In Memoriam: British Photographer "Martin Parr" Dies Aged 73

The iconical & legendary British documentary photographer Martin Parr has died at the age of 73, his foundation announced, after battling Myeloma, a type of blood cancer. 

One of the best-known documentary photographers of his time, whose lens was often focused on the peculiarities of the English class system, Parr died at his home in the western English city of Bristol on Sunday.

Martin Parr was born on May 23, 1952 in Epsom, Great Britain. By the age of 14, Parr knew that he wanted to become a documentary photographer. His grandfather George Parr, an amateur photographer and fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, influenced his choice. Later, from 1970 to 1973, Parr went on to study photography at Manchester Polytechnic.

At the beginning of his career, Parr worked exclusively with black and white photography, creating a series titled The Non-Conformists about rural life and endangered non-Conformists chapels (in 2013, Aperture released his book by the same title: The Non-Conformists. Photographs by Martin Parr). Since 1982, Martin Parr has switched entirely to color photography and never returned to monochrome images. Working in the genre of documentary photography, Martin Parr does not disdain from Fashion shoots for the world's leading brands, but still manages to retain his distinctive photographic handwriting.

Parr rose to prominence with his 1980s collection, The Last Resort, which depicted working-class visitors to the seaside town of New Brighton, with highly saturated shots of frazzled beachgoers lit by lurid flash.

In The Cost of Living, Parr captured gentrification under the government of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s, documenting the middle classes keeping up appearances at suburban garden parties and fundraising events with an always satirical eye.

In an interview with ArtDependence Martin Parr said:  "I shoot all classes and I am fascinated by everyone in their own environment. I am very democratic. When creating a portrait of people, I like to show their environment. It’s a good strategy."

In Memoriam: The Legendary "Sebastião Salgado" Dies At 81

Sebastião Salgado, regarded as one of the world's greatest documentary photographers, has died at the age of 81. The Brazil-born photographer was known for his dramatic and unflinching black-and-white images of hardship, conflict and natural beauty, captured in 130 countries over 55 years.

His hard-hitting photos chronicled major global events such as the Rwanda genocide in 1994, burning oilfields at the end of the Gulf War in 1991, and the famine in the Sahel region of Africa in 1984. His lens revealed the world and its contradictions; his life, the power of transformative action. 

Some of his most striking pictures were taken in his home country, including epic photos of thousands of desperate figures working in open-cast gold mines and striking images of the indigenous people of the Amazon. Salgado's final major project, Amazônia, spotlighted the rainforest's beauty and fragility.

A lifelong advocate for the Amazon's indigenous people, Salgado documented the daily lives of a dozen of the tribes scattered throughout the rainforest - from hunting and fishing expeditions, to dances and rituals. He spent seven years on an ambitious photographic journey, exploring the remote reaches of the Amazon rainforest and documenting its inhabitants. The project culminated in an exhibition showcasing over 200 black-and-white images, offering a poignant glimpse into the region's landscapes and communities.

Born in 1944, Salgado left a career in economics to start as a photographer in 1973. He worked on international assignments for a variety of photography agencies before forming his own, Amazonas Images, with Lélia in 1994. He received the Sony World Photography Awards' Outstanding Contribution to Photography in 2024.

Other accolades included the Prince of Asturias Award and recognition as a Unicef Goodwill Ambassador. Through the Instituto Terra, Salgado and Lélia also restored his father's farm in Brazil to thriving rainforest by planting more than three million trees.

Helmut Newton hommage to his hometown. Berlin had an indelible influence on Helmut Newton and his photographic work. Many of his iconic images show the fascination he held for the city throughout his remarkable career from the 1930s to the 21st century. 

 

From nightcrawlers in uber-cool clubs, nude portraits in the old Berlin guesthouses of his youth, and the Berlin film scene. Born in Berlin in 1920, Helmut Newton trained as a teenager with legendary photographer Yva, following her lead into the enticing pastures of fashion, portraiture and nudes. Forced to flee the Nazis aged only 18, Newton never left Berlin behind. After his career exploded in Paris in the 1960s, he returned regularly to shoot for magazines like Constanze, Adam, Vogue, Condé Nast's Traveler, ZEITmagazin, Männer Vogue, Max and the Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin as well as his own magazine Helmut Newton’s Illustrated.

