Rocktrospectiva: The Brilliant And Influential "Life" Turns 35

Released on 23 April 1990 "Life" was the debut studio album by the British indie rock band Inspiral Carpets. Released during the period dubbed Madchester by the British media. The group released three singles from this album: "Move", "This Is How It Feels" and "She Comes in the Fall", with the latter two in different versions from those found on the album.

A slightly modified version of Life was released in North America. It dropped the track "Besides Me" and added "Commercial Rain" (a re-recorded version of a B-side to the "Joe" single) and three tracks from their then-forthcoming Island Head EP.

As the 80s ended and the 90s began, a new wave of bands and sounds emerged overnight in Manchester. It wasn’t as straightforward as that though. November 1989 saw a landmark edition of Top Of The Pops with both The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays making memorable appearances. This was viewed by many as the beginning of Madchester and while the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays had been making waves first locally then nationally, and finally internationally, the Inspiral Carpets were seen in some quarters as an odd rare band.

Their origins began way back in October 1981. Tony Feeley, Glenn Chesworth, Tony Welsh and Graham Lambert first performed under that name in Feeley’s garage. The band proper got going in 1983 with Stephen Holt taking over from Graham on vocal duties and Dave Swift joining them on bass. By 1986, the band had begun gigging around Oldham and at one show. Soon after Clint Boon began helping them out and recording their demos at his studio in Guide Bridge Mill. With a steady line up, the band began gigging and recording regularly; their eleven track demo tape Dung 4 captures their early sound perfectly and indeed several songs from that demo later emerged on Life. This latest demo attracted much praise and the band began attracting bigger crowds and a strong local following.

In September, the band began recording sessions with Nick Garside at Out Of The Blue Studios in Ancoats for what would become the thirteen tracks that would make up Life. On top of that they signed a record deal with the UK’s biggest independent label Mute which allowed them to keep their own Cow imprint.

Inspiral Carpets performed on BBC2’s alternative music show, Snub TV. Recorded live, the single "This Is How It Feels." and the rest was history.  The album opener was the gentle, keyboard arpeggio, "Real Thing", then Martyn's bass gets "Song For A Family" underway. Recorded initially for a Peel Session, the song was about a working class family going about their business. The opening strains of "This Is How It Feels" are familiar to everyone, such was the success and continued popularity of the tune, even 35 years on, the track was in a league of its own. It propelled the band to stardom, Smash Hits, Top of The Pops appearances and lots of national press.

"Directing Traffic" picks up where This Is How It Feels left off. Another great band performance, driven along by Martyn Walsh's outstanding bass lines, much like Peter Hook and John Entwistle, Walsh often played lead bass; songs were carried on his bass lines. "Besides Me" opens with some great guitar work from Graham and is the fastest song on the album. It’s possibly the best example on the album of that classic 60s garage sound so admired by Clint. "Many Happy Returns" slows the pace down and brings side one of the LP to a close. "Memories of You."  It’s the oldest tune on the album, being based on Clint's pre-Inspirals project with Mani - The Mill - and an old 1986 demo from the Inspirals. "She Comes In The Fall" was a released as a single, backed with the excellent Commercial Rain, and was a bit hit in the summer

"Monkey On My Back" was another two minute garage pop tune, and originally featured in the debut Peel session two years before. "Sun Don't Shine" is an REM influenced tune and one of the oldest on the album, originally being recorded in 1987 and appearing on the seminal Dung 4 demo tape. It’s both the lightest and most poignant song on the album. Tom’s vocals are the highlight and one of his best. "Inside My Head" and finally what it was considered the highlight of the record "Sackville" tells the harrowing tale of prostitutes working in the red-light district of Manchester, Sackville Street. It was also where the band had their office.

Life debuted in the UK charts at number 2. It was an incredible achievement. They were only held off the top spot by a Carpenters compilation. Also in the chart that week was the Lou Reed / John Cale album Songs For Drella. It entered at number 22. With the Inspirals all being big Velvet Underground fans, they must have been in awe of their chart position. Given their modesty though, perhaps not. Their new deal with Mute allowed distribution worldwide with Japanese and American versions of Life featuring additional tunes such as Commercial Rain and Whiskey.

