burning Down The House "Talking Heads And The New York Scene That Transformed Rock"

On the 50th anniversary of Talking Heads, acclaimed music biographer Jonathan Gould presents the long-overdue, definitive story of this singular band, capturing the gritty energy of 1970s New York City and showing how a group of art students brought fringe culture to rock’s mainstream, forever changing the look and sound of popular music.

Few musical artists have had the lasting impact and relevance of Talking Heads. One of the foundational bands of New York's downtown 1970s music scene, Talking Heads have endured as a musical and cultural force for decades. Their unique brand of transcendent, experimental rock remains a lingering influence on popular music—despite their having disbanded over thirty years ago.

Now New Yorker contributor Jonathan Gould offers an authoritative, deeply researched account of a band whose sound, fame, and legacy forever connected rock music to the cultural avant-garde. From their art school origins to the enigmatic charisma of David Byrne and the internal tensions that ultimately broke them apart, Gould tells the story of a group that emerged when rock music was still young and went on to redefine the prevailing expectations of how a band could sound, look, and act. At a time when guitar solos, lead-singer swagger, and sweaty stadium tours reigned supreme, Talking Heads were precocious, awkward, quirky, and utterly distinctive when they first appeared on the ragged stages of the East Village. Yet they would soon mature into one of the most accomplished and uncompromising recording and performing acts of their era.

More than just a biography of a band, Gould masterfully captures the singular time and place that incubated and nurtured this original music: downtown New York in the 1970s, that much romanticized, little understood milieu where art, music, and commerce collided in the urban dystopia of Lower Manhattan. What emerges is an expansive portrait of a unique cultural moment and an iconoclastic band that shifted the paradigm of popular music by burning down the house of mainstream rock.

Rocktrospectiva: The Commercially Succesful And Accessible "Little Creatures" Turns 40

Released on 10 June 1985 "Little Creatures" was the sixth estudio album by US rock band Talking Heads, the album examined themes of Americana and incorporates elements of country music, with many songs featuring steel guitar, and sold more than two million copies sold in the United States. The cover art was created by outsider artist Howard Finster, and was selected as album cover of the year by Rolling Stone. The album spawned four singles "The Lady Don't Mind", "Road To Nowhere", "And She Was", & "Stap Up Late".

Considered their most accessible and commercial album, noticed about Byrne's vocal inflexions and the change of rhythm on every track, LThe Lady Don't Mind" is addictive but "Road To Nowhere" was even better with an interesting video that left mark on the MTV, this propelled the album to massive audiences, and by the time when third single "And She Was" established finally the band in the mainstream taste for good, the album had other cool tracks such a "Television Man" and "Creatures Love" fairly enough to made this odd record and interesting one, despite many critics and fans don't even considered it as one of their best works to date

The album opened with single "And She Was" smooth and light pop as a reminder of the early days othe Talking Heads, "Give Me Back My Name" a little but pesimist and intense sound effects that gave a decadent focus in the way that Byrne sang, "Creature Of Love" had a smooth sound showed a quality on its guitar sound and keyboard, "The Lady Don't Mind" originally a descartable track, then "Speaking In Tongues" and finally "Perfect World" with a more soft and calm melody. "Stay Up Late" was a filler but prepared the mood for "Walk It Down", again a pop full of several tones, "Little Creatures" followed the same premise as the preccedent track, "Road To Nowhere" is the jewel of the crown and the song that made the record worth, accompanied of video equal rare full of curious aesthetics nowadays a classic, and finally a formidable mix version of "The Lady Don't Mind".

One of the most innovate and brilliant records in the formidable career of Talking Heads, unfortunately things wasn't well inside the band and two records later, they finallly split forever, but left this amazing and daring album with such a highly value available for mainstream.

Rocktrospectiva: The Epic Live Album "Stop Making Sense" Turns 40

Released on September 1984 "Stop Making Sense" was a live album to accompanied the epic concert film of the same name byhe Americ tan indie rock band Talking Heads, it features nine tracks from the film, albeit with treatment and editing. The album spent over two years on the Billboard 200 chart. It was their first album to be distributed by EMI outside North America.

The concert film was recorded during December 13-16, 1983 by director Jonathan Demme, and practically since its release, purists have found Stop Making Sense slickly mixed and, worse yet, incomprehensive, basically because the nine tracks included jumble and truncate the natural progression of frontman David Byrne's meticulously arranged stage show.

The lead singer Byrne is in fine voice here: Never before had he sounded warmer or more approachable, as evidenced by his soaring rendition of "Once in a Lifetime." Though almost half the album focuses on Speaking in Tongues material, the band makes room for one of Byrne's Catherine Wheel tunes the hard-driving, elliptical "What a Day That Was" as well as up-tempo versions of "Pyscho Killer" and "Take Me to the River." If anything, Stop Making Sense's emphasis on keyboards and rhythm is its greatest asset, making the album a fantastic choice for a generation that may have missed the band's seminal '70s work, so Stop Making Sense proves to be an excellent prime album.

The album was a highlight on bands career, ranked as one of the best records of all time and of the 1980s, something like a perfectly measured snapshot of a widely loved and respected band playing at the height of their powers in a time in which no other band could do this and no other music movie soundtrack sounds this good.

Stop Making Sense Track List:

1. Psycho Killer
2. Swamp
3. Slippery People
4. Burning Down The House
5. Girlfriend Is Better
6. Once In A Lifetime

Rocktrospectiva: El Abierto Y Balanceado "Speaking In Tongues" Cumple 40 Años

Speaking In Tongues Track List:

1. Burning Down The House
2. Making Flippy Floppy
3. Girlfriend Is Better
4. Slippery People
5. I Get Wild/Wilf Gravity
6. Swamp
7. Moon Rocks
8. Pull Up The Roots
9. This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)

Naked Track List:

1. Blind
2. Mr. Jones
3. Totally Nude
4. Ruby Dear
5. (Nothing But) Flowers
6. The Democratic Circus
7. The Facts Of Life
8. Mommy Daddy You And I

Rocktrospectiva: El Distante "True Stories" Cumple 35 Años

True Stories Track List:

1. Love For Sale
2. Puzzlin' Evidence
3. Hey Now
4. Papa Legba
5. Wild Wild Life
6. Radio Head

Rocktrospectiva: La Obra Cumbre De Talking Heads "Remain In Light" Cumple 40 Años

Rocktrospectiva: El Archifamoso "Little Creatures" Cumple 35 Años