Back in 1979, the newly relaunched German Vogue commissioned him to retrace the footsteps of his youth to capture the fashion moment. The resulting portfolio, Berlin, Berlin!, inspired the title of the exhibition which celebrates 20 years of the Helmut Newton Foundation. 

This collection includes Newton’s most iconic Berlin images, as well as many unknown shots from the 1930s to the 2000s: nightcrawlers in uber-cool clubs and restaurants, nude portraits in the boarding houses he knew from his youth, and the Berlin film scene, featuring Hanna Schygulla and Wim Wenders at the Berlin Wall, John Malkovich and David Bowie.

A front-row view of Andy Warhol’s relentless rise from cult New York Pop artist to 20th-century icon, charted by legendary photojournalist Steve Schapiro in over 120 photos. 

 

From working at the Factory to hanging out with his entourage, including the Velvet Underground in Los Angeles, witness Warhol at the peak of creativity and cultural influence.In 1965, Steve Schapiro started documenting Andy Warhol for LIFE magazine: Warhol was cementing a reputation as an important Pop artist who drew his inspiration from popular culture and commercial objects. With his sunglasses, blond wig, and bland public utterances, Warhol was enigmatic, charismatic, intensely ambitious, and aware that to become a star, you needed the presence of people to document your ascent. Schapiro, also ambitious and hardworking, who in his own words “kept quiet and smiled a lot,” was an ideal witness to Warhol’s relentless rise from cult New York artist to 20th-century icon.  

Ironically, LIFE never published the story, so many of these images are seen here for the first time, scanned from negatives found deep in Schapiro’s archive.

Between 1965 and 1966, Schapiro busily photographed Warhol and his entourage of superstars, including the legendary Edie Sedgwick and Nico, hanging out art openings,. making his underground movie Camp, working on his silkscreens at the Factory, and roaming the streets of New York. Schapiro was also present at the opening of Warhol’s first museum retrospective at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, attended by a hyped-up crowd of thousands —the night where art’s coolest new king was crowned and Andymania was born. The final stop on the Warhol express train is Los Angeles, where Andy exhibited his ironic Silver Clouds at the Ferus Gallery, stayed at the picturesque Castle, and set up and filmed a performance by cult band the Velvet Underground.

Featuring more than 120 photographs, Schapiro’s images are juxtaposed with tipped-in plates of original Warhol artworks exhibited during the period. The art works include: Before and After, 4, 1962, Colored Campbell’s Soup Can, 1965, S&H Green Stamps, 1965, One Dollar Bills (Fronts), 1962, 100 Cans, 1962, Flowers, 1965, Shot Red Marilyn, 1964, Elvis I and II [Elvis Diptych] [Ferus Type], 1963–64, Green Disaster # 2 (Green Disaster Ten Times), 1963, White Disaster (White Car Crash 19 Times), 1963, and many others.  

 

Also featuring an interview with Steve Schapiro, who passed away in early 2022, and an essay and extended captions by official Warhol biographer Blake Gopnik. Andy Warhol and Friends 1965–1966 is a definitive portrait of a groundbreaking artist at a transformative period in postwar American culture.

El Libro: Duran Duran "Careless Memories"

Se viene el libro oficial de fotografías de la banda Duran Duran a cargo de Denis O'Regan tomadas durante el mejor momento de la banda en 1984, el libro se llama "Careless Memories" como uno de los temas del mítico grupo Inglés. 

Según cuenta el propio Simon Le Bon sobre Denis: "Tenía un lado distinto de ver las cosas, miraba lo que pasaba alrededor con un toque especial, una vez vimos las imágenes, entonces pudimos notar el potencial que había en ellas. En la época en que el grupo estaba en los charts con temas hoy legendarios como "Girls On Film", "Hungry Like A Wolf", "Rio" y "The Reflex" los icónos del videoclip, lograron imponer un estilo y abanderar el movimiento "New Romantic", vendiendo un total de 100 millones de copias hasta la fecha y convertirse en uno de los actos Británicos más populares de todos los tiempos y que continuan aún en activo. 