Life was one of the biggest records to come out of Manchester and influential for many bands who would follow in the 1990s and beyond. Throughout their career, the band always produced top notch records, but definitely this was one of their strengths.

New Music: It's Where I'm From

The Moonlandingz the avant-garde group enlist Iggy Pop for their latest release, accompanied by a movement-led journey into male vulnerability on their new single "It's Where I'm From", accompanied by a new music video – directed by Jeanie Crystal. The third instalment of a three-part collaboration with the director, the new visual delves into themes of male vulnerability, sexuality, insecurities and ego, translated through movement. Talking about the project, Crystal says, "I'm always thinking about the very obvious correlation to me between the rock icon, messiah/demagogue and the father and how these figures influence the behaviours of boys and men. This is the finale of a three piece sequence (for The Moonlandingz) about male vulnerability, sexuality, and the absurd complexities of trying to understand the label of man." The group's second album "No Rocket Required" is set for release on 25 April via Transgressive Records.

New Music: Before You I Just Forget

Irish five-piece Fontaines D.C. have released a new song "Before You I Just Forget." It is part of the deluxe edition of their 2024 album, Romance, The deluxe edition also includes “It's Amazing to Be Young,” which the band shared in February  There’s also a stripped back version of the album's "Starburster" and melds into a cover of David Lynch's "In Heaven (Lady In The Radiator Song)," from the soundtrack of Lynch's 1977 film Eraserhead. In a press release, the band's Conor Curley had this to say about the new single, which was produced by James Ford: "Before You I Just Forget" is a song that started with a vision of this really blown out sound, something that heaved and shifted with new details, becoming apparent every time you would listen. Like never being able to step in the same river twice, the song morphs and changes.

The Reissue: Bryan Ferry 13th., Studio Album "Olympia" Will Be Reissued

Bryan Ferry's 13th studio album, Olympia, will be reissued next month on CD and vinyl. Originally released in 2010, Olympia includes contributions from Brian Eno, Phil Manzanera, Andy Mackay, David Gilmour and Nile Rodgers. The single "You Can Dance" was co-written with Dave A. Stewart of Eurythmics.

According to Bryan:  When we did "You Can Dance", it started off as a country and western kind of track and I turned it into something with a different feel altogether.

The album features model Kate Moss on the front cover and at the time of release was available in various editions including a CD+DVD deluxe with two bonus tracks and some video content. A large format super deluxe added a bonus CD of remixes. A Vinyl Factory pressed 200g deluxe vinyl was also available.

For 2025, the new CD edition effectively replicates the old deluxe but loses the DVD. So the two bonus audio tracks are the same: "Whatever Gets You Thru The Night" and "One Night". A new LP version is pressed on 180g red vinyl. Bryan Ferry has overseen updated artwork for both formats (this appears to be minor).

Simultaneously, with Olympia is a reissue of Ferry's 1999 album As Time Goes By, a collection of cover versions of popular songs and jazz standards. Like Olympia this record was co-produced with Rhett Davies. No bonus tracks on CD this time, just the 15 songs that were originally on the album. The LP reissue is pressed on 180g ‘honey gold’ vinyl.

Olympia and When Time Goes By are reissued on 30 May 2025 via BMG.

Rocktrospectiva: The Brilliant "Voices Carry" Turns 40

Released on 20 April 1985 "Voices Carry" was the first studio album by the US new wave band 'Til Tuesday, the album spawned three singles "Voices Carry" which went to #8 on the Billboard singles chart and remains the band's best-known song. The "Voices Carry" video won the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist and was played heavily on MTV. The album's second and third singles were "Looking Over My Shoulder" peaked at No. 61 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the magnificent "Love in a Vacuum".

The album entered the Billboard 200 at 152nd place on June 25. The album spent 31 weeks on the chart, peaking at 19. 'Til Tuesday's debut album, Voices Carry, was a fairly good album with a decent production, Mike Thorne does a decent job on much of the album and excellent work on the title track. Former manager Randall Barbera spoke with this writer prior to the album's recording, when Human League/Pete Shelley producer Martin Rushent was being considered for the task.

The band released the hit demo of "Love in a Vacuum," which saturated Boston airwaves prior to the record deal? As good a job as Mike Thorne did on the song "Voices Carry," the world at large has not heard the inspired and innovative recording that was the original "Love in a Vacuum."

