Released on 5 March 1991 "Thicker Than Water" was the debut album by the all femala pop band The Triplets, their album featured 11 tracks and spawned three singles "You Don't have To Go Home Tonight" their most popular single so far, & the minor lesser known "Sunrise."
The Triplets were a pop rock band that crossed over musical boundaries from the U.S through Latin America. Composed of the triplets Diana, Sylvia, and Vicky Villegas (all born April 18, 1965) of an US mother and a Mexican father, the group recorded in both English and Spanish. They first gained recognition after winning the MTV Basement Tapes Contest in 1986 for the song "Boys", and were awarded a contract with Elektra Records and released their first EP "Break the Silence"
For their debut album, the band relied Starsong Productions as the producer and
recorded in Los Angeles, this time, the band showed some potential with a good amount of slick and highly commercial songs, indeed the album was released just in time before the grunge/alternative music took it all over. In spite of that, what sets the Triplets apart from other female pop-rockers of the
early 1990s were the Spanish and Latin touches the trio brought to catchy
selections on tracks such as "Spanish Surrender" and "Dancing In the Shadows." As a proof of their slick and fine production, the band achieved to score a hit single on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1991 with "You Don't Have to Go Home Tonight" peaked at No. 14 as well as on the Adult Contemporary Chart they did with "Sunrise" at No. 16.
This was definitely corporate rock, not fantastic but decent and enjoyable on the whole, "Thicker Than Wate"r
should have done better. But unfortunately, the pop-rock market paid
little attention to the talented siblings in the months to come after the alternative bandwagon began to dominate the charts.