 

La historia cuenta que Denis O'Regan se unio a la banda en 1984 en Paris cuando estaban filmando el clip "New Moon On Monday" y se quedó con ellos hasta el final del tour, por supuesto que tuvo acceso ilimitado a la banda durante los ensayos documentos la histeria de los shows y toda la bulla que había alrededor del grupo llegando a tomar cientos de fotografías ahora restauradas y digitalizadas, las cuales en su mayoría fueron tomadas en la parte Norteamericana y Japonesa del "Sing Blue Silver Tour" de 1984, por lo tanto en "Careless Memories" se ofrece un visión histórica sin paralelo de la banda en su ascenso a la cima, y lo mejor es que las imágenes traen comentarios de la banda.

In Memoriam: Ha Muerto El Legendario Fotográfo "William Klein" A Los 96 Años

William Klein, icónico fotógrafo, cineasta y artista multi-disciplinario ha muerto a los 96 años según un anuncio dado a conocer por el International Center Of Photography, en donde se estaba llevando a cabo una retrospectiva de su trabajo. En una declaración de la institución se dio confirmó que Klein falleció el pasado Sábado en Paris, la causa de su muerte no fue revelada. 

 

Klein fue conocido por su trabajo como fotógrafo, que compaginó muy bien con una serie de detalles que incluyeron cándidas fotografías callejeras, tomas kineticas de moda y trabajo abstracto con alto contraste, también mantuvo una relación robusta con el cine y la pintura. Nacido en New York en 1926, en donde vivió hasta los 20 años, cuando fue enviado a Europa con el ejercito en tareas de reconstrucción tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial, allí obtuvo su primera cámara la cual ganó en un juego de cartas, y eventualmente se quedó en Paris, allí estudio pintura y escultura en la Sorbona, y trabajo en el estudio del renombrado pintor modernista Fernand Léger.  

Fue en Europa donde comenzó a ponerse serio con la fotografía, pronto desarrollo técnicas en donde transponía formas abstractas de su pintura y escultura en formatos geométricos en sus imágenes que estaban en movimiento, lo cual se puede ver en ciertas composiciones en los 1950s, como diamantes en movimiento o murales, de hecho, su trabajo se llegó a conocer como el ABC de la pintura abstracta durante su primer periplo en Paris, según contó el propio Klein a la revista Interview en el 2013, esa experimentación le llamo la atención a Alexander Lieberman, un compatriota que era el director de arte para la revista Vogue, lo cual lo ayudó a desarrollar su kineticismo y el realce en la alta moda, logró encontrar inspiración en el caos y crudeza de las calles de New York donde pasó su juventud y pasaría días vagando por la ciudad tomando fotos de extraños y platicando con ellos de sus vidas que logró inmortalizar en su icónico libro de 1956 "Life Is Good & Good For You In New York: Trance Witness Revels. 

Esto le permitió trabajar con editoriales en las calles, ayudando a tomar imágenes de modelos entre las multitudes, taxis y curiosos lugares logrando unos efectos increíbles haciéndolo destacar frente a otros como Irving Peen o Richard Avedon, su decisión de llevar la moda a la calle en sus imágenes fue considerado revolucionario y ese aire fue lo que también le ayudo a destacar sus filmes. 

Los multi talentos de Klein fueron reconocidos en el mundo, y fue galardonado con la medalla del siglo, de parte de la Royal Photographic Society en Londres en 1999 o el Infinity Award for Lifetime Achievement en el 2007, así como varias exhibiciones en museos y galerías. Pese a su coqueteo con el cine y otra ramas, Klein siempre regreso a la fotografía y permaneció fiel a ella en sus últimos años, solía decir "Tengo una relación especial con Dios, ya que le ha permitido continuar con su disciplina favorita, y cuando tomo la fotografía correcta, Dios me da un pequeño guiño de ojo en mi cámara, entonces yo se que estoy en el lugar y pista adecuado.

A partir de los años 90's, Newton comienza una nueva etapa trabajando para la Vogue Alemana, Rusa, Estadoundiense, Italia, Francesa y Rusa, estableciendose en Montecarlo desde 1981, fue su escenario principal para retratar inusuales espacios, que iban desde lo minimalista a lo más excentrico siempre cargado de erotismo y elegancia todo lo que miraba.