'Til Tuesday demos. "Don't Watch Me Bleed" has the same kind of mesmerizing bass that makes "Voices Carry" so captivating, while the final track, "Sleep," could be the Human League going deep into the underground. There was something about this combination of Pesce, Hausman, and the brilliant Robert Holmes that would make a 'Til Tuesday reunion a welcome thing.

The haunting lyrics and dark tones of the keys and bass on songs like "I Could Get Used to This" or "No More Crying" separate this recording from the work of similar '80s bands. "Looking Over My Shoulder" has a bubbling intensity which Holmes' guitar adds drama to. Voices Carry may have achieved success because of the MTV video, but there were nine other songs to go along with the hit, and this album and its follow-ups should have had as much commercial success.

Voices Carry" is quite a glossy album for such an initially unknown band's debut. The songwriting and lyrical wit on the album is top notch, with every member of 'Til Tuesday getting equal credit for each composition. A large part of the sound is shared between Aimee Mann's thick and funk heavy bass and Robert Holmes shimmering guitar work. Despite the title track stealing most of the credit, the rest of the album is practically no filler; tracks such as "Love In A Vacuum" or "No More Crying" show an undeniable knack for subtle production textures and anthemic, sing-along choruses.

Unfortunately, 'Til Tuesday are an incredibly unfairly forgotten one hit wonder; every song on here sounds like a potential hit and shows an extreme ear for lyrical depth and hooky choruses. While the top 10 hit "Voices Carry" steals most of the show, the rest of the album is highly, highly recommended.

Critics were mixed, some describe it as a pleasure but not a revelation, others praised their vocalist Aimee Mann her attitude also because she had her own look and a voice that's evocative, thought not yet distinctive enough to stake out its own turf in the crowded field of female vocalists. Nevertheless, and despite considered' em a one-hit wonder, in the years to come, a popular Canadian teen dram "Degrassi: The Next Generation" was famous for naming each episode after an '80s hit song or album, in this case, they named a two-part episode after this album.

Voices Carry Track List:

1. Love In A Vacuum
2. Looking Over My Shoulder
3. I Could Get Used To This
4. No More Crying
5. Voices Carry
6. Winning The War
7. You Know The Rest
8. Maybe Monday
9. Are you Serious?
10. Don't Watch Me Bleed
11. Sleep

Rocktrospectiva: The Cult-Classic "Repeater" Turns 35

Released on 19 April 1990, "Repeater" was the full-length debut studio album by the American post-hardcore band Fugazi. It was recorded at Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, Virginia, and produced and engineered by Don Zientara and Ted Niceley.

Repeater is often regarded as a definitive album for the band and a landmark of rock music and also been noted for its complex interplay of guitar and rhythm section. By 1989, Fugazi had made the transition into jamming on and writing new material as a band as opposed to playing songs composed solely by singer/guitarist Ian MacKaye. After the completion of several lengthy U.S. and European tours, they began to work on new material as well as refining songs that they had already been performing live, such as "Merchandise" and "Turnover" - the latter of which was originally titled "NSA" in its original form - featuring MacKaye on vocals.

The band once again chose to work with both Don Zientara and Ted Niceley as they had previously, and entered Inner Ear Studios in July 1989 to begin the recording process. The group was only able to record with Niceley present between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. because Niceley was splitting his time between the studio and culinary school. Recording for the album was completed in September 1989.

Repeater is where the already lock-tight Fugazi raised the bar it already set with an angrier, faster, tighter denser modus operandi than anything demonstrated on either of the band's previous two EPs. The album's third track "Brendan #1" is instrumental and the sixth track "Sieve-Fisted Find" is said to contain "furious miniature guitar riffs that interlock." The album's subject matter addresses a wide variety of themes such as greed, violence, sexuality, privacy, drug abuse and death, mainly it's actually about how things in life repeat over and over. The title track is about kids repeatedly shooting each other and references the crack cocaine-related violence in Washington, D.C. in the 1980s

The album did not initially reach the Billboard 200 charts or become a commercial success. However, the band spent most of 1990 and 1991 touring heavily, performing a total of 250 concerts between March 1990 and June 1991, routinely selling out 1,000+ capacity venues all over the world. The band mixed the raw independence of Black Flag and the political insistence of Gang of Four according certain medias.

