Albums: All In Now

Dogstar are back in style with their brand new 4th., studio album "All In Now" the band has released three singles so far "All In Now", "Jou" & "The Sphere" capture all that gritty 90s alt-rock vibe. 

 

The Los Angeles trio returned in 2023 with Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees after a two-decade hiatus and thaterecord leaned toward a breezier, lighter tone, now everything seems to be right with a brilliant alternative rock sound, indeed they are an alternative rock band picture in the 90s, passing from post-punk to grunge with an outstanding guitar sound and a strong bass line that makes the listener to grab some attention. Right from the opening chords, the song taps into a familiar sonic lane that feels comfortably rooted inhe m tid-90s alternative rock playbook.

 

The tracklist is strong, and makes the first listen an intense experience and wanting to repeat it, the remarkable tracks to start here the opener, "Math", the singles "All In Now", & "Joy" and "The Whisper", or "Exalted."Right from the opening chords, the song taps into a familiar… for me… sonic lane that feels comfortably rooted inhe m tid-90s alternative rock playbook. There’s a weight to the verse that carries a grungier edge than what I remembered from their most recent album.

 

The opener "Math" is simply brilliant, strong and full of confidence the first 35 seconds feel like the guitars are back in town assuring you these guys can play. Then the second song, "The Sphere", hits and changes the mood to a brighter, faster-paced melodic tone. The grooviness of the piece is infectious.  "All In Now" is a compact guitar parade of buzzing energy while "The Whisper" could easily become a major radio hit thanks both to the micro-story and deliberate 90s sound (no kidding). 

 

There are other tracks such like "Exalted" considered the weakest but no quite sure in the end and after two good listening you made up your mind, another highlight is "Shard Of Rain" with certain The Cure vibes. 

 

Lyrically, "All In Now" leans into themes of self-determination and emotional clarity and the musical texture is intense, the verses carry a darker, heavier tone before the chorus opens up into a brighter lift that gives the song a dynamic push and pull. It’s the kind of structure that feels instantly familiar to anyone who grew up on 90s alternative radio. 

 

It’s impossible not to acknowledge Keanu Reeves here. On bass, he locks in with drummer Robert Mailhouse to create a steady rhythmic backbone that keeps the track moving without ever trying to steal the spotlight. It’s solid, grounded playing that serves the song exactly the way it should and this propelled by Nick Launay production.
