Rocktrospectiva: The Fairly "Peace Of Mind" Turns 35

Released on 20 August 1990 "Peace Of Mind" was the second and final studio album by English pop band Breathe. The album spawned three singles "Say A Prayer", "Does She Love That Man", and "Say Hello", prompting the album at No. 116 on the Billboard 200.

 

Unfortunately Critics of Breathe saw the British trio as a poor man's Wham!, and when one listens to Breathe's second album, Peace of Mind, it's hard to argue with that assessment. Wham! was obviously Breathe's primary influence, but none of the songs on this album have Wham!'s freshness -- and few of them are very memorable. 

 

If Breathe is a poor man's Wham!, lead singer David Glasper often comes across as a low-rent version of one-time Wham! singer George Michael. Nonetheless, this R&B-tinged pop offering has its moments. The perky and groovy "Say a Prayer" is fairly catchy, and the dramatic ballad "Woman" is rather enjoyable. But for the most part, this is an album of bland, forgettable songs from a group that emulated Wham! without being a fraction as interesting. 

 

Two years after the band burst onto the music scene with the hits "Hands to Heaven" and "How Can I Fall?" from their debut album All That Jazz, this album brought the group back to the charts with two more hit singles. Despite their renewed success from the two hit singles, reviews were generally mixed, with some praising lead singer David Glasper's "strong, soulful voice", while others dismissed the album itself as "a bit too seamless and proper to sink in deeply"

 

The singles "Say A Prayer" and "Does She Love That Man" peaked No. 3 and 17 on the Adult Contemporary chart singles, while "Say Hello" was released as a single in the United Kingdom, where it peaked at No. 87 on the Top 100 singles chart.

 

After this, the group disbanded and never heard about 'em anymore.