But while major labels began to court Fugazi, the band decided that Dischord was distributing their records well enough and refused the offers. The album influence mainly on alternative rock culture featured on the sound that predated significant releases such as Nirvana's Nevermind and Pearl Jam's Ten, which would unexpectedly go on to break the genre into the mainstream.

Repeater Track List:

1. Turnover
2. Repeater
3. Brendan # 1
4. Merchandise
5. Blueprint
6. Sieve-Fisted Find
7. Greed
8.  Two Beats Off

New Music: Don't Speak

The newly emerging project Loaded Honey make their official debut with the single "Don't Speak". The dance-pop duo utilises the skills of J Lloyd and Lydia Kitto from Jungle, two musicians who met in the studio, only to forge a deep and abiding friendship. Later living together, the two have swapped ideas for some time now, their skills fused during sessions across Jungle's last two albums, ‘Volcano’ and ‘Loving In Stereo’. The single has a certain ealy 1970's sound with modern pop euphoria, the retro video is shot in what resembles a lonely American diner, the second in a series of 11 one-shot visual character pieces that have been created to accompany the music, directed by J Lloyd and Charlie di Placido.

New Music: Dancing On Volcanoes

Having released three albums in Welsh and Cornish, "Utopia" is Gwenno Saunders' first album recorded predominantly in English, and presents a very different side to her life and songwriting. With "Dancing On Volcanoes, Gwenno says: I feel as if I've written a debut record, because it's a different language and it's a different part of my life. It's about that point where I go out into the world on my own, which people generally write about first, and then get on with their lives. But it's taken me so long to digest it — I needed 20 years just to make sense of things, and I realised the starting point of my creative life isn't Wales, it's actually North America."Dancing On Volcanoes" is heartbreakingly gorgeous, like a luxurious perfume gently hitting your senses and lingering a long time. 'Heartbreaking' because there's something so precious, fragile, and fleeting in that song, which really brings the feeling of dancing on something as hot and explosive as a volcano across.Video is under direction by Clare Marie Bailey and edited by Gwenno.

Rocktrospectiva: The Magnificent Instrumental Album "Sky 2" Turns 45

Released on 18 April 1980 "Sky 2" was the second album by English/Australian instrumental progressive rock band Sky. Despite being a double album it reached number one in the British Album charts, and at the time was the fastest double album to receive platinum status in the UK.

The album spawned the instrumental single "Toccata" which peaked at No. 5 in the British Singles Chart. The album was released in the United States and Canada as Sky, and become the group's first and highest-charting entry on the Billboard 200.

This double album was an ambitious but for certain critics an uneven effort. Kevin Peek displays a nice feel on the electric guitar and adds some needed spice to tunes such as "Hotta" and "Scherzo." And even the legendary John Williams proves once again that he has no intention of opening up his style, opting instead to play traditionally on the electric guitar. The band manages to loosen up a bit on the amusing "Tuba Smarties," yet it is Francis Monkman's virtuosic performance on "Gavotte and Variations" and Williams' rendition of "Dance of the Little Fairies" that make this the Sky album to get to mainstream audiences, Francis Monkman played guitar on the 20-minute rock suite "FIFO" (First In First Out) because, in his words, "I felt it necessary to inject a grunge element". and is a piece about computer processing.

The track "Tuba Smarties" is a light-hearted piece composed and played on tuba by bassist Herbie Flowers, and commonly played during the band's live show as a humorous encore. It was named after Smarties chocolate confectionery, that are sold in cardboard tubes. The track "Vivaldi" is Sky's own version of an earlier track by fellow progressive rock band Curved Air, of which Monkman was formerly a member.  It originally appeared on their 1970 album "Air Conditioning".

Due all this elements, this second album proved to be more effective for Sky, especially in terms of success, check out their biggest hit "Toccata" that achieved a huge commecial success for the band early in the 1980s., a masterpiece standar in progressive rock, technically brillant and very entertaining. No ego's in this band and that is most clearly shown on this track, definitely a cool album.

2. Dance Of The Little Fairies
